Once upon a time in Northern Ireland is very compelling

Yes I agree, a brilliant watch. I really has no idea exactly what went on there, I've got the last part left to watch.

bonkersAlice · 13/11/2023 07:03

Metroland : John Betjeman

Born in Gaza - brilliant but upsetting watch.

Rescue from Whakaari which is about the volcano thar erupted on the island of NZ. I follow one of the survivors from it on IG now.

I don't know about 'best' (always struggle with that label) but recently we've enjoyed watching 'Wham' and 'Beckham' on Netflix. They both leave you feeling like you've heard the other side of a story you thought you knew because you saw the headlines at the time.

The Tower: A tale of two cities.

It was on ridiculously late for me but I stayed up to watch it week after week.
Ended up winning a Bafta award for best factual series.

Does this tell the history of the conflict? It's not clear from the synopsis. If it does, I'd like to watch it with my 17yo son, who knows nothing about NI conflict.

The synopsis makes it sound as if they assume you know all the history and that it's just about the stories of people affected.

Yes it does, its really informative but also told through the stories of others but I learnt a lot. Its a really good documentary.

Blackfish and The Cove - both equally disturbing, upsetting but more people need to watch both of them.
Not anything to learn but the Robbie Williams documentary on Netflix I have really enjoyed watching.

eandz13 · 13/11/2023 08:29

Secrets in Plain Sight on YouTube. Mind blowing.
It's pretty niche though, you'd have to be interested in geometry and symbology I think!

PearlClutzsche · 13/11/2023 08:33

When I had just given birth 14 years ago and was tired and hormonal I was absolutely hooked by a documentary series about Russian art by Andrew Graham Dixon.
I watched it whilst breastfeeding, and when I finished it went back to the beginning and watched it again!
It was so informative about Russian history as well as art. Fascinating.

I'll second the votes for
Touching The Void, and
Free Solo
and add
Man on Wire

Storyville have made dinner good documentaries.

I watched Ruinerwold on BBC4 iPlayer recently - that was better than the blurb might have suggested.

A lot of Louis Theroux’s documentaries. He did one about people living with dementia which was incredible, and the film he did about Scientology was excellent.

Greatest documentary I've ever seen is Ken Burns's The Civil War, made in 1990. Groundbreaking then and remains an extraordinary piece of television.

That was out of this world. Riveting.

Best documentary series ever made: Life on Earth. Nothing else will ever come close.

If you want some diverting one-offs, then we quite enjoy Abandoned Engineering.

Otherwise, anything with Prof Brian Cox will blow your mind.

Firstshoes · 13/11/2023 08:51

A lion in the house. So very very sad.

megletthesecond · 13/11/2023 08:54

Once upon a time in Iraq. It's utterly heartbreaking, and maddening, for everyone on all sides.

I second (third? Fourth? Lol) blackfish on Netflix. Also seaspiracy was eye opening.

I also noticed a documentary called cowspiracy too but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

I little known truth as to how close we came to nuclear war, but didn't when Stanislav Petrov disobeyed an order durning the Cold War.

Oh prof Cox is brilliant!! I watched a documentary of his on mathematics years ago and I wish I could remember what it was called

waverleywitch · 13/11/2023 09:13

For Sama about a young Syrian woman in Aleppo and Dreams of a Life about a woman who died and lay undiscovered in her London flat for years , I found both very moving.

Needhelp101 · 13/11/2023 09:21

Some great suggestions here. Definitely Blackfish and Fyre.

Mine is The Imposter, the true story of a 13 boy who disappeared in Texas and three years later was found in Spain... Or was he? Jaw dropping.
