If anything?

I buy books and dvds and bought these over the past week but I'm wondering what else I'm missing out on?

The book buying ban starts next year.

I buy DVD's and cards.

NeedWineNow · 19/11/2023 22:23

Clothes and bags
books
homeware
greeting cards
jewellery

we've got some really good ones near us, including one in our village, so I usually manage to pick up something. I'm on the hunt for a dressing table at the moment so will be heading to the British Heart Foundation furniture store to see if they've got anything.

Like pretty much everyone else, clothes, books, & toys for the DC when they were little.

Just a heads up for anyone who's really struggling with the cost of Christmas this year - two of my local charity shops sell plastic trees & decorations at this time of year. I was on the bones of my arse a few years ago & the DC & I managed to get a 3ft tree, decorations, lights, etc. for under £15. I couldn't really afford many presents, but having the house decorated meant more to them than anything else. And they loved being able to choose their own (garish, mismatched) decorations. I could afford to upgrade these days, but it's become part of our tradition to hang up our charity shop tat on that £8 tree & giggle about the fun we had choosing things when they were so much younger.

I don't but my 18 year old loves them. She buys classic books and 70s style clothes.

Catsmere · 20/11/2023 00:26

Clothes, mostly, when I can find any I want. I've also bought books, DVDs, china (saucers for my cats) and once a painting of two cats - a real painting, not a print, and going for 55 cents!

What does that mean @RestingCatsArseFace ? Place saving at such a high price on Amazon?

GrizabellaGerbil · 20/11/2023 16:57

Beautiful glassware. Lovely China. Christmas decorations. Clothes, especially school uniform. Books. Jigsaw puzzles. Table linen. Beautiful things.

CrapGoat · 20/11/2023 16:58

They're good for tights and stockings. I buy clothes too, and glasses, I got some lovely wine glasses for £2.99 for six recently.

Yuja · 20/11/2023 16:59

I buy a lot of books, and I buy clothes but only from quality brands. I find I need a lot of time in a charity to shop to find anything decent clothes-wise but it is worth a rummage

Yuja · 20/11/2023 17:01

oh and when my DD was little she was obsessed with jigsaws so I used to get tonnes from charity shops. She's now an avid reader so also buy her books (as well as me!)

Purple dresses and red hats when I can find them as I am a red hat lady we are rogues so not part of the official red hat society so not as strict as those who are

Startyabastard · 20/11/2023 17:11

I used to buy loads of good stuff, now it's mostly tat that I see.
I have moved into a less affluent area though and I use Vinted which is far more fruitful.

Elderflower14 · 20/11/2023 17:49

I buy most of my works clothes from charity shops - a Jaeger jacket, Jigsaw wool skirt and Boden dress

Where do people live that they find upmarket brands of clothes? You won't find anything like this in Barnsley. I'm lucky if I find anything from Next or M & S.

You're not wrong. I did a few of the barnsley ones last week and they were truly dire. The ones I do like are the kirkwood Hospice shops. They usually have fab stuff but tend to be more expensive.

A very special man who died a few years ago was a roofer. I used to wear a red hat. I regularly heard a voice from on high shouting "Hello Mrs Red Hat No Knickers!!" 🤣 🤣
I wore a red hat to his funeral!!

LadyMargaretDevereux · 20/11/2023 17:58

Books, always! Books for myself and also books for presents for family if they are really good condition. I also like to shop for anything else on offer - in the last year I've bought a handbag, plants, chocolate, wine glasses and a teapot.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/11/2023 18:36

@Elderflower14 😍

WakingCliche · 21/11/2023 14:48

I bought a brand new bento box today still wrapped and never used for £2, was pleased with that.

Also they had new socks still in wrappers so got a couple of pairs for a pound each.

Mabelface · 21/11/2023 16:52

Most things! My living room and office furniture, my painting stuff, such as easels, knitting bits and the majority of my clothes. Picked up some mint velvet jeans for £4.50 recently that retail at £90. I hate waste, so would much rather mooch around charity shops than buy poorer quality new for the same price.
