What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

I thought I had read this thread before but can’t seem to find it, so I’ll ask again. What’s the best advice that you’ve ever received? I’m in need of some inspiration. My two are:
Don’t take criticism from someone who you wouldn’t take advice from; and
Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good

One from my dad, don’t put anything in writing that you wouldn’t want to be read out in court.
one from mumsnet when people show you who they are, believe them.

Put it all in bin bags and sort it out at the other end

You’d be surprised how many situations it’s applicable to.

This too shall pass.

There are no happy endings, so have a happy now.

You should never have to brake on the motorway.

What does the motorway one mean?

I think mine was when someone pointed out that when you show someone a group photo, everyone looks for themselves first. Therefore never worry about what people think of you, or messing up in front of others, because people are far too busy obsessing about themselves to worry about you. It’s so true and liberating. I live my life by it.

When I was a younger and had just started work, i used to countdown the days saying that I couldn’t wait until Christmas/holidays/events etc until an older lady told me that I must never wish my life away. It really stuck. Especially when I began teaching and everybody was always counting down the weeks until term ended, just basically wishing for the days to pass!
so: don’t wish your life away.

Wrong. This was my DH’s mantra when we moved house 11 years ago and I’m still cursing him for it.

Your gut feeling is usually right. Listen to it especially when it relates to people.

That is the worst advice ever. ‘Gut feeling’ is usually wrong, frequently harmful and generally thoughtless.

MrsMoastyToasty · 10/11/2023 00:00

From my dad.

  1. Tell your bank what you want to do with your money/overdraft before they tell you what they are doing with it/ask you to shove off.
  2. Don't assume that the people you work with are your friends. They are people who are paid to do the same tasks as you and may have their own agendas/ambitions. If they are a friend, it's a bonus.
Weenurse · 10/11/2023 00:07

Out of date now that we are moving to a cashless society.
If you don’t want to walk to the bank to get the money out- you don’t really need / want it.

lolawasashowgirl · 10/11/2023 00:08

If you do what you've always done you'll get what you've always got

You make your own luck

StrandedStarfish · 10/11/2023 00:14

Always buy a good bed and good shoes. If you aren’t in one, you’re in the other

StrandedStarfish · 10/11/2023 00:15

Why should you help? Because you can.

foxlover47 · 10/11/2023 00:16

You can't polish a turd

snoreb · 10/11/2023 00:31

You can't control how other people think about you and it's none of your business. Unless someone says 'I'm annoyed at you because of xyz 9/10 it's not your issue, not your business and nothing to do with you x

I asked a mum of teenage boys for advice as my boys were on the brink of adolescence. She said keep talking to them and make them feel like they can talk to you. No matter what they do and whether you like it. Just keep talking.

foxlover47 · 10/11/2023 00:42

No is a complete sentence ...

Work is to make money to make our life better so don’t work to the detriment of your life.

Aim for done instead of perfect and not done.

Sleep on big decisions and bad moods. The morning usually brings clarity and perspective.
