What Age Did Your Parents Become GPs?

Lilpastry · 10/11/2023 09:19

I ask because my parents are 55 and 65 and DHs are both 58. We aren't planning kids for about 3 years or so (been together 8, but only married 1).

Anyway, we get lots of frustrated chat (particularly from DHs parents), about time passing and them being too old to be first time grandparents and what are we waiting for etc.

However, neither of us are even 30 yet! DH will be 32 and I'll be 30 when we start trying. All going to plan, my parents will be around 58 and 68 and his will be 61. I don't see the rush, and would say these are normal ages for GPs?

Only my mum was alive and she was 79. She had me (only child) at 45 and I had my first at 34.

I'm 41 and up until 3 years ago I had 2 great grandparents. My ds is 13 so had 2 great great grandparents up until he was 10.

Wow!

Actually, no, they were 52 and 57 - DH's brother had a child before we did.

GreenDay9irl · 10/11/2023 15:50

Mum was 36 dad 39 when my sister had her 1st.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 10/11/2023 15:53

PartnersInCrime · 10/11/2023 15:55

elp30 · 10/11/2023 16:00

My mother died when I was a kid and my father was 52.

My in-laws were aged 46 and 49.

I had my first grandchild at age 41.

mamatoTails · 10/11/2023 16:03

Mine were 47 & 48, MIL was 49.

heetud · 10/11/2023 16:03

If you want a good chance of being grandparents younger the only element of control you can have on that is having kids young yourself! (Whilst still being entirely out of control of course) they didn't, so they can't expect you to for them!!

Carsarelife · 10/11/2023 16:05

They were 54 and 56.

Not that it made a difference. Never paid any attention to their grandkids

ForfarBridie · 10/11/2023 16:05

37 and 44

ForfarBridie · 10/11/2023 16:06

Sorry. I had my first grandchild at 46

That's appalling. Kids having kids

Not necessarily, could easily be 18/19 year olds

heetud · 10/11/2023 16:15

What sort of people do you associate with?!

Why are you being a twat? You clearly have a massive chip on your shoulder about this topic.

PabloandGustheGreySquirrels · 10/11/2023 15:00

43?!?!?!?!?! That's insane!

Do you struggle with maths? It's perfectly reasonable. My parents were 44 and 45, they had me at 22 and 23, I had DS at 22. All of us adults.

Crunchymum · 10/11/2023 16:34

This is why I struggled with MIL outrage at being GM at 50 - that and she was quite nasty at the time.

DH was 30 an entire decade older than them having a baby - but apparently she's expect him to wait to 40 so she would be nearer 60 but she then boasts about having all their 40s mortgage paid off and kid fee and worries we are so far behind Hmm - when we are basically a decade behind - and lucky to be there.

Gwenhwyfar · 10/11/2023 16:41

DH past 70 and DM pushing 70. It ended up being too late for them to be active gps. Babysitting is out of the question.

AutumnIsMyFriend · 10/11/2023 16:45

Via my brother they were 51 and 57, via me about five years later.

HangTheJib · 10/11/2023 16:47

Ugh I'd have for ZERO patience for being nagged by my parents and in laws about making them grandparents.

You're in your 20s, you're enjoying your first year of marriage. Tell them to bloody well zip it. You're not living your life for them.

JordanCatalano4Eva · 10/11/2023 17:06

My parents were 39,they’re 62 now and have 17 grandchildren

mondaytosunday · 10/11/2023 17:08

In their 70s. They had me late 30s and I had mine in my 40s. My sister had her child mid 40s.

DontListenToWhatYouveConsumed · 10/11/2023 17:25

It's not the age, it's the attitude

RandomUsernameHere · 10/11/2023 17:28

64 and 60. DH's are a little bit younger
