In December 2019 I watched a documentary called "Mystify" about Michael Hutchence, lead singer of INXS.

I was never really that into him BUT what a fantastic documentary!!!!!

I remember so many people on social media praising it for being so fascinating.

Really worth a watch!

CocoonofDavid · 13/11/2023 11:17

After Tiller

It’s about abortion, specifically later abortion in the US. I watched it in 2014/2015 I think.

It followed 4 abortion doctors after the murder of Dr Tiller.

I found parts of it absolutely heartbreaking, women who struggled to afford care, would find out an abortion at x weeks (can’t remember exactly but early), would cost £Y. So would save up £Y… but now she was x+4 weeks and needed a different procedure that would cost more, so needed to save up again… and so on and so on.

It also looked at women having TFMR and the stigma surrounding it, as well as the abuse that these drs suffered and the security measures they had to take to stay safe.

I was so moved by it that I actually wrote to Dr Robinson (think that was her name). She wrote back to me.

It was 8 or more years since I watched it, it really impacted me.

The Octopus Teacher - award winning and amazing

Great thread!

Just remember these are created for entertainment purposes and are very biased.
Sometimes fake.

I remember watching one about diet a few years back and was shocked by some of the ‘facts’ on the show.
It turned out that a lot of it was fake and so since then I’ve been more skeptical.

My favourite 2 that come to mind are ‘making a murderer’ and ‘the staircase’.
Both are about women being killed and whether the men are guilty or not.

The one about the the whales at sea world was heart breaking and I cannot bring myself to watch the Don’t fuck with cats one, as I can’t cope with animal abuse.

I watched the Gabriel Fernandez one and that was also heartbreaking and I could have done without watching it tbh.

pobparker · 13/11/2023 12:27

i'm a big documentary watcher
Night wil fall - about the holocaust liberation from camps -still on C4 - absolutely harrowing
Hillsbourogh by Daniel Gordon-still cannot get my head around the injustice
Life on death row BBC Iplayer
and another vote for once upon a time in Northern Ireland

pobparker · 13/11/2023 12:30

Forgot to add -Aids the unheard tapes-BBC Iplayer shows how narrow minded society used to be in early 80's ,Gay men were really marginilsed unless you lived a big city

LindorDoubleChoc · 13/11/2023 12:57

Just remembered another one which really stayed with me - Rain In My Heart - a 2006 documentary about alcoholics and alcoholism and their treatment. It was incredibly profound and moving.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 13/11/2023 13:03

The boy whose skin fell off - absolutely heartbreaking.

Winnipeggy · 13/11/2023 13:05

The Jinx
The Imposter
Making a Murderer

Dontsayyouloveme · 13/11/2023 13:11

Blackfish, Sherpa, seaspiracy, aftershock, the volcano - all Netflix!!

SprogTakesAQuarry · 13/11/2023 13:13

Lots mentioned here that I would second.

The Fyre festival one is awesome - the mind blowing stupidity and arrogance of the organiser! I’ve seen it three times and it never gets worse.

A pp also said the basketball version of Last Chance U. I don’t think there are many better made documentaries in recent times. Im not into basketball, but that didn’t make a difference at all.

Another fantastic basketball doc is the Netflix Jordan/Chicago Bull series. Really informative and compelling.

The Fleetwood Max doc by BBC that a PP mentioned is another one that stuck with me, despite not having an interest in the band when I started watching.

There are two incredible climbing docs I saw a couple of years ago. One is called Free Solo and one called the Dawn Wall.

BBCs Legend of Snooker is great - fascinating and a real insight into recent British history and culture.

Ive also just finished Chimp Empire on Netflix which I really recommend. It’s like David Attenborough meets the Wire.

Wild Wild Country on Netflix is the insane story of a cult in Oregon.

Slightly sillier - Tinder Swindler will have you hooked from the start. Also about coercive control is Puppet Master - really terrifying.

GrouchyKiwi · 13/11/2023 13:15

Senna

TheHateIsNotGood · 13/11/2023 13:18

Recently - Larrimah; of all time 'Shoah'

TrailingFig · 13/11/2023 02:51

An old one but Touching the Void

Have you seen Free Solo, and even better - The Dawn Wall? Amazing stuff.

Getdowngetdown · 13/11/2023 13:29

Agree the fyre festival doc is amazing but the best and most preposterous documentary I’ve seen is called collective and is a Romanian doc about huge healthcare failings and corruption uncovered in the aftermath of a catastrophe - brilliant and truly shocking

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 13/11/2023 13:40

‘Searching for the Wrong-eyed Jesus’

If you are interested in the side of America we don’t get to see and love the American folk & blues tradition, this is such an evocative and moving documentary.

Minikievs · 13/11/2023 13:41

The deepest breath was brilliant

Riverlee · 13/11/2023 13:43

Don’t recall what it’s called, but there were three men who had been sexually abused at a boarding school recounting their experiences. For some reason, it stands out in my kind.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 13/11/2023 13:45

‘Wisconsin Death Trip’

Docudrama which dramatizes a series of macabre incidents that took place in and around Black River Falls, Wisconsin in the late-19th century.

Squirrelsnut · 13/11/2023 13:46

Supersize Me. Funny but also horrifying.
Searching for Sugarman.
Kurt and Courtney.

Riverlee · 13/11/2023 13:46

Regarding learning something, Patrick Kilty, whos father was killed in the troubles, has done a couple of documentaries about Ireland.

minou123 · 13/11/2023 13:54
