You may be preventing a fucking divorce here, so please help by answering this question -

Question: If I said "It's milder today than it was yesterday", would you take that to mean:
A: Its warmer than it was yesterday
B: Its colder than yesterday

Very many thanks!

Warmer.
struggling to understand how it could mean colder or both.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 15/11/2023 12:45

Warmer. Because that's what it means 🤷

Canyousewcushions · 15/11/2023 12:46

Either!!

Said in a heatwave I'd hear cooler.
Said in winter I'd hear warmer.

RampantIvy · 15/11/2023 12:46

Whenever mild is used on the weather forecast it usually means that it isn't cold and is often used to describe weather that has become less cold. "We had a mild Christmas" for example.

As far as I know I have never heard the term used to mean colder weather.

MorvernBlack · 15/11/2023 12:47

Warmer.

ICanSeeMyHouseFromHere · 15/11/2023 12:47

What MonsterMama said. Less harsh, more like a normally pleasant day than yesterday was/that other place was.

I don't think I've ever used it in a 'not as roasting hot as yesterday' sense, or a less rainy sense though, even though technically correct.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 15/11/2023 12:47

'Milder' just means less extreme. But in context of weather, I'd take it to mean 'less cold'.

LylaLee · 15/11/2023 12:48

Milder = less horrible.

So the thing that was horrible yesterday is not so bad. Heat, cold.

Milder = closer to a nice day.

Greycottage · 15/11/2023 12:51

WaWaWaWaaaaaa · 15/11/2023 12:38

Warmer if it was very cold yesterday but colder if it was hot yesterday.

Mild is between hot and cold.

This!

In the middle of a summer heatwave, if you said “it’s milder today”, that would mean colder.

In winter, if it was freezing the day before then a bit warmer the next day, you would say milder.

Milder = closer to mild. A middling temperature.

This. Technically it means less extreme but in common use it’s usually used to mean “less cold”. I guess “less hot” could also work but I thinks that would be unusual usage

i think common usage would be a less cold day is milder, while a less hot day would be cooler.

hopeishere · 15/11/2023 12:52

Warmer.

Dah and I have similar about the term "crisp"!!

NoSquirrels · 15/11/2023 12:52

Less cold, i.e. warmer.

”It’s mild today” = it’s not as cold as you’d expect for the time of year.

Sarvanga38 · 15/11/2023 12:52

Warmer

SeulementUneFois · 15/11/2023 12:52

Better

So if it was really hot yesterday it would mean colder.
Generally and currently it means warmer.

tealweasel · 15/11/2023 12:54

MonsteraMama · 15/11/2023 12:38

Ok so technically it just means "less harsh" so it could be both depending on whether it was very hot or very cold. So technically, neither are wrong.

However when referring to weather it's almost always used to mean warmer.

Exactly this. I'd use it to mean less extreme of temperature - in practice, as I live in the UK, this inevitably means it's warmer.

NoSquirrels · 15/11/2023 12:55

I’ve never heard anyone use the term to describe it being less hot, even though technically it would be correct in the context of a heatwave. It’s just never used that way in my experience, in Britain at least.

minou123 · 15/11/2023 12:55

C. Neither

I dont understand what people mean when they say "it's milder", it's confusing to me.....

is it colder? Is it hotter? I don't know
I just nod in agreement. 😁

Its5656 · 15/11/2023 12:56

Warmer

Endeavormorse · 15/11/2023 12:56

A - warmer

Pinkpinkpink15 · 15/11/2023 12:56

Divorce him anyway! How dare he argue with you!

😂

when it's colder it means 'less cold'

RampantIvy · 15/11/2023 12:57

However when referring to weather it's almost always used to mean warmer.

The term "mild" is always used on the weather forecast after a cold spell to indicate that it is going to be less cold.

spookehtooth · 15/11/2023 12:57

How can only get this wrong 🤔 Milder is colder, less windy etc. Every weather programme uses it this way.

I can see the wrong people's use causing so much confusion in the future. OMG thousands of people in sub Saharan Africa are dying due to extreme mild weather. Global heating is so terrible 🤣🤣🤣

Highlyflavouredgravy · 15/11/2023 12:57

Warmer
Mild weather is warm for the time of year

Edited

This is my exact thinking.

Milder = warmer, less cold but not approaching boiling hot

DP thinks "milder" means cooler, colder, less hot.
IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES - not just compared to a boiling hot day yesterday (in which case, the usual word would be "cooler" IMHO).

Seriously, me and DP are just about ready to break up over this.
