Would you ever spend a lot of money on a pen?

Not something I've particularly considered before but I've got a lovely new planner type thing and I'm being bugged for what I'd like for my birthday this month and I wondered if I'd actually quite like a posh pen!

The one I've seen that I like is a lot of money - silly money really, in the 100s. But it comes in at what this person usually would spend on me and it struck me as something I'd keep for life. Or until I lost it 😀

Anyway it got me thinking - would you just stick with any old thing or do you have a lovely pen?

@TheOwlChronicles that Mont Blanc is lovely-but it's too short for writing in a journal. You won't use it, sorry.

CurlewKate · 07/11/2023 22:14

Amused that I have written Mont Blanc on Mumsnet twice today- once a pen and once a pudding!

TheOwlChronicles · 07/11/2023 22:15

@TokyoSushi oh I'm a a bit embarrassed about that! Lovely though it is 😀

I needed something that I could meal plan in, write lists, wrote some daily / weekly goals and also use for recording work hours as I do client work and am all over the place

So I went searching and finally settled on ... a raspberry coloured A5 ... FILOFAX

Hello again 1994!

I have a £400 pen. I paid for it entirely with Tesco clubcard vouchers. The look on the sales assistant’s face was priceless!

I bought diamond earrings on tesco points

Motheranddaughter · 07/11/2023 22:16

My DH loves the Mont Blanc I bought him 10 years ago

TheOwlChronicles · 07/11/2023 22:17

@CurlewKate ha! What are the chances of that eh?

Maybe it is a little short. That appealed to me and I do have another short pen and it's fine for the little writing that I do. I more thought it may be a bit slippy! Could be part of the charm maybe Grin

I spent £275 15 years ago, I still use it everyday and it makes my working day more enjoyable.

eurochick · 07/11/2023 22:18

I love a nice pen. I have an antique Schaefer that I bought as a present to myself 15-20 years ago. I use it pretty much daily. I love the way it writes.

@TheOwlChronicles

if I could find one I loved I would.

I mourned when muji stopped selling my favourite ever one & tried out it bought a load from other places when the had a one that looked similar. The best option at the time was to change the colour (Muji did the one still, just not the colour. That worked for a while, but then they changed the body of the pen and I hated the changes...and on it goes. They're still the best one I've ever used.

I have tried out a lot of expensive pens, but not one I liked.

the one you linked to would be too short for me and I only have little hands, but for me, short pens don't sit right.

TheChosenTwo · 07/11/2023 22:19

Absolutely not. I use a pen from a multipack to scribble notes for work. Other than that, I barely write anything by hand. Birthday cards and Christmas gift tags are springing to mind, signing ds homework book, hardly anything.
I wouldn’t appreciate a fancy pen.
BUT it sounds like you really would and I definitely splash out and treat myself to plenty of things that others wouldn’t appreciate - get the pen!

Cotswoldbee · 07/11/2023 22:19

Bought a pen for my sister when it was a special birthday.
Won't say how much (TBH I can't remember the exact amount) but it was a LOT!
That said, it was what she wanted and she loved it (and still does).

I have a bunch of fountain pens. I think The most I've paid for one is about £160. I have several that would retail for more than that, but I bought them used.

When I realised that I literally have pens from Ali Express that cost £1 that write as well, I stopped buying more pens. I do enjoy a good vintage Parker, but I'm never going to pay for an expensive pen again.

I would never pay a lot of money for a ballpoint pen.

Crabward · 07/11/2023 22:27

Some people spend thousands on a handbag or designer clothes - if you want an expensive pen then go for it!

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 07/11/2023 22:33

I love fountain pens, have a small collection, mainly Chinese brands (Hongdian do some really nice pens, as do Majohn and Jinhao), but I have some more expensive pens - most expensive was around £200, and DH bought me that.

So many lovely inks to choose from as well.

FrillyGoatFluff · 07/11/2023 22:34

I have a personalised montblanc - was my first ever Christmas present from DH. It has lived in my bag for a decade - I use it daily, and absolutely love it.

I also have a raspberry pink, leather a5 Filofax, which DH also bought me and I also tote everywhere and scribble in all the time. We're clearly on the same wavelength OP!

This is the one I like for any experts out there to give an opinion on?

I like the look of it, but tried it and it is too small for me. It really irritated me to write with. I think you need to try it in store.

Barnowlsandbluebells · 07/11/2023 22:39

I've used fountain pens since I was at prep school so I definitely think lovely pens are worth the money and I get a lot of enjoyment out of them.

TheOwlChronicles · 07/11/2023 22:41

@FrillyGoatFluff we are like stationery twins! Next you'll tell me you have a make up and skincare obsession too and we'll REALLY be in business!

I have a nice pen; not massively expensive but someone important to me got it engraved for my graduation. The trouble is I get so stressed about losing it! I took it to the office until I realised I spent so much time worrying about the pen, checking I haven’t lost it in a meeting room, that it’s in my bag when I go home. It’s not like jewellery where at least I’m wearing it. Sometimes I wake up in the night wondering if know where the pen is 😁I appreciate not everyone is as extreme as me 😂

TheOwlChronicles · 07/11/2023 22:41

@Snugglemonkey yes this is a concern. I'll google if there's a store relatively near here

I use Waterman pens. They wrote exceptionally smoothly and I like the W on the pen as my name begins with a W. Most Waterman's are £70 upwards.

HundredMilesAnHour · 07/11/2023 22:48

I love a good pen. It started when I first used a fountain pen at primary school and went from there.

I have 3 Mont Blanc pens - 1 is my everyday pen (it lives in my bag and is used constantly but especially when I'm travelling / out and about), 1 is my work pen (it lives in my work Smythson writing folder and I use it every day at work) and 1 is my back-up (which has never been needed). I got my first one almost 30 years ago and I've never lost one despite one travelling round the world with me.

I also have a beautiful handmade to order pen made from reclaimed oak burr and jade resin from Tom's Studio. It's stunning. I use it for writing birthday cards etc. It's my 'nice writing pen'.

I bought a very close friend a Mont Blanc pen (engraved with his name) for his 40th. I think he mainly sits and strokes it. 😂

caringcarer · 07/11/2023 22:48

My Dad bought me a Waterman fountain pen when I passed my A levels and I used it to write my degree exam responses. Dad had died then but every time I use it I think of my Dad. I've now got the matching rollerball too.

Theforeverhome · 07/11/2023 23:00

I have a short Mont Blanc Boheme with an emerald which I used daily for years and stays in my handbag for when I need to write now (not often). It’s in its own soft leather case which isn’t the one that you normally see in the shops selling Mont Blanc - it came from their own shop which was a bit of an eye opener.

Go for it!
