Things you cannot believe you ate as a child

One of my mother's favourite sandwich fillings- deep fried crumbed lambs brains with iceberg lettuce and salad cream in white bread.

I did eat it a few times until I properly realised what it was- but- [shudder]. Just why?

DH used to love and adore his mother's pureed (pickled!) beetroot in white sauce. Just pureed pink slop surely (I made it for him once).

I still like a sugar sandwichBlush

Bonjovispjs · 19/11/2023 08:33

I'm another one who regularly had sugar sandwiches. I always assumed it was because we were so poor and it was a cheap way of feeding 5 kids, but going by this thread, it was actually totally normal back in the day 🤣

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 19/11/2023 08:34

Talking about sugar and pasta, my dm used to make a dish from her home country that was pasta with sautéed cabbage and we used to put sugar on it. It was really sweet as was the cabbage.
Anyway, findus crispy pancakes, cooked and then you’d bite into it and burn your tongue.
Primula cheese spread with prawn.

I think we have become too squeamish

I disagree. This thread proves we aren't squeamish enough. Most of you should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves. In generations to come, veganism will be on the rise - and lambs' brains a food will be a thing of the past.

Smash
Tinned meatballs
Tinned ravioli

YourWinter · 19/11/2023 08:40

Sugar sandwiches. Sugar lumps as snacks.
Jam and Nestlé thick tinned cream sandwiches.
A pool of salad cream on a small plate as a “face” with tomato ketchup “hair” and facial features, mopped up with sliced white bread with Stork.
Ski fruit yogurt thickly covered in sugar because my mother deemed it “too sharp” for a child.
Sliced apples and oranges covered with sugar.

I was actually an underweight child, though with awful teeth.

Forgot school spam @Naimee87 yuk!

Parents also tried me on mussels, did not like that at all

Econoburgers from Willy Low’s.

I can feel my brain growing prions when I think about it.

The fuck is an econoburger?

Caffeinequeen91 · 19/11/2023 08:42

Not so much the questionable meat products but I ate a lot of processed foods like crispy pancake, chicken Kiev and tuna sandwich spread.

PupInAPram · 19/11/2023 08:43

Brains, liver, faggots. Potatoes with every meal. When the money ran out for bread for breakfast, rice pudding cooked really slowly in the oven. I regarded that one as a treat😁

Sweetbreads. They're not sweet and they're not bread! I'm still traumatised so I'll let you google

🤣🤣

Mine is raw sausage, many decades ago.

Paintmybathroom · 19/11/2023 08:44

Frozen doner kebabs. Complete with rock hard pitta and slimy cabbage.

Pasta and tinned mandarin pieces. Sometimes completed with a mayonnaise sauce 😆

barbarahunter · 19/11/2023 08:44

My mother, by her own admission, was a terrible cook. We used to live on tinned and frozen food and dried mashed potato mix. I was 15 before I realised that:

a) spinach didn't always come in a frozen green brick
b) fresh spinach is actually nice

Themostimportantpart · 19/11/2023 08:45

Sugar on cereal.

I visited my mum’s family abroad and we were all given tripe soup. I was seen as spoilt because I refused to eat it.

gotomomo · 19/11/2023 08:45

Liver sausage, onion and Mayo in a crusty roll... don't think you can buy it now, still love pate

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 19/11/2023 08:45

I used to drink the vinegar from the pickled onion jar.

Findus frozen French Bread Pizza

Bread that shattered on biting into it. A thin smear of tomato purée, a smattering of mild cheese and some dry as the Sahara oregano.

Absolutely vile. I thought they were tres chic.

I was hooked on these.

gotomomo · 19/11/2023 08:47

Am I the only one now fancying find us crispy pancakes followed by angel delight ... loved them, not had them in 20 years

Boomboom22 · 19/11/2023 08:49

I don't really understand the people saying they liked the food but won't eat it because they know what it is, what is the issue with eating organs if you eat muscle? Unless you are a vegetarian you are just creating waste?

gotomomo · 19/11/2023 08:51

By the way frogs legs are delicious cooked in garlic, snails I buy from lidl ...

And oysters, food of the gods, can woof down a dozen!

AuntieMarys · 19/11/2023 08:52

I still love lambs liver and kidneys but I cook them very differently to my mother's overcooked grey way

Don't be ridiculous! People have been eating meat for centuries. In real life I don't know even one vegan, and very few vegetarians, in fact the only one I can think of I believe now eats meat. I will not be ashamed of myself just because you think I should be and I won't be lectured to.

Why tiresome people must try to hijack a lighthearted thread is beyond me.

PlumpAndGrump · 19/11/2023 08:53

Burgers in gravy, out of a tin. With lumpy mash that sometimes still had skins in. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Beanfeast was also a staple.

Mothership4two · 19/11/2023 08:54

Vegetarian for 35 years @Boomboom22
