Tories are now proposing to stop benefit claimant's access to medicines if they have been deemed not doing enough to look for work....

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/michael-heseltine-hate-politics-jobless-prescriptions-b2449412.html

It's not enough to sanction them, so they basically have next to no money to live on. Now they want to take away their access to medicines, some of those will of course be life-saving.

They've utterly lost the plot

No centre-right person with a heart or a conscience could possibly support this. I think the Archbish has been quite critical of Tory party and might get directly outspoken over something as immoral as this.

Of course, this is the last part of their dreadful covid policy, which is now utterly determined to ignore just how often it is making people ill enough to need time off, to ignore long covid and its impact, to ignore the other conditions exacerbated by covid, pretend it's just a cold. And to drive the 1-2million most critically vulnerable out of both the workforce and society in general. And then wonder why there's a rise in absences from work.

Absences which are also occurring in many other countries - it's really not down to malingering Brits. And if we are going to "live with" covid in ways that mean repeated infection, then we also are choosing the health sequelae. But the Tories are airbrushing that out, and hoping no-one will notice.

Stupidity such as flying this kite at all might just make people stop and think why society is sicker than it was, rather than assuming it isn't and there are malingerers to punish

Danikm151 · 18/11/2023 09:04

They want to bring in work placements again too. So make people work for 12 weeks for their 300 a month benefits.
the businesses benefit from free labour a d others are stopped from getting a job because the business can just do 4 lots of work placements and save £21k a year per role.
It’s a vicious cycle

There may be 1m job vacancies but not necessarily the skills that people have

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 18/11/2023 09:04

If Michael Heseltine is now viewed as liberal, it shows just how far right the party has shifted.
Shame on them.

VikingVolva · 18/11/2023 09:08

I have less of a problem with the concept of workfare (which exists in various countries) but fully acknowledge that it does less than it seems, and may impede the creation of new jobs.

SerendipityJane · 18/11/2023 09:10

Tilllly · 18/11/2023 05:33

They won't do that
People will just go to the ED

Well as long as you're in work that'll be OK. You'll have your "A & E Pass" won't you.

Not for naught people who don't work. Why should we sub them up ?

SerendipityJane · 18/11/2023 09:12

They also have this view - I really do think they want to go back to the Mill Owners and workhouses society.

Just remember when we had those, there were some who thought they were a soft touch.

AngelAurora · 18/11/2023 09:14

Do not disclose or give them consent too see your medical records. They are evil to the core.

RosaGallica · 18/11/2023 09:16

A quick google finds some other sources including a times article behind a paywall.

A new low? It’s not long ago there were grumbles on the internet about similarities to 1930s Germany, which I hoped were exaggerations. This is like the Nazis!

SerendipityJane · 18/11/2023 09:17

The Nazis were much more efficient.

illbeinthegarden · 18/11/2023 09:22

Work placements piss me off... if there is a job there then pay someone to do it with holiday pay/pension options etc not just a constant stream of free labour!

I am happy to pay and support the welfare system, I don't care that a small percentage of people maybe 'taking the piss' to me it's worth it to support the majority of people who need the support and shouldn't be made to feel like a second class citizen either.

Most people claiming UC do work... our government wastes far more money in other areas but like to whip up hatred for the poor people to cause divide and be a scape goat.

Livelovebehappy · 18/11/2023 09:22

Genuine benefit claimants, who can’t work, have nothing to worry about here. This is aimed at the people who are deemed fit to work who are putting in zero effort to find a job. People aren’t reading it properly, and as usual are catastrophising the situation. The government have to do something, whether it is the Tories, or a future Labour government. Soon there will be more people on benefits than working the way things are going…..

Babyghirl · 18/11/2023 09:23

I agree with the benefits end, I know a 40 year old never worked a day in there lives had a two week holiday in the summer and now away again for a week, where away for 3 nights in the UK in Sept, and away for 5 nights at the start of Dec, so yes it pisses me off someone who doesn't work can have a life like this, and there's not a thing wrong with them either, so can work but choose not to cause they have a better life living of the tax payers.

Maaate · 18/11/2023 09:25

What benefits are they claiming that allow them to have all these holidays?

I look forward to buying your latest book "Things that never happened and other Tory whoppers"

This reflects exactly what I mean.

It is assuming that the numbers claiming are malingerers - people who are actually fit to work.

Airbrushing out completely the effects of covid and long covid (both directly and as a rise in other conditions that covid is known to exacerbate). Even though, if they looked at medical data sets, these rises are clear.

The idea that there are more people on benefits because there are more people who are actually less fit, and who need to reduce hours, retire early or stop work completely, really seems to be beyond their grasp

Have they got a free car too?

BTW. Benefit claimants are allowed to go on holiday.

Noting as well that 'retiring early' currently means retiring before 67!

I think it is time for action. Too many people are living the life of Riley at the taxpayer's expense. My cousin's neighbour's sister's friend claims all the benefits, including disability benefits. She got a free Range Rover from the government and works cash in hand as a circus acrobat. It has to stop.

(Thought I would get in first before the usual tall tales about benefit claimants start).

The government's proposals are hideous, but they will never happen as the Tories will voted out before they can implement this cruelty. They are trying to scrape a few votes from the more despicable sections of the electorate.

Why haven't you reported her then?

Redlarge · 18/11/2023 09:29

They are literally inhumane.

Blueeyedmale · 18/11/2023 09:31

No doubt they will end up going to court the NHS is free at the point of use, I suppose their millionaire friends will get tax breaks, roll on when these fucktards are gone!

Did you bother to read the whole of my post? Why would I report a mythical circus acrobat?🤣
