Things you cannot believe you ate as a child

One of my mother's favourite sandwich fillings- deep fried crumbed lambs brains with iceberg lettuce and salad cream in white bread.

I did eat it a few times until I properly realised what it was- but- [shudder]. Just why?

DH used to love and adore his mother's pureed (pickled!) beetroot in white sauce. Just pureed pink slop surely (I made it for him once).

Although we didn’t have sugar sandwiches, I was made a supper of cubes of white bread in warm milk with sugar on top.

I also used to coat my weetabix with about three dessert spoons of sugar. And ladled golden syrup onto toast.

I still have a sweet tooth (and, remarkably, all my teeth).

I was addicted to Dairylea cheese triangles too.

Are you my secret twin sister? 😁

PupInAPram · 19/11/2023 09:55

Oh yes, forgot hearts and tongue. Don't know why the brains and liver stuck in my mind but not hearts ☹️. Our version of sugar bread was margerine on the bread then sugar, then under the grill till the sugar melted. Wait for it to cool, then wolf it.

MumofSpud · 19/11/2023 09:57

Scotch pies (meat pies)
Kidneys
Liver and onions
If we didn't eat it then it was kept and served again (cold) at next dinner time until gone

What I don't get is that my mum knew we hated this but she loved it and now she never eats it!

Toast with sugar sprinkled on.
Smash I think it was called - mash potato in a packet. Not sure what it was tbh.
Curry in a packet you added water to.

Laughing at the sweetie cigarettes. I remember those.

Push pops. Like a candy lipstick but looked a bit dodgy.

Kidney. I used to like it.

Cod roe; boiled in a plastic bag, sliced, then fried. I still love it!

We had this too and I loved it.

Also mushroom Toast Topper - I dread to think what it was actually made of but it was a staple weekend lunch for me as a teen.

I like all kinds of offal but have never tried sweetbreads.

Ginmonkeyagain · 19/11/2023 10:07

People ate a lot of offal as it was cheap. Food was much more expensive relative to income, especially meat.

I loved and still love lamb's kidneys, but cooked Spanish style with sherry, smoked paprika, mushrooms and peppers. Bet loads of you would wolf down Rinones Espanol in a tapas bar!

SomethingFun · 19/11/2023 10:12

The worst thing I was served up as a child was a plate of baked beans on a playdate. No bread, toast, chips, fish fingers etc, just beans. I ate it to be polite but I didn’t eat baked beans again until I was a student.

ArtyStripySocks · 19/11/2023 10:12

I used to LOVE mashed bananas with evaporated milk. Not disgusting like some of the others, but I couldn't eat it now.

I also used to eat coffee-mate milk powder by the spoonful. It used to drive my parents mad when we went on camping holidays. I couldn't stop myself.
My brother used to eat raw sausages 🤢

No way ! 😳

Abutter and sugar piece ( sandwich) was a staple lunch in Scotland, it is bloody lovely but obviously now we know better we don't serve it to our children. But i might have one today❤

MrsMarzetti · 19/11/2023 10:20

MumofSpud what is wrong with Scotch pies ?

Longwhiskers · 19/11/2023 10:21

Kidneys and sweet potatoes (as one meal). It took me 20 yrs to like sweet potatoes again.

Renamed · 19/11/2023 10:31

Chicken noodle soup out of a packet. Tinned spaghetti on toast.

My mum made a corned beef pie with homemade flaky pastry - it was lovely but must have been 50% saturated fat. Good job we didn’t have any heating I guess so we could burn it all off.

Mothership4two · 19/11/2023 10:33

Mum used to make a lovely corned beef hash with mashed potato @Renamed I dread to think what is actually in it.

dottiedodah · 19/11/2023 09:41

Bone marrow! Used a small end of spoon to feed me .I think Dad was trying to "feed me up" Just oooh no .Imagine my surprise when in a trendy restaurant, it was served up with a steak as a sort of side ,My Son nearly fainted! We both left it!

Your dad was very clever… it’s an incredibly nutritious thing to eat.

Renamed · 19/11/2023 10:36

I think it is only corned beef, potatoes and maybe onions @Mothership4two but remember the thick white fat clinging to the side of the tin, that would be used for cooking?

I’ve been veggie so long I don’t even know if corned beef is still a thing

EBearhug · 19/11/2023 10:44

You can still get corned beef. And Spam.

Mothership4two · 19/11/2023 10:44

I don't remember actually seeing the can/raw meat @Renamed probably on purpose! You can still buy it. Also veggie (over 30 years) so most of these grim foodstuffs are a thing of the distant past too.

EBearhug · 19/11/2023 10:48

You can still get Fray Bentos pies, too.

FatOaf · 19/11/2023 10:49

what is wrong with Scotch pies ?

Proper Scotch pies contain neural (spinal cord) and lymphoid (spleen) tissue, which is why they disappeared during the spongiform encephalopathy crisis in the 1990s. The ones that are sold now are generally all meat with no offal. In fact many don't even contain any mutton. Pies made with beef aren't Scotch pies.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 19/11/2023 10:57

This sounds mild now compared to the others.

Black pudding, stepdad used to like it in a fry up.

Rollmop herrings, grandad loved these with black bread, sauerkraut and potato salad, I didn’t mind the others.

DM was really kind - she recalls being forced to eat gooseberries as a child by her uncle and was sick, so she didn’t force feed us any strange food.

Ihateslugs · 19/11/2023 11:00

Not a good idea to read these suggestions before breakfast! My mum was a really good cook, she made some wonderful dishes for us especially after going to continental cookery classes.

i really enjoyed her heart casserole ( no idea which animal it came from) in a rich onion gravy but I would gag if given it today. I also liked liver and onions and still cook her recipe today - my children won’t eat it but I love it!

One of her puddings which I really loved and still love today is Yorkshire pudding with syrup. We used to put the tin of syrup in the top grill after the oven was switched off to make it easy to pour. I remember us four children fighting to make sure we got the same number of puddings as everyone else!

Mothership4two · 19/11/2023 11:01

@GonnaGetGoingReturns

Black pudding, stepdad used to like it in a fry up.

Still is regularly in our house - DH and eldest DS love it. I have never eaten it.

dixeypeach · 19/11/2023 11:02

Chicken paste sandwich's 🤢

peebles32 · 19/11/2023 11:02

Well I have not been able to eat fish and chips since someone put a pic of a worm on here in the fish!
Used to love them as a kid but gone forever.

IHateLegDay · 19/11/2023 11:03

My favourite breakfast was crunchy but cornflakes with squirty cream instead of milk 😳
