My recommendation is For Sama

Lovethatforyouhun · 14/11/2023 08:41

HyperNormalisation by Adam Curtis. Love any Adam Curtis.

Grey Gardens.

Seconded @funbags3 !

Just found this amazing documentary from 1975 about Jackie Kennedy's aunt and cousin living in poverty and squalor in their beachfront Hamptons mansion.

A precursor to reality tv I believe, but I can't quite decide if it was exploitation or not.

The mansion, Grey Gardens, was recently sold for approximately 20 million USD and it's amazing to see it covered with cat shit with raccoons eating sliced bread in the walls.

In the same vein, I couldn't stop watching Tiger King either. Has a similar vibe.

Depends what subject you like. The BBC’s Wonderland documentary series and also BBC doc series Storyville are usually beautifully made. BBC Horizon if you like science but production values not always as high.

ThatsKenough · 14/11/2023 09:20

And I love anything by the film maker Daniel Vernon

Bookmarking too

(Watching tab doesn't work with iPad for some reason)

funbags3 · 14/11/2023 11:26

@2pence It's really fantastic, isn't it?

Forsakenalmosthuman · 14/11/2023 11:27

More a clip than the whole thing. A twee Antarctic nature documentary wherein penguins were thieving cunts nicking stones from one another's nests.

bulletproofteatowel · 14/11/2023 14:29

Dead mums can't cry.

It's about (the lack of) maternity care in Chad. It's on youtube

TrailingFig · 14/11/2023 19:40

@sashh

Touching the Void and Free Solo are about climbing

funbags3 · 17/11/2023 20:55

I also have to add, Grizzly Man. A really sad story although hilarious in places.

Hillcrest2022 · 17/11/2023 21:01

Virunga is the best docu I've seen on Netflix. It starts off as a documentary about a gorilla sanctuary in the Congo and then they get set upon my militia so it turns into a real time war.
Lots of sinister backstop about oil companies funding the militia for their own greedy corporate gains. It sounds heave but, trust me, its compelling.

Hillcrest2022 · 17/11/2023 21:02

Backstory...not backstop !

spanktastic · 17/11/2023 21:11

Estonia, it's about the ferry that sunk with 852 lives lost, it's interesting but also very sad.

MoonriseKingdom · 17/11/2023 22:03

Lots of great suggestions already. A few that have stood out for me in recent times:

Waco: American apocalypse on Netflix
Athlete A on Netflix - although warning this is very hard hitting
Four hours at the capitol - BBC - about The events of January 6th
Subnormal: A British scandal - BBC
Raising a school shooter - BBC

If you look up Storyville on Bbc there’s loads of great documentaries from around the world

Davros · 17/11/2023 22:22

Dear Zachary (available on YouTube).
And Grey Gardens but I haven't seen it for years.

2pence · 18/11/2023 00:46

@funbags3 @Davros have you seen the HBO movie on Grey Gardens with Drew Barrymore as Little Edith and Jessica Lange as Big Edie?

Davros · 18/11/2023 13:32

I have but also ages ago. I need to dig them up
