Suggestions for TV series or films set during war

DD (17) is really enjoying All the Light we Cannot See (yes not nearly as good as book etc) and it’s set her on a train of wanting to watch wartime dramas.

So not battle heavy war films, more dramas set during the war. And I say war, either WW1 or WW2.

I’ve thought of Schindlers List which may be a bit much - and am stuck. Suggestions appreciated.

She didn’t do History GCSE so is finding it an interesting learning too.

TV series Enemy at the Door was set in the occupied Channel Islands.

You can often find Ice Cold in Alex on TV movie channels.

Millions LIke Us, film about women working in a factory in WW2

Also on the theme of women's work. The Gentle Sex, directed and narrated by Leslie Howard. On YouTube, I think.

Pimpernel Smith, updated version of The Scarlet Pimpernel, which Leslie Howard had made back in the 1930s. On YouTube, or was at one time. (Pimpernel Smith was an archaeologist; he must have known that other archaeologist who was around at the time, called Jones.)

Similar to Pimpernel Smith - Night Train to Munich, with Rex Harrison.

Un village français
A french TV series, set in German-occupied France during the Second World War.
Absolutely brilliant, but hard to get hold of in the U.K.

This is absolutely brilliant! I watched the whole lot during lockdown. One of the best things I've ever watched.

Another suggestion - Suite Francaise.

Not set during the war 'A Foreign Field' a film about a couple of old guys going back to visit the grave of their friend. Funny and touching.

Not my usual theme to watch, but 'The Trench' stuck with me.
Is about a group of soldiers last days before The Battle of the Somme.

Regeneration (film). Based on the Pat Barker novel about treatment of shell shock at Craiglockhart War Hospital - Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen and others

There was a great BBC series about 20 years ago called The 1940s House, in which a modern family lived life as in 1940s London during the Blitz, the house and all the details were just as they would have been during WW2. Really interesting if you can still find the episodes

One of the most moving things I have come across are the World War 1 letters between Geoffrey & Edith. I heard them on radio 4 and just trying to find the details now I have discovered they are available in book form. I'm going to order myself a copy now.

So many i would recommend all ready on here but haven't seen this one mentioned.

BigFatLiar · 05/11/2023 21:11

Al the Kings men
A tv film with David Jason.
Tells the story of a company raised from an estate during WW1 (like the pals brigades). I think they all got wiped out in a single battle.

Eeek the cheapest copy of the book I can find is £60+ but there appears to be an audio version on Spotify.
