You are heading towards almost exclusively self-checkout now.
The lady checking receipts at the exit was stopping
everyone.
I didn't choose to participate in that nonsense, I had already
filled my cart
emptied my cart
scanned the items
refilled my cart
and so I just skipped the exit line and left.
I heard her saying "umm - Excuse me " as I kept walking and raised the receipt above my head, leaving the store.
You can either trust me to do self-checkout, or you can put your cashiers back in place like it used to be.
I'm not interested in proving that I did your job for you.
• If you want me to be a cashier with no training then that's vour problem not mine.
• Keep employing young people and give them job opportunities.
YOU DON'T PAY ME TO SCAN MY OWN SHOPPING.
YOU DON'T GIVE ME STAFF DISCOUNT FOR WORKING FOR YOU.
Signed ....All of us
These are jobs that are needed to have for young and old

I’ve never heard of any supermarket checking receipts.
I’ve been using the self checkouts for years.

The only place I’ve ever had my receipts checked is trago mills in Cornwall.

Most machines give you the option of having a receipt or not and so I don’t know how it works if you have no receipt.

Expect it to come to a supermarket near you soon. As pp have said, in my Sainsbury's they have gates at the exit to the self scan tills and you have to scan your receipt to get out.

Standard in most mainland European supermarkets for last few years, no hardship, no drama, scan receipt and barrier opens and off you pop.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 04/11/2023 21:25

And everyone else in the supermarket stood up & clapped, didn't they, OP?

Possibly you might not feel the same if you were a person who now no longer has a job due to self checkouts

See my earlier post. No one is losing their job due to self checkouts. There are masses of other jobs to be done. We never have enough people to do them.

I was In Sainsbury’s the other day and right behind us a woman with her son (I assume) were pushing a fully loaded trolley. They got right near the exit and the wheels locked! They just left it right there and walked out sharpish. I didn’t see all of what was in the trolley but the one thing that stuck out to me was the big box of Lego with the security tag still attached. Presumably that had triggered something (maybe an RFID chip near the exit?) and the wheels had locked. I guess this is why they’re doing the checks.

Still bloody annoying for all the honest people out there though.

In Matalan recently I had to scan and remove my own tags from the clothes - couldn’t bloody get it to work and had to wait for assistance anyway. Put me off going back there.

I have a Matalan just down the road from me, if I actually go in I always have cash on me as those blasted unmanned tills are a pain in the backside. They never read my card and there is always a member of staff who has to come over and help.

The last time I went in, there were no takers for the self service tills, it was either refunds or cash at the one and only till open, whilst the unmanned till supervisor just stood there as the queue got longer until with about 10 people in the queue, they had to call a team member from out the back to open a till.

Drives me absolutely mad!

Well it is- because you don’t have check out staff anymore. Maybe your suspermarket didn’t hire enough but if there were tills there would be more jobs.

There still wouldn’t be enough people on checkouts as the checkout staff are always taken off to help in other areas and called over when needed (I work in a supermarket)

Paupersgrave · 05/11/2023 09:46

When I was a student I worked in a supermarket for years. We had people on the tills only, people who stacked shelves only, warehouse only and people who did a whole other host of jobs and generally we didn’t cross departments. I worked on tills and I’d see the same people come in for a chat. For some it was the only conversations they’d have with another human all day. I loved that part of the job and they loved coming in each day. The social element is important too.

Supermarkets of today may be short staffed but that is by design. Supermarkets are making a healthy profit right now, that isn’t being returned to shoppers it goes to shareholders. Prices going up isn’t the reason for fewer staff, dividends to shareholders is the reason.

And if this self service thing turns out like the Amazon supermarket and all shops are
doing it, where exactly do people work? When machines are doing the jobs, how do humans earn? Or is earning only for the shareholders and directors?

Not so long ago, supermarkets managed to have people on tills AND peop,e to sort out all the rest.
If there isn’t enough people NOW to do all that, ots because supermarkets are t employing enough people.

I mean let’s be honest. The reason for self checkout is to reduce staff number. Because its cheaper.

StoneWashJeansWithAMatchingJacket · 05/11/2023 10:39

Costco have been checking receipts since forever, it really is no big deal. shoplifting is on the rise in a massive way, everywhere. The receipt checking is going to prevent some of it. It’s not really because of self scan either- people come into my shop and fill up shopping bags and leave. Like every other retail outlet, we are chronically understaffed and stopping shoplifting and general antisocial behaviour from happening is a nightmare.

My Sainsburys has a machine which blocks your exit from the SC until you've scanned your receipt... so they've managed to get rid of the receipt checkers as well as the checkout staff.

Soon enough there'll be AI robots stacking shelves.

This made me sooo angry last week. Was in a hurry and only had a few items so used self-checkouts.

Firstly, had to call a supervisor over - turns out my bag was hanging over slightly so didn’t register.

Then got to the gate, and saw the sign about scanning the receipt. Couldn’t see where I had to scan the receipt (which I’d already thrown in my bag). Turns out I’d walked passed it.

Grrr. If I didn’t gave limited time, I would have used the cashier and queued. Actually, in retrospect, that may gave been quicker and I wouldn’t have left the shop cross.

I completely agree!

Yes that is what is known as a pushout. Nothing in that trolley would have been paid for, the wheel lock is one of the measures used to try and deal with the problem.
