Suggestions for TV series or films set during war

DD (17) is really enjoying All the Light we Cannot See (yes not nearly as good as book etc) and it’s set her on a train of wanting to watch wartime dramas.

So not battle heavy war films, more dramas set during the war. And I say war, either WW1 or WW2.

I’ve thought of Schindlers List which may be a bit much - and am stuck. Suggestions appreciated.

She didn’t do History GCSE so is finding it an interesting learning too.

My boy Jack- about Rudyard Kipling's son and the family's story of WW1

Another vote for Foyle’s war.
I think it shows very interesting angle of human relationship and atmosphere at the Home front with lots of little details. It’s not difficult to watch but provokes a lot of interesting discussions.

It was on TV last year but is still available on some streaming subscriptions, and there are a few documentaries …

One to keep an eye out for is One Life, with Anthony Hopkins as Nicholas Winton who had been featured on That’s Life for arranging the saving of children from Prague as the war approached

For something a bit different, two films this year cover the story a few years ago of the man who disappeared from his old folks home to go to Normandy for the 70th anniversary of DDay

My Dad is a big aviation buff so I asked him and he suggested Aces High, Mosquito Squadron and 633 Squadron. He said they all have their combat action but also portray the characters of the pilots and crews.

Also, this isn't a film or TV show but I completely recommend you visit RAF East Kirkby, in SPILSBY Lincolnshire.

LINCOLNSHIRE AVIATION HERITAGE CENTRE PE23 4DE

It has the most fascinating museum I have been to recently
We spent a whole day there so much to see and not expensive to go in

They have lots of fascinating exhibits to see especially about The Dambusters

They have a Lancaster Bomber & a Mosquito that goes along the runway which is really impressive and loud (you can pay to ride on it but booking is about a year in advance)

🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

If you’re ever around Goodwood in West Sussex, there is a Spitfire that regularly flies over the Downs and along the coast. You can have a trip in it if you have a spare £3k.

Not there but where we live they fly over every weekend in the summer! Literally right over our garden.

There are some classic 1950 films - and the people in them often had fought in WW2.

The Cruel Sea
Sink the Bismark
Battle of the River Plate

Films based in true stores - such as The Cockleshell Heroes, Dambusters

Big classics such as A Bridge Too Far, Battle of Britain.

A lot to choose from

TV series Enemy at the Door was set in the occupied Channel Islands.

You can often find Ice Cold in Alex on TV movie channels.

A classic film.

The enemy was the desert.
