Suggestions for TV series or films set during war

DD (17) is really enjoying All the Light we Cannot See (yes not nearly as good as book etc) and it’s set her on a train of wanting to watch wartime dramas.

So not battle heavy war films, more dramas set during the war. And I say war, either WW1 or WW2.

I’ve thought of Schindlers List which may be a bit much - and am stuck. Suggestions appreciated.

She didn’t do History GCSE so is finding it an interesting learning too.

Season 2 of Downton Abbey is set during ww1.

There were two film made recently about the role of Polish airmen in the battle of Britain, Hurricane and 303 Squadron I totally recommend 303 Squadron it was Polish made and is bilingual with subtitles for the Polish parts. It's vastly better than the British made Hurricane but both show how the Battle of Britain could have had a very different outcome without the contribution of the Poles and how they were ignored at the end of the war to appease the Russians.

A town called Alice and The Pied Piper are films from novels written by Nevil Shute. Worth watching and reading.

Testament of Youth, truly unmissable film, a young woman coming of age during turbulent times.

Lots of things on You Tube .
I recommend documentaries about the Auxiliary Units.
PBS America is also very good.

I was going to suggest Grave of the Fireflies (sad story of two children's struggle to survive in Japan during WW2).

If you are in the mood for more gentle home front there's a few adaptions of children's books. Such as Goodnight Mister Tom, Carrie's War, and Back Home (same author as Goodnight Mister Tom).

The Cazalets tv series

Un village français
A french TV series, set in German-occupied France during the Second World War.
Absolutely brilliant, but hard to get hold of in the U.K.

A Small Light - on Disney is very good. It's about the people who hid Anne Frank but it isn't too heavy.

Not The Boy in the Striped Pjamas, both the book and the film are awful.
