My local supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, LIDL has got no strawberries for about 2-3 weeks now. M&S has got a small bit.!" Googled a bit and didn't see any news on shortage... asking cause I bake a lot using strawberries

Fleetheart · 18/11/2023 15:53

im also not being funny but surely it’s unusual to be able to buy strawberries in november?

IClaudine · 18/11/2023 15:53

Strawberries are yuk this time of year. Taste of nothing.

Some supermarkets still sell strawberries. Lidle does anyway

PurBal · 18/11/2023 15:58

The British strawberry season is now something like March - December… they’re grown in poly tunnels.

Plexie · 18/11/2023 15:59

Well, we consider it normal for bananas, oranges, and salad vegetables to be available year round, so I guess some people now think it's normal for strawberries to be available year round. And blueberries.

One of the many reasons I think the human race is incapable of achieving a truly environmentally sustainable way of living. See a nice shiny thing and want it, without any consideration of the consequences.

EdgarsTale · 18/11/2023 16:00

It’s November! They’re not in season.

Sleeplessinseattle234 · 18/11/2023 16:00

I have noticed this as well. And as someone who has a lot of problems medically with food. I get strawberries through the year. So yes they are for sale in the winter. And yes people eat them through the winter

Pipistrellus · 18/11/2023 16:03

Strawberries are a summer fruit. They taste awful in winter. Maybe try frozen if you are baking them anyway.

zurala · 18/11/2023 16:07

Adding to the chorus of "it's November!". I wouldn't expect to be able to buy strawberries at this time of year.

Bananas do grow year round, and I suppose you'd get oranges for the northern hemisphere or the south, we are importing these anyway. I have salad outside right now in the UK. Though no strawberries or blueberries and the raspberries have just about finished.

OhmygodDont · 18/11/2023 16:09

They will be pretty tasteless right now even when you get them.

But like everyone else it’s November you missed the chance for proper good strawberries for a cheap price in a standard supermarket. A few U.K. growers will still have some in huge polys but they will be costly.

Catandsquirrel · 18/11/2023 16:10

They might available but they're not good in November. They are associated with summer cakes and puddings because that's when they're at their best. Out of interest what made you start baking with strawberries at this time of year?

sixteenfurryfeet · 18/11/2023 16:22

No strawberries in November?

Good. Better for the planet if there aren't.

We do not need to force seasonal fruit to grow in a hothouse somewhere so it can be transported hundreds, if not thousands of miles to get here. Ridiculous carbon footprint.

alice9263 · 18/11/2023 16:26

I made hundreds of these every year from
around this time till Christmas for parties

we shouldn’t be able to buy strawberries in November FGS!

gofullpelt · 18/11/2023 16:28

Tesco also has a broccoli shortage which is very unhelpful.

arethereanyleftatall · 18/11/2023 16:29

Good. Shouldn't be eating fruit out of season.

eldorado02 · 18/11/2023 16:30

My mum gets in a huff about berries outside summer, yet buys bananas, grapes and avocados year-round - make it make sense!!
