Are you really ok with having another Tory government? Because in all honesty that is what you'll get.

I think there are quite a few Mumsnet posters who are naturally Tory voters, so the 'at least they know what a woman is' line is a convenient way to justify how they intended vote in any case. It is nonsense, as the Tories have brought in all the policies the GC posters are up in arms about, but cognitive dissonance is not unusual in voting choices.

Yup

I'm more okay with another Tory government than I am with the erasure of women, women's existence, women's status and women's protections.

The Tories don't give a fuck about women.

I'm not sure that it's a good look voting for Palestinian genocide and erasure of womens/girls rights just to get Labour in though 🤔

It's about getting the Tories out IMO

OK, how about this one then. I’m a vulnerable woman in poor health. Victim of outright rape once (stranger) which I didn’t report partly because criminal justice is on its knees (thanks Tories) and sexual assault by acquaintances twice as well as ongoing domestic abuse. The resulting psychological damage is something I am waiting to deal with because the NHS is on its knees but I have received lifesaving care after self-harm/lifelong health problems in NHS hospitals. The way the tories are going I will not be able to have my life saved in future. Honestly? I’d rather receive medical treatment and live, with a man on the ward, than have to go without because I can’t pay for it and at this point, die. Some TW are sexual offenders. Some doctors are sexual offenders as well.

RE prisons, the Tories are the „law and order” party. Women are so much more likely to end up in prison under longer sentences, thus raising the likelihood that they will be exposed to the risk of assault from male or female prisoners. Even though most of them need rehabilitation and support more than punishment. If you vote for the Tories, it’s “lock them up and throw away the key”. For female offenders as well as male ones.

You have your reasons why you vote one way.

Others may have reasons they vote differently.

Men should never be in women’s prisons.

I’d happily throw away the key for most people in prison if it was possible.

There is no one I could vote for so should a general election be called before I leave this country for good (unlikely) then I will be spoiling my ballot. My prediction for the election will be a historic low turnout as I am certainly not the only one who feels politically homeless. People are utterly deluded if they think Starmer is going to sweep into power and implement meaningful change - we are broke, our infrastructure is on its knees and labour wouldn’t be coming into power with a strong economy backing them up like they did in 97.

I'm sure all those women who gave their lives so you can vote would be proud of you opting out 🙈🙄

Completely agree. I'm sick of people sanctimoniously saying they are 'politically homeless.' So much navel gazing - no one cares. You aren't going to get a party with policies you agree with 100%. But we cannot survive another 5 years of this shit.

Totally with you 💯

The current government is a heartless, corrupt shitshow.

However, I can't currently bring myself to vote Labour. It is not just the rampant misogyny and anti-Semitism. It is what their attitude to women's rights represent. It shows me that they in are the thrall of special interest groups, that they don't have the courage to make difficult decisions, that they are not interested in the views of their voters, that they intolerant of differing views within their party and that they can't look at things objectively. That is not a party I want in power.

I have no one to vote for.

Vote the Tories out then. Do something helpful rather than not vote. It's called pragmatism 🤷🏻‍♀️

As much as I dislike the Tory government, at least they do what it says on the tin and you know where you stand.

I’d be up for voting for change but I can’t see how voting for Labour would be a vote for change and any change there was wouldn’t be positive.

Both the Palestine and trans issues are important to me so I can’t vote for a party whose views on those things are so different to mine, even if it does mean I’m voting for more of the same crap we already have. It would make no sense.

EasternStandard · 19/11/2023 10:51

Op you get to vote on what you feel is a priority as will other women

You don’t have their vote to command too

aswarmofmidges · 19/11/2023 10:52

yes the trans question is important but I can't vote for a party that is so cruel in its treatment of the sick and disabled - I put them ahead of myself

Yes it would be nice if starmer was critical of the Israeli government but I can't vote for a party that promotes and grows division and destroys the planet

There is no "good" party to vote for but there is a clear "less bad"

ProvincialLady1 · 19/11/2023 11:10

What are Labour actually proposing to bring in in terms of the trans/women's/GC issue? Do we know yet? I understood there was some more sensible discussion going on recently with the Labour Party moving to a more moderate position.

EatMyHead · 19/11/2023 11:11

scatterolight · 18/11/2023 19:58

I want to see both parties absolutely destroyed. But that won't happen simultaneously. First the Tories need to be destroyed and Labour get a landslide from voters who simply have no other option. And then in intervening years a new party will hopefully form that is actually socially conservative with reasonable common sense policies and they will destroy Labour in 2029. Depressing to have to wait so long.

Apart from gender ideology, in what ways and on what issues would you want a new party to be more socially conservative than where Starmer is already taking Labour?

The "Israel has a right to defend itself" stance is being echoed around Europe/ US. Labour are aligning themselves in
anticipation of gaining power. It's geopolitical. Disgusting but that's clearly what they feel they must say.
The conservatives are certainly no better.

Too many passive people on this thread. My and my families success or failure will not depend on which government is in charge.

People are always looking for excuses. I’ve never been in a better financial and work position than I am now. That is due to my efforts and in spite of any macro economic conditions.

if people realised that external factors account for little they would in turn find more success.

Wow.

I am GC and am very worried about the possible impact of gender ideology on women's rights and our children and young people and the impact on free speech (which is hugely problematic) but will not be voting Tory for the following reasons:

  • they have fucked the economy more than it needed to be because of Brexit.
  • changing the work capability assessment and making it harder (when the bar was already pretty low) because apparently everyone can work from home now
  • removing the work capability assessment
  • now proposing to remove access to medical care on top of sanctions
  • punishing poor people (see all of above) for health issues that have been caused by lockdown, long covid, NHS waiting lists and the cost of living crisis. And because we now have no cheap labour because of Brexit.
  • Rwanda
  • not doing anything to protect our children and young people from the dangers of social media.
  • Not ensuring we had enough PPE to deal with a pandemic.
  • Not doing anything about the dentist crisis.
  • proposing to reduce workers rights including paid holidays, minimum wage and redundancy rights/payments
  • Probably a few things I've forgotten but you get the gist.

So I am concerned about the impact of the continuing growth of gender ideology and its impact, but that doesn't outweigh all of the above (which is saying something as women's rights, child protection and free speech are pretty fucking important issues!). This growing attack on the poor and disabled and most vulnerable in society is more pressing imo.

Unfortunately, I live in a Tory safe seat so it probably doesn't matter which way I vote. Although for the first time ever I did have a Tory canvasser round the other day so maybe they are worried.....

It you're in a safe Tory seat it's best to vote lib dems or the next most popular in your constituency. Better to vote against the Tories. You have a very important vote indeed @NoMoreFuckingAbout ✊🏽
