You are heading towards almost exclusively self-checkout now.
The lady checking receipts at the exit was stopping
everyone.
I didn't choose to participate in that nonsense, I had already
filled my cart
emptied my cart
scanned the items
refilled my cart
and so I just skipped the exit line and left.
I heard her saying "umm - Excuse me " as I kept walking and raised the receipt above my head, leaving the store.
You can either trust me to do self-checkout, or you can put your cashiers back in place like it used to be.
I'm not interested in proving that I did your job for you.
• If you want me to be a cashier with no training then that's vour problem not mine.
• Keep employing young people and give them job opportunities.
YOU DON'T PAY ME TO SCAN MY OWN SHOPPING.
YOU DON'T GIVE ME STAFF DISCOUNT FOR WORKING FOR YOU.

Original...

I'm glad we have machines that can do repetitive tasks.

xogossipgirlxo · 04/11/2023 12:18

Never heard of receipts checking at the exit.

Sparklfairy · 04/11/2023 12:23

My Sainsburys has a machine which blocks your exit from the SC until you've scanned your receipt... so they've managed to get rid of the receipt checkers as well as the checkout staff.

Soon enough there'll be AI robots stacking shelves.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 04/11/2023 12:27

You get what you pay for. If you want low prices then there will not be many staff. I haven't been to Harrods food Hall lately but I doubt they are self scanning, it might suit you better.

Whatwouldscullydo · 04/11/2023 12:28

Our sainsbury has a scanner thing for the receipts so you can exit via the barrier. Half the self service tills are never working half the time. If u wanna pay cash you are pretty fucked as those seem to be the ones that are out of order. How anyone witg a buggy, wheelchair, walker etc is meant to be able to use the tiny space I dont know. Its ridiculous. We arebt paying any less for the shopping despite doing all the work for them.

YellowWiggle · 04/11/2023 12:33

In Matalan recently I had to scan and remove my own tags from the clothes - couldn’t bloody get it to work and had to wait for assistance anyway. Put me off going back there.

SoupDragon · 04/11/2023 12:35

I agree that this is the issue. The stores are in it for profit so it's either higher prices or lower costs.

Matalan's self checkouts are awful, I always seem to need assistance when I shop there.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 04/11/2023 12:48

Nope, I love self checkout, or even better self scan. I can go in, scan everything as I go, pack it straight away, then just pay and go. Looking forward to the day when it just automatically takes payment without me going to the till, I'm sure it won't be long! Much more efficient and frees up staff to keep the shelves stocked. There are always vacancies at my local Tesco so it's not like they are cutting jobs, just struggling to recruit like so many other businesses so need to redeploy the staff.

HappyMavis · 04/11/2023 12:50

"SPREAD IT AROUND!!!" 😂

No thanks.

SeaToSki · 04/11/2023 12:52

I was in an Amazon supermarket the other week (in the US) and if you had an Amazon credit card, you just self scanned your way around the shop and then walked over a sensor on the way out and it automatically charged your credit card (you did have to put the scanner back in a holder thingy too). I then got a text with how much I had paid and a 5% off my next visit coupon. It was amazing I didnt have to get my credit card out of my purse which was in my handbag and likely buried in the depths too.

This, self scan is the best. Headphones on, block out the NPCs and screaming children with a good podcast, whirl around packing as I go, pay, leave. The day it takes payment automatically and makes it even faster and more efficient? Bliss.

Even when they have to do a bag check it takes like 30 seconds, the guys in my local are really good at it, just whiz through scan ten items and send you on your way.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/11/2023 12:59

I will take my sweet time, I will let my child scan everything, my other child pick things up and call your one member of staff to constantly ok the scale change
i will put pink ladies through as gala

fuck you for taking away jobs and upping prices!

SeaToSki · 04/11/2023 12:59

Sorry posted too soon.

the only places round here where you have to have your receipt checked on the way out is Costco, and I understand that as the place is so big a herd of elephants could sneak out without paying. I wouldnt be happy with having to prove I had scanned everything after using a self checkout.

Mind you in some parts of the US, the shop lifting is so bad that they keep things locked up and you have to take a card to a shop assistant to get the item unlocked, so I would guess that people not scanning a couple of items in their shopping trolleys is such a small part of the overall equation that they dont bother beyond having cameras in the area

Legomania · 04/11/2023 13:06

Op, Facebook is that way

People who moan about taking away jobs and upping prices in the same breath need to go back to school

Mackeroo · 04/11/2023 13:09

I don't think I've ever got through a full self scan at Sainburys without the assistant having to come over to reset the bloody machine, it's always not recognising the weights of items. If they're going to force people into it they need to have reliable equipment.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 04/11/2023 13:10

Hmmmm……who are all these people who lurrrve self scanning and really never want to speak to another human being in a shop ever again? Because I certainly don’t see or speak to any of them whenever I am in Tesco or Aldi, queuing for longer at one of the fewer manned tills.
However….

Yesterday in Aldi all but two of the tills were opened again, last week in Tesco there were six manned tills instead of two. Profits must have been down, when people only buy the minimum they can bear to put through self scan.

Self scan for your lunch, fine. Self scan for people haters, fine. Keep the tills for the rest of us, please.

Are you the woman who posted similar last week and was an utter prick to the staff?

Spoiler alert: It's not their fault 🙄

I work in a supermarket and it absolutely is not taking away jobs. We are always short staffed.

This sounds dystopian.

If you had multiple cards or were with a partner, how could you make sure it went on the right card?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 04/11/2023 13:16

I also work in a supermarket. Generally we like the self serve machines (you would not BELIEVE how many other jobs there are to do in a supermarket apart from man the tills that we are supposed to be doing, usually simultaneously to manning the tills because there aren't enough staff). But self serve is best if you've got only a few items, you don't need to weigh loads of stuff through and you know how they work. My heart sinks when I see a person with a trolley full of stuff trying to put their shopping through when they clearly aren't certain of what they are doing.

There is always a member of staff available - there has to be, legally, for age checking, and you can generally ask to have a manned till opened for you. We'd rather man a till to put your shopping through than have to listen to the "BONG! Please wait for an assistant" fifty million times a day.

MetaverseMavis · 04/11/2023 13:23

If supermarkets are all shortstaffed, it is because they make it so damn difficult to apply. My college age teens apply, but until they are 18 they can't work the stupid hours (early starts and late finishes - gov rule) or near alcohol. Therefore they are automatically rejected on age. It was never like that back in the day.

TeaKitten · 04/11/2023 13:25

So this didn’t even happen to you, it’s just chainmail crap. Really should be against the talk guidelines.

AdoraBell · 04/11/2023 13:27

What would they do with DH, he never gets a receipt because of wasting paper/trees. So when he uses his card not his phone there’s nothing to check.
