Absolutely love Vernon and what a challenge he's taken on. Heartened to hear he's already over £1.2million. Good lad Vernon. Its an incredible charity.

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/11/2023 08:05

Oh dear Lord! I've had to switch Radio 2 off due to the incessant coverage of this! I tried to listen to Jo Whiley last night - but nope, we had Vernon crying in a field.

I like him, I like his show, I like CIN as a charity, I will donate, but I cannot stand they way the BBC allows an event like this to become their only output for a week (and it was last week as well quite frankly) - I've gone back to R4 and R5 and finding some interesting programmes to listen to. I might switch permanently. Sure they'll miss me.

Gnomegnomegnome · 16/11/2023 08:09

I’ve loved listening to this. I love how much support he’s getting.

I'd rather listen to this than the ' Millionnaires tax dodge' auction Chris Evans did for CIN that I switched off every year, but yes, it's everywhere! I only listen in the morning and I'm in and out so I'm not too bothered.

PearlClutzsche · 16/11/2023 08:15

I like him too (though I think he’s quite MN-unpopular) but yes I did get a bit fed up listening to radio 2 yesterday.
It’s fantastic what he’s doing - both as a fundraiser and a personal achievement - and the reporting on it has genuinely been interesting, but it was just non-stop!
Anyway, I hope he does well and manages to complete his challenge. It is pretty awesome.

So agree re the Chris Evans auction. I couldn't listen either.

I'm not to fussed about Vern. He seems like a good guy, painfully doing a good thing.

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/11/2023 08:36

I didn't listen to the Chris Evans auctions either - because of course they were inappropriate and unfair. But did they really dominate a whole two weeks of broadcasting?

This is more hyped than Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Kitchen Disco, and that really is saying something!

NigelHarmansNewWife · 16/11/2023 08:49

Those auctions were started in Terry's day. It is always like this in the week running up to CIN. My own experience of fundraising is that you have to remind a huge number of people to donate and remind them many times, even those who are happy to donate. Another equally huge number hate being reminded either because they've already donated or they don't want to donate.

Doesn't bother me because I can't stand Zoe Ball as I find her irritating and feel no connection with her, so I listen to R4 instead.

YorkieTheRabbit · 16/11/2023 09:02

Love Vernon, I’m happy hearing how he’s progressing but for the love of god, why have the given his show to Richie this week?!
I’m sure he’s a nice bloke but a radio presenter he certainly isn’t Confused

FinallyFinalGirl · 16/11/2023 09:33

I can't listen. He was chatting to Richie or someone about it before he started and they went on and on and on about how amazing he was, how great he was....it felt like such an ego stroke.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 16/11/2023 16:16

I agree with pps above who hated the CE millionaire auction stuff and much prefer this. This challenge is way harder then recent ones like Scott's treadmill thing or Rylan's Karaoke. This is seriously difficult. In a world that is so depressing and horrible currently it has been lovely to see the support and affection that he's been getting every day. I'm a bit of a hard hearted cow really but I've been finding bits really moving (and some bits really funny).

CervixSampler · 16/11/2023 16:22

The same Children In Need that gave thousands to a disgraced charity to help children be rendered infertile and push dangerous ideologies. No thanks. He was due to be on my school route today and I'm glad we didn't see him.

TheDogsMother · 16/11/2023 16:28

Radio 2 do this every year. They set a challenge for one of their presenters which involves virtually breaking them. It dominates the weeks output and then they are constantly on and on about donations. Bah humbug and all that but it does my head in. It seems I'd rather complain about it than actually change to another radio station for a week though 😂

NigelHarmansNewWife · 16/11/2023 16:30

He's near us right now. Hats off to him, I don't think I could do it.

OllieCollieWoo · 16/11/2023 16:32

I'm addicted to the updates. It's annoying to have to put up with R2 in-between. Crikes at Scott Mills ' when did he get so boring???

I hope they are filming for a TV programme later. He spent yesterday evening running to where we live so that made a grey day more interesting, though we didnt go and see him as was working. If it was Jezza Vine cycling round London I wouldn't give a fuck.

Reading social media loads of negatives about VK and not much positive stuff. So I'm obviously a minority or we have to support him secretly?

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 16/11/2023 16:49

People on here don't seem to like VK (partly because of the sexting ten years ago) but seemed to love Ken Bruce. I liked KB but on here he was like a God which I never understood. Never understood the hatred of Steve Wright either but then I suspect I'd hate 99% of MNetters if I met them!

Scott Mills I wasn't sure of at first but now I love his dry sarcasm.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 16/11/2023 18:04

I'd like Gambo back on POTP - can do without Steve Wright's endless "funny" comments and crap jokes. I liked Popmaster when Ken presented the morning show, but it doesn't translate well to TV where it's slow and dull.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 16/11/2023 18:53

I like Vernon, but this challenge seems, as pp said, like it could break him . I'm feeling a bit uncomfortable about how much urging on, massaging, physio etc he's needing - he's not a 1-marathon runner, let alone 4 in 4 days, and this just feels too much, like he could actually keel over and be seriously unwell/injured as a result.

I agree, Kinder Scout is harsh and in the weather in the Peaks today....
Stupid idea.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 16/11/2023 20:21

Shame it wasn't a sponsored silence.

the80sweregreat · 16/11/2023 20:25

Scott mills is always a bit fed up and I love this about him, he rarely fawns over people ( as Zoe ball does )
I said to dh that they will make a documentary about this challenge and it's bound to feature the Rocky music and a shot of his swollen feet and toenails hanging off.
It's a massive challenge, but the constant messages about it are a bit much sometimes, just let him get on with it!
The one today sounded really hard though
I think it is a bit much , but he must have agreed to do it etc

I was just thinking that listening to it today. It sounds a bit much. The man is 48 years old. His knees sound dodgy and I hope he doesn't do any permanent damage. Tess was on Sara Cox this afternoon. She must be thinking ' bloody hell I hope he doesn't keel over just before Blackpool week on Strictly!'

Coldia · 16/11/2023 22:21

I agree it's better than the write-off nonsense of the auction but, while I am in awe of what Vernon's doing, this is really extreme. He's been sounding increasingly 'altered' on these long rambling interviews with him to the point where I wish they'd pull it, really.

Listening to Richie balls up the buttons is funny as fuck, but Paddy is shit at doing the quiz and v annoying.

Riverlee · 16/11/2023 22:25

Been in the car alot the last couple of days so have been following Vernon’s progress. I commented to dh that they are pushing it a bit too heavily. However, also enjoying the updates and hearing how it’s going on.

Funnily enough, didn’t find Ritchie as bad as expected, although at times he was a little try to hard.

Loved Scott Mills coverage.

cardibach · 16/11/2023 22:31

These challenges are nuts. He can’t give up, so he’s at risk of causing himself permanent damage.
When did we get to the point that people would only donate if someone else was suffering and risking life long damage?
