Would you ever spend a lot of money on a pen?

Not something I've particularly considered before but I've got a lovely new planner type thing and I'm being bugged for what I'd like for my birthday this month and I wondered if I'd actually quite like a posh pen!

The one I've seen that I like is a lot of money - silly money really, in the 100s. But it comes in at what this person usually would spend on me and it struck me as something I'd keep for life. Or until I lost it 😀

Anyway it got me thinking - would you just stick with any old thing or do you have a lovely pen?

I wouldn't personally.

tartandress · 07/11/2023 21:30

I have a nice pen - a Lamy. They are about £20 so it's not too much of a disaster if I lose it. But I love using it!

Sparehair · 07/11/2023 21:31

I have a mont blanc and use it all the time so I would say yes. I’ve had it 5 years and haven’t lost it. I did lose the first one after a year though.

Fullofthejoysofspring · 07/11/2023 21:31

I love lovely pens, and I have a few. They're not hugely expensive in that I don't spend hundreds of pounds. £75-£150 is usually my limit!

Mumeries · 07/11/2023 21:31

are you a shopaholic

NoraLuka · 07/11/2023 21:32

I did once as a Christmas present for someone who asked for one. It was about 30€ I think so not 100s but still more than I’d ever spent on a pen before! It was well received and he still has it years later so I don’t regret it.

Spirro · 07/11/2023 21:33

I have a £400 pen. I paid for it entirely with Tesco clubcard vouchers. The look on the sales assistant’s face was priceless!

CatamaranViper · 07/11/2023 21:34

I've got a couple of Swarovski pens that were about £25 each (about 10 years ago tbf!) And I felt like a baller with them. Still have them, still use them, but now? I wouldn't spend that much on a pen, let alone £100+

thistimelastweek · 07/11/2023 21:34

Lovely pens are like lovely umbrellas- you always lose them.

cocksstrideintheevening · 07/11/2023 21:34

Yes I did and I love it.
I'm the only person I know that takes notes in fountain pen though.

Actually444 · 07/11/2023 21:35

Absolutely yes. BUT a lot of money to me might be different to a lot of money for others. So my family all chipped in and bought me a pen for my graduation gift. It was £60. That for me was a lot of money. I'd been saying since day one of my degree I wanted this exact pen as a reward for my graduation but planned to buy it for myself. I cried lots when I opened it on graduation day. So yes. I would spend a lot of money on a pen. But relative to my income if that makes sense. If I had hundreds to spend on a pen I absolutely would and there's lots I'd love to buy haha. I say if you have the money, do it.

Actually444 · 07/11/2023 21:36

Sorry just read this post properly. Yes! If the gift giver would usually spend that amount of money on you, ask for the pen!!

CurlewKate · 07/11/2023 21:37

Need to see the pen before I decide. But I might....

TheOwlChronicles · 07/11/2023 21:38

@Mumeries why do you ask? Confused

If you’re not used to a fountain pen I would recommend that you try a cheaper one first to see if you like using a nib and wet ink.

I find Waterman pens best for comfort and smoothness.

QueSyrahSyrah · 07/11/2023 21:38

Not quite in your ballpark but I have a lovely ballpoint pen that I use for work, I believe it was around £50 and I've easily had it 8 years or so now.

MainlyOnThePlain · 07/11/2023 21:38

I love fountain pens! You could get a new Parker 51 and some Diamine inks and still have plenty of change from £100.

suntannedsnowballs · 07/11/2023 21:38

I bought DH a Montblanc

Waste of time

He's too afraid of breaking it

He used it once, to fill in DD's birth registration details

bogoblin · 07/11/2023 21:39

Yes - on some lovely fountain pens that I use on a daily basis! I get joy from using them and because they were expensive, I always look after them.

TheOwlChronicles · 07/11/2023 21:39

It's a ballpoint as I can't see myself with a fountain pen! I'd end up with ink everywhere

@suntannedsnowballs ha ha money well spent then!

MinnieL · 07/11/2023 21:41

I wouldn’t spend more than £2 on a pen. And £2 is pushing it. I’d expect a pack of 4 at LEAST

TheOwlChronicles · 07/11/2023 21:42

@bogoblin that's an encouraging post! Grin
