Things you cannot believe you ate as a child

One of my mother's favourite sandwich fillings- deep fried crumbed lambs brains with iceberg lettuce and salad cream in white bread.

I did eat it a few times until I properly realised what it was- but- [shudder]. Just why?

DH used to love and adore his mother's pureed (pickled!) beetroot in white sauce. Just pureed pink slop surely (I made it for him once).

Lambs brains in a SANDWICH? ! 🤪

Mum used to make lambs liver and onions in gravy. I loved it until I realised the role of the liver in the body

No more , sadly!

yeah I know. Thinking about it makes me shudder. I once read another MNetter talking about almost the same thing so it might have been a thing once? [somewhere....... Mother was born 1948 but apparently it was her mother's specialty].

Econoburgers from Willy Low’s.

I can feel my brain growing prions when I think about it.

Pasta sprinkled with sugar, nothing else. Mmm, carbs. It’s delicious.

I have recently stopped eating things like crisps, chocolate and a former fave- wine gums because it occurred to me (I am 50 FFS) that none of it is actually food.

Still better than Brain sandwiches though.

It is still possible to buy lambs brains, they are high in protein & a good source of fatty acids. Can't say I'm keen though.

We used to have beef dripping on toast. I can feel my arteries furring up, just thinking about it. 😀

On a high fat low carb diet dripping is considered very desirable. Not on bread obviously.

ouch44 · 19/11/2023 06:19

Sweetbreads. They're not sweet and they're not bread! I'm still traumatised so I'll let you google

meatbaseddessert · 19/11/2023 06:29

Findus frozen French Bread Pizza

Bread that shattered on biting into it. A thin smear of tomato purée, a smattering of mild cheese and some dry as the Sahara oregano.

Absolutely vile. I thought they were tres chic.

Tongue Sandwiches
Liver and mustard sandwiches. Mum made loads for the car if we had a long journey 😂
Tripe and mash
Cow Heel and mash

MintJulia · 19/11/2023 06:39

@augustusglupe I saw a recipe for slow cooked tripe in tomatoes & herbs yesterday in a trendy foodies magazine. Very fashionable apparently, so you may get the chance to stroll down memory lane. 😀

Yespleas · 19/11/2023 06:43

Cat food.

From the cats bowl which was placed on the floor by the kitchen back door.
Bloody loved the stuff 🤢

TheChosenTwo · 19/11/2023 06:43

Deed fried lamb brain sandwiches has turned my stomach. As has everything poor @augustusglupe ate during childhood!!
mine wasn’t anywhere near as bad as those but it’s just readymeals.
my mum worked 2 jobs when we we’re young, used to come home between them both and ping something in the microwave for us and go back out to work. It was always revolting slop. Sometimes if she had more time it would be something freezer to oven which at least meant it wouldn’t be sloppy food with any luck and there would be chips!

FoFanta · 19/11/2023 06:44

I still like a tongue sandwich! I used to love thousand island dressing and mayonnaise, toasted under the grill. It was my speciality when I was about 11 and I used to make it for all visitors to the house.

DustyLee123 · 19/11/2023 06:46

I used to love steak and kidney pie/pudding when young, so I bought one a while back. All I could smell was urine🤢

DustyLee123 · 19/11/2023 06:47

When I was year 7/8 I used to toast one side of the bread and butter the un toasted side, I thought I was ever so sophisticated!

Funderthighs · 19/11/2023 06:49

I still love tongue sandwiches. I remember my mother buying jars of Heinz Sandwich Speead which were like mayonnaise with chopped bits in them. It looked like a vomit sandwich 🤮

x88mph · 19/11/2023 06:54

My Grandad would give me a whole raw sausage to eat as a snack. I can still remember the smooth yet occasionally lumpy texture.

God my mum was obsessed with that vomit spread too, I can smell it now you've mentioned it 🤢
Stuffed lambs hearts that had been boiled (I think) to within an inch of their lives 🤮

Dear Lord WHY would he do that?

Sugar sandwiches

I also had sugar sandwiches.
Quite often! My parents considered it a perfectly normal lunch option.
