What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

I've had 2ml put in mine over time (two years) I think mine look great and I don't have the ledge. They've given me much more confidence when wearing lipsticks as I like to wear bright colours (orange, red, bright pink) some do go overboard but each to their own I say 👍🏼

I can't know what you looked like before and if you "needed" this or not

but your lips look amazing.

I'm mid 40s and these are a selection of my lips from over the last 14 years.

I would be interested to know if people think I have had lip filler 😊
If so in what pictures?

Your photos are so heavily filtered that it is impossible to see a proper image.

I was served by someone at the bank the other week. They had badly done, overfilled lips, like sausages. It was actually impacting on the way they spoke. They also had the false looking, curled eyelashes which made their eyes look small. I was thinking about the future migration and how they'll need to use dissolver (not always problem free option or solution)

I'm surprised it was allowed in a public service role, but I may be unreasonable in saying so.

They don't look natural at all.

My bottom one is my natural lip, no fillers at all!!!

inamarina · 06/11/2023 14:36

I agree, OP. I don’t get why so many women seem to think it’s a great look.
I follow a woman on Instagram who generally has a great unique style and puts together beautiful outfits - but the lips! She actually has a horizontal crease above her upper lip - just why?

Fundays12 · 06/11/2023 14:36

I know what you mean. It's the frozen foreheads that I find odd. It's always obvious and seems addictive.

Stillwaitingfor · 06/11/2023 14:37

I once read something about the way our bodies evolved certain traits to attract a mate. Apparently boobs are supposed to resemble a bum (when squished together, something I now can't unsee whether it's true or not) and lips a vulva. When I see someone with those pillow lips all I can think is, you have a vulva on your face.

Chanelbasketballandchain · 06/11/2023 14:37

I can always tell when someone has fillers. Even a tiny amount.

a) you think you know, what kind of physical proof could you possibly have.

b) so what if you can tell? You can probably tell I wasn't born with that hair colour, I still look better with it 😂

MaryMcCarthy · 06/11/2023 14:39

Body dysmorphia really isn't it?

These women don't think they look like Donald Duck, whereas I think they do.

WorkBase · 06/11/2023 14:39

How much does it all cost? I was aghast when my friend told me her DD’s eyelashes cost £60!! She’s 17. And my niece had her first lip fillers for her 18th birthday. I don’t know how youngsters can afford to have fun these days - what with costly skincare regimes, enhancements - and to go to a big standard gig costs an arm and a leg. It must indirectly fuel fast fashion where you spend £5 on tops and £10 on dresses shipped by the container load from Shein and Temu because you’ve blown your budget on all the expensive stuff. So some over-worked, poorly-paid child in the Far East is churning out cheap nylon, ‘barely there’ dresses to meet demand.

It’s the mass commercialisation and commodification of a ‘look’ that gets me. Each to their own I guess - but we’re kind of losing sight of what ‘our own’ is.

Some good examples of lip-fillers done well on here though.

At some point we moved from just older women having botox/fillers to 20 and 30- somethings having treatments that they absolutely don’t need. I feel about 104 saying this but I find it a shame seeing people ruin their natural beauty.

But your notion of beauty might be different from theirs. Other women's faces aren't there to make you happy. The idea of 'natural beauty' is intrinsically harmful anyway, as it implies that women who are not lucky enough to be born beautiful are somehow of less value because they choose to enhance themselves. Natural beauty is a) in the eye of the beholder and b) a fucking lottery, so let's not start praising women just for having the right genetics to meet your beauty standards.

TheresaCrowd · 06/11/2023 14:40

ManateeFair · 06/11/2023 14:34

I think when people say 'if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all' they really don't mean 'be nice and keep your mouth shut at all times'. They mean 'Don't be a total cunt about stuff that doesn't affect you'.

Which, honestly, is good advice.

By all means don't teach your kids to be nice about, eg, racists and wife-beaters. But definitely do teach them not to be judgy little bastards about the harmless choices women decide to make about their own faces.

Edited

This is a discussion forum though so surely the correct place to state you can't stand fillers, if indeed you can't?

I'm sure all these women will have plenty of people in real life biting their tongue, and not telling them what they really think.

Which is good obviously and the way it should be.

topnoddy · 06/11/2023 14:41

What with the lip filler and massive false eyelashes it's a cross between a porn star and Pete Burns look

JudgeJ · 06/11/2023 14:42

KingsleyBorder · 06/11/2023 13:54

Why? Most men think they look ridiculous too.

Yes but on MN men are to blame for everything!

Your photos are so heavily filtered that it is impossible to see a proper image.

They're cropped and too zoomed rather than filtered. All directly taken from google storage. I tried to get them all at a similar angle so some zoomed too much or quite old 😁 as I am!
Regardless I'm sure the sharp eyes of posters who "could spot a mile off" would easily detect it, if indeed I have had it!

Crikeyalmighty · 06/11/2023 14:43

@topnoddy lol- that's how it looks to me too

Skintoday · 06/11/2023 14:44

In my opinion, you should never be able to detect lip filler.
I run a successful aesthetics clinic and focus on extremely natural results.
I have a small amount of lip filler every 12-18 months.

I do agree that some lip filler can negatively detract from someone’s beauty and in 20 years many women will regret their lip filler decisions.

Less is more 😁

I'd say 2nd, 4th and 5th pics look like your lips have been filled. 1 and 3 look like your lips have been overlined with lip liner but no filled.

Did I get it right?! Am quite curious

(Also I ordered them 1,2, on top row, then 3,4,5 on bottom row left to right)

IAmtheVampiresWife · 06/11/2023 14:45

Most of the girls who work at the nail spa I go to have the full works - the eyebrows, the lashes , the lips and botox and they are all in their mid to late 20s. I expect if you work in this type of industry the pressure is immense . Lips are always so obvious by the line you see. That line can always be seen. It is like overstuffing a pillow .I also think that certain sectors of women tend to have these extras - as someone else said it's the Love Island and influencer effect. Obviously your peers and your circumstances heavily influence your decisions.

RubySunset82 · 06/11/2023 14:46

@Skintoday you can 100% tell you’ve had lipfiller but it doesn’t look bad. But it’s really clear you have!

Fairyliz · 06/11/2023 14:46

Well to be honest I’m not very keen and it’s not something I would do.
However I also don’t like seeing women with huge bottoms squeezed into tight black leggings; but I assume we are not allowed to mention that.

SayYesToTheWrapDress · 06/11/2023 14:48

I think a teeny bit of filler (0.5-1ml), done by someone who knows what they're doing, can look fine.

But any more than a teeny bit and they just look awful. And I reckon most women start with "a little bit". Then next time "just a little bit more"... and so on. Until you get the duck lips.

I have a beautiful friend, one of the most stunning women I've ever met. She's gone down the lip filler route in the last few year and (to me) it just looks awful (I obviously wouldn't say this to her as it's none of my business and if she likes it that's all that matters). I was looking at some old photos of us the other day and was really shocked by how different she looked before the fillers. She had beautiful natural lips. Now they look like a pair of shiny sausages.

I've never had lip fillers, but have had botox (not anymore as although I loved the effect I can't afford it on an on-going basis).

These lips look filled to me because the top lip is puckering out above the pink lip line ever so slightly. That doesn't happen with natural lips (or I haven't seen it happen).

The lips look very pretty and very subtle though

YourWinter · 06/11/2023 12:22

They are always obvious and look terrible, as do lashes and brows that have been “done”. It’s so sad that anyone feels the need to look so false.

Eyebrows definitely don't
Mine look totally natural

Toddlerteaplease · 06/11/2023 14:48

I can't bear the duck look!
