If anything?

I buy books and dvds and bought these over the past week but I'm wondering what else I'm missing out on?

The book buying ban starts next year.

I buy most of my works clothes from charity shops - a Jaeger jacket, Jigsaw wool skirt and Boden dress

Where do people live that they find upmarket brands of clothes? You won't find anything like this in Barnsley. I'm lucky if I find anything from Next or M & S.

RudsyFarmer · 19/11/2023 17:28

My local ones are too expensive now for many things. I do like then for seasonal items though. Halloween and Christmas, Easter etc.

Stroopwaffels · 19/11/2023 17:29

And for anyone who loves telling other people about their bargains, there is a fab group on facebook called "charity shop not so shit finds" where people share what they've bought.

filthypride · 19/11/2023 17:29

Today I purchased a leather handbag and a BOSS tshirt for my son.

In the past I've bought jeans, shirts, coats, tshirts, jumpers, scarf, more handbags... I rarely rarely shop new.

ShowOfHands · 19/11/2023 17:31

Absolutely everything I can. If I'm in need of something, I simply keep an eye out for it in charity shops. DH has every Terry Pratchett book and has never bought from anywhere other than a charity or 2nd hand bookshop. It became a real feat getting the last 3 but we persevered everywhere we went.

We have some really lovely curios, including some great vintage furniture.

Sometimes we upcycle the stuff we buy, from clothes to furniture.

sleepismyhobby · 19/11/2023 17:33

Everything really. Toys books kids clothes adult clothes and brick a brac . Had sone amazing finds

olivialennox · 19/11/2023 17:33

My high streets ones are too expensive but there are a couple of larger ones a drive away where you can find a good bargain. All children’s clothing items are £1 or £2 so love a good rummage and often find some brilliant bits and pieces for my kids.

CornflakesOnTheSolesOfHerShoes · 19/11/2023 17:41

I know, it’s very location specific! I live near a very chichi affluent market town and do very well from other people’s cast-offs.

CornflakesOnTheSolesOfHerShoes · 19/11/2023 17:41

Sorry, that was a reply to @RampantIvy

Gnomegnomegnome · 19/11/2023 17:44

Books
Vinyl
Wool jumpers

RampantIvy · 19/11/2023 17:44

No chi-chi affluent market towns near here sadly Sad

SmudgeButt · 19/11/2023 17:47

books, lps, cds, china if there's something really nice that I've always wanted.

And scarves. I love scarves. Silk ones. Prices have been going up so now I'm having to pay £2 or £3 each but I did pay £30 for one. A real beauty on display behind the till. I asked for the woman working there to get it down and unfold etc for me so I made sure I didn't damage it on my ring or whatever. She was talking the whole time about "yes it is £30 but it is authentic and look, brand new, never out of the box really!!!!" A beautiful pattern of flowers on a really quality heavy silk. Brand new in the box. So I bought it. It was a Gucci that sells for about £400. I could sell it for a LOT on fleabay but I like to take it out and look at it. Managed to wear it about twice so far....

I don't buy shoes or knickers (both ick!) or almost any clothes (never my size). I was really disappointed when a shop had a lovely scarf on display tumbling out of an old pair of Judy Garland style satin green shoes. ICK!! Couldn't even touch it.

anon2134 · 19/11/2023 18:05

I buy books, clothes, cups, pots, pans, etc.

I got some beautiful Christmas decorations from the charity shop recently.

JustAnotherMNUserPassing · 19/11/2023 18:09

Best thing I've bought was a bike for £10! Gets me from A to B quickly and I've regained my confidence 😁

Judellie · 19/11/2023 18:24

My daughter buys her clothes from charity shops as they're better quality/nicer material than new things - no scratchy motifs against the skin for a start! She has sometimes found the odd top for me but I usually just buy books there.

FuckKnowsMate · 19/11/2023 18:41

@NoShelfControl Thanks OP! I have a thing about collecting A Christmas Carol books, that’s a really gorgeous copy!

heartofglass23 · 19/11/2023 18:43

Books
CDs
Clothes
Shoes/trainers
Kids toys
Art
Jewellery
Ornaments
Gifts eg sealed packs of toiletries
Xmas stuff
Lego
Vases
Scarves/pashminas etc
Mugs

In the old days furniture but not anymore

gotomomo · 19/11/2023 18:45

All kinds of things, winter coat a couple of weeks back, tags attached, 1/4 of price currently selling for in store (goodness knows why people don't just return things that don't fit)

Bigteamug · 19/11/2023 18:50

Everything I wore today except my coat came from charity shops so trousers, top, jumper shoes and bag.

I'm so used to charity shops that brand new things always seem so expensive.

I do live in an area with lots of wealthy people so can find brilliant bargains.

Mumaway · 19/11/2023 18:51

Books, clothes for the DDs and me (I am picky which shops), toys, some homewares

KirstenBlest · 19/11/2023 19:13

CesareBorgia · 19/11/2023 17:03

Everything! Books, DVDs, music, clothes, kitchen stuff. Got a great radio-controlled clock last year for £2.50 that I discovered sold for around £80 on eBay.

I got one too. It's great.

HorribleHisTories15 · 19/11/2023 19:14

Ooh a lovely find of Catherine Cookson DVDs @RampantIvy ! I love a good Cookson film during Autumn and Winter too! 🍂

I usually spy in order:
Curtains and rugs
Kitchenware
Sports equipment (tennis rackets, badminton rackets, swimming bits etc)
Kid's clothes
Kid's audio books & DVDs & books
Women's clothes and shoes although my size 41 planks are just far too big to find anything

HorribleHisTories15 · 19/11/2023 19:20

Oooh and Soaps!!! I love finding unusual or locally made soaps in charity shops.

I also pick up lots of cards in bulk; Christmas, birthday, special occasion cards.

reesewithoutaspoon · 19/11/2023 19:30

I look out for quality fabric that can be repurposed, I love sewing, but good quality fabric is so expensive. I can seam rip a man's shirt and the pieces are big enough to cut out a lady's shirt.
had some lovely men's shirts for a pound that were Thomas Pink Tailors shirts, so the fabric was gorgeous. also, wool jumpers that I can unravel for crochet projects.
It just keeps the cost of my hobby down.

Btw op, I noticed a Ruth Rendell in your pile that I hadn't read, checked it on Amazon and the hardcover version (which you have) is listed at £259.99 😱
You may have got far more of a bargain than you thought...

Sorry OP - There is also a hardback on Amazon at £3.26 🤣. However - a great haul there.

I buy books from charity shops too (just about every week).
