You are heading towards almost exclusively self-checkout now.
The lady checking receipts at the exit was stopping
everyone.
I didn't choose to participate in that nonsense, I had already
filled my cart
emptied my cart
scanned the items
refilled my cart
and so I just skipped the exit line and left.
I heard her saying "umm - Excuse me " as I kept walking and raised the receipt above my head, leaving the store.
You can either trust me to do self-checkout, or you can put your cashiers back in place like it used to be.
I'm not interested in proving that I did your job for you.
• If you want me to be a cashier with no training then that's vour problem not mine.
• Keep employing young people and give them job opportunities.
YOU DON'T PAY ME TO SCAN MY OWN SHOPPING.
YOU DON'T GIVE ME STAFF DISCOUNT FOR WORKING FOR YOU.

I know it's the way things are going so senior people in the industry must see that it makes sense but isn't shoplifting a massive problem now? Outright raiding too. Even in our little local co op that happens - I seen a bunch of guys run in, grab crates of beer and run out again. It was pretty intimidating as obviously planned and got me thinking that I'd definitely not want to work in retail, especially at night, now that stores are so low staffed. And shops are losing money with all the stealing too.

BCBird · 04/11/2023 17:35

I had to go in.morrisons the other day. I usually have shopping delivered. They are down to 8 tills now- rest self scan. Cannot imagine the chaos at Christmas.n

Someone posted that original message on MN a while back, it was spotted, copied and it’s being posted on Twitter for likes - and now re-posted on MN without crediting the original poster.

If you want to make a point write your own post, don’t steal someone else’s.

TheJubileePortrait · 04/11/2023 17:38

It certainly isn’t signed from all of us. I love self-checkouts.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 04/11/2023 17:43

If you want low prices then there will not be many staff

I shop in Aldi. Cheapest supermarket in the area and no self-service checkouts. I also shop a bit in Booths. Most expensive supermarket in the area. It used to have a couple of self-service checkouts but got rid of them. On the rare occasions when I've been to self-service checkouts in other supermarkets, I've never had anyone ask to check anything. Is this a regional thing maybe?

You get what you pay for. If you want low prices then there will not be many staff. I haven't been to Harrods food Hall lately but I doubt they are self scanning, it might suit you better.

I don't think expecting people to pay Harrods prices is reasonable.

And I highly doubt this is about costs. Supermarkets make a LOT of money and Waitrose profits are lower than Tesco - the customer cost doesnt represent the company profits.

They do it, because they can.

Totally agree with the sentiment OP - it's becoming a real pain to shop in store, one of the reasons why I online shop now almost exclusively.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 04/11/2023 17:52

cocksstrideintheevening · 04/11/2023 15:02

There are self scanners I. Harrods food hall

Really, a long time since I visited, do they check receipts too?

1975wasthebest · 04/11/2023 17:52

All Aldi stores will have at least some self-service checkouts soon - why not? They’re a hell of a lot cheaper to run than employing people.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 04/11/2023 17:53

Why have you addressed it Dear supermarket? You know a supermarket can't read, it's an inanimate object.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 04/11/2023 17:56

Also, why do they ask if you want a receipt now? They check your shopping, so I need a receipt.
Also, don’t charge me 2/3 times as much for products and then treat me like your unpaid lackey.
I only use self service if I have a small shop ie; basket.
I walked out of Sainsbury’s when the woman in the self check outs told me I had to scan my own shopping. I had £120 of shopping, left it there and then went to Aldi. I’m a Sainsbury’s share holder too, not impressed with them.

Tumbleweed101 · 04/11/2023 18:00

I do my big shop for online delivery and one of the reasons I do it is because it takes so long to use the self service tills if the couple of manned tills have long queues. If I pop in for a few items I will use the self service but I still prefer using the manned tills if I can.

I prefer manned tills for clothing shops too.

Timeflieswhenyourehavingfun · 04/11/2023 18:01

This tedious shit again.
I absolutely love self check out, particularly Tesco Scan and Go.
So much quicker and no bags to pack.
I die a bit inside if I have to queue for a checkout.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 04/11/2023 18:06

I work at Waitrose and you can use vouchers at the checkout when you use shop pay go? Just press voucher/coupon before pressing debit/credit to pay then scan and put the voucher in the slot or if it’s a voucher on your phone you just press coupon and scan it.

I work on the cigarette counter on a Saturday and I’m afraid I love self scanning and self checkout.

mydogspooeybum · 04/11/2023 18:11

It bloody annoys me too. Even more
annoying is that they have 3 or
4 staff just hanging around waiting for a customer to have a problem with the self scanner. Why don't they just put those 3 or 4 people on checkouts instead ???

I will take my sweet time, I will let my child scan everything, my other child pick things up and call your one member of staff to constantly ok the scale change
i will put pink ladies through as gala

fuck you for taking away jobs and upping prices!

You do realise that they up the prices because of theft on self service checkouts?

Also letting your kids play shop does absolutely nothing but piss off every other customer in the queue behind you.

Since the pandemic retail staff are dead inside and don't care for your show of defiance.

StaunchMomma · 04/11/2023 18:34

Yawn.

You don't have to like everything but you do need to realise that some people do.

Also, very few supermarkets have only self-checkouts. If you don't like them, don't use them.

Often, in our local big Tesco at least, they’re too busy chatting amongst themselves to notice and you have to go over, interrupt them and ask for help.

I don’t mind self service, and I really like the speed of them in Aldi, but I’d like to see more that give you the choice of paying with cash or card.

I had to buy a white goods item for my Dad, he’s 90 and cash is king to him. He doesn’t trust cards and doesn’t have online banking so I’ve paid and he’s given me cash. I’ve not had chance to pay it in at a bank or post office so thought I’d use some of it up in shops. I’ve tried in Tesco today but out of 20 or so self service checkouts only two were accepting cash and there was a queue of people waiting to use them at the side of the normal queue.

Oh, and Ikea are doing receipt scanning at their self service checkouts now.

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/11/2023 18:41

My local Sainsburys (a medium sized one, not super store, not local) has recently been refurbished and where there used to be about 8 tills (and generally 3 or 4 of them open) and about 12 self check-outs, the last time I went in there on a Sunday afternoon half the serviced tills with conveyors had gone - and not one of them was open - and the self check-outs increased to probably 20. All with the same small amount of space in front of them and the basket sized scanning area and packing area. So how the fuck are you supposed to do a trolley full of shopping in there now? What it means to me is that I will just go a bit further to Lidl. This isn't a small shop where people run in to get a few bits on their way home from work, it is a full sized city store.

Doratheexplorer1 · 04/11/2023 18:46

You actually can self scan at the food hall in Harrods and it’s as annoying as everywhere else 😂♥️

I'm glad we have machines that can do repetitive tasks.

The machine doing this repetitive task is the customer.

Possibly you might not feel the same if you were a person who now no longer has a job due to self checkouts

Itsnotchristmasyet · 04/11/2023 20:10

I’ve never heard of any supermarket checking receipts.
I’ve been using the self checkouts for years.

The only place I’ve ever had my receipts checked is trago mills in Cornwall.

Most machines give you the option of having a receipt or not and so I don’t know how it works if you have no receipt.
