What Age Did Your Parents Become GPs?

Lilpastry · 10/11/2023 09:19

I ask because my parents are 55 and 65 and DHs are both 58. We aren't planning kids for about 3 years or so (been together 8, but only married 1).

Anyway, we get lots of frustrated chat (particularly from DHs parents), about time passing and them being too old to be first time grandparents and what are we waiting for etc.

However, neither of us are even 30 yet! DH will be 32 and I'll be 30 when we start trying. All going to plan, my parents will be around 58 and 68 and his will be 61. I don't see the rush, and would say these are normal ages for GPs?

Both in their 40s, but I was a teen mum (first at 18, second at 20 - both contraceptive fails) so that skews it a bit.
Partners parents were in their late 60s when partners sister had her child

Never, and there won't be any grandchildren. Frankly, one of the worst things a parent can say to their adult child is something making a fuss about becoming a grandparent - it's not their decision as to when, or even if, a grandchild might arrive. They need to butt out.

I agree and I'm extremely grateful that my parents never pestered me about having children.

I had four alive when I was born, one lived until I was 19 as I was a first child of a first child of a second child. Others were much older due to birth order. DS has two alive. Meeting them is not unusual in my circle.

I'm 41 and up until 3 years ago I had 2 great grandparents. My ds is 13 so had 2 great great grandparents up until he was 10.

39 and 43. I’m in my 40’s and couldn’t contemplate being a grandparent- I don’t feel old enough by a long shot. Hopefully I won’t become one for at least another ten years or longer.

TreeTopples · 10/11/2023 14:45

75 and 58. DF didn't want to have anything to do with them as children should be seen and not heard and DM always defers to him. They have practically zero relationship with DC and have never "done" anything with them.
IL's were early 60's and MIL was very involved when they were young and FIL more now they're interesting and he's retired so has more patience! They've taken them on holiday without us etc. MIL has some health issues and have had less contact in the past year, but DC also have more school and activities now.
DD (10 😂) has already decided we'll be babysitting her DC so she'd better not leave it til we're 80!

familyissues12345 · 10/11/2023 14:47

My parents 45 and 50 when DS1 was born.

DH's Dad was 65 (DM had died a few years before)

My parents are about to become GP again as my brother's gf is having one. My parents will be 65 and 70 by the time that little one is born

YouWontHearTheLastOfIt · 10/11/2023 14:49

My own parents were Grandparents were 44 and 49 (to my eldest brother's kids).

I was a Granny at the age of 52, husband was 53

ALongHardWinter · 10/11/2023 14:53

My mum was 55 and my dad was 58.

Blackeyeliner · 10/11/2023 14:56

My mum complained about being far too young to be a grandmother when she became one at 52! I think your 50's is a good time to become a grandparent. My own were in their 70's and as hands on as possible, but more elderly than a lot of 70 year old seem now!

PrudeyTwoShoes · 10/11/2023 14:58

We had our first baby at age 25/26 and second almost 4 years later at 29/30. Grandparents on my side are in their 50s and on husbands side they're 40s.

ShutTheDoorBabe · 10/11/2023 14:59

My sister became a first time nan at 38.

That's appalling. Kids having kids

gingercat02 · 10/11/2023 15:01

Dad was 69 and Mum was 67. PiL 75 and 79. We were nearly 40.

Surely you can't be that shocked that you have to use that many question and exclamation marks. My parents were similar ages to this. I had my first child at 20, my mum and dad had me at 22 and 27. Nothing against older parents but I'm glad I had completed my family by 28, couldn't be starting now( mid 30s) and carrying on into my 40s

We were nearly 40 when we had DS not became GParents, before I get judged by the previous posters.
You can legally be a grandparent at 33ish BTW. Not ideal but it happens.

Meh. My DC and my mum (42 when ds1 was born) are so unbelievably close. I love their relationship. My DCs were also lucky enough to have 4 great-grandparents when they were born. They have 1 left now. (And yes, they may have been just as close had she been older, not she wasn't)

Hes technically a great-great-grandad.
My uncle was a great grandad in his late 50s.
I've got friends who were grandparents in their 30s.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 10/11/2023 15:21

55 and 57.
Me and dh became GPS ourselves at 53 and 54.
