‘XL Bully’ type dog attacked

Whentheboatcomein · 03/11/2023 22:38

My DH and our Ddog were walking tonight and it came running out of the dark, grabbed my dog by the back leg, and dragged him out of his harness and round the road. Thankfully my DH fought it off and lifted our DDog up over his head whilst shouting and neighbours came out to help.

DDog has puncture wounds but otherwise seems ok. DH is a bag of nerves.

A lady came out to inform us it is her sons dog, he found it abandoned and is keeping it in the garden and walking it at night as it “attacks other dogs” as she said.

thank god it wasn’t worse. Thank god my DH acted to lift our dog.

I don’t want this to be a bashing thread, I’m just so shaken and need to get it out.

here’s DDog for those who will ask :)

Have you taken him to the vet? Dog bites are highly likely to become infected. Glad you're all OK.

Whentheboatcomein · 03/11/2023 22:45

He’s going tomorrow to be checked over.

I love dogs, but personally I would report it to your local dog warden at your Council, so they are aware of this dog and can visit where this dog lives. Going for a small dog is bad enough, but this dog could easily go for a small child.

NormaLouiseBates · 03/11/2023 22:46

Hope he is okay and your H too. Must have been terrifying for him.

The other dog's owners sound thick as mince.

BreadandButterDinners · 03/11/2023 22:47

Your poor Ddog and DH!
A lady came out to inform us it is her sons dog, he found it abandoned and is keeping it in the garden and walking it at night as it “attacks other dogs” as she said. I wouldn't believe this, I'd say they are making excuses now to shift responsibility.
Did you get her number, or know where she lives?

trythisforsize · 03/11/2023 22:49

Please call the police before it kills someone

Hope you're all ok

Iheartpizza · 03/11/2023 22:49

Report!!

Oh great! Well, not great, as you shouldn't have to be taking him in the first place, of course.

I second the advice to report it, via the Police.

Whentheboatcomein · 03/11/2023 22:51

It’s been reported to the police and I’ve got the incident number. The police said because it didn’t bite my H they can’t do anything but give the owner “advice” about rehoming it to the dog warden.

We have their name and address as they only live up the road from us, never seen the dog before but makes sense if they’ve only been walking it late at night.

SinnerBoy · 03/11/2023 22:53

Oh, that sucks; the dog warden it is, then.

flufferknutter · 03/11/2023 22:57

I don't know why they aren't rounding these things up and euthanising them.

Attacks will continue to happen even after this ban (how can they be banned if people are still allowed to keep them?)

I'm sorry about your dog, he looks very cute. I hope he recovers soon.

nocoolnamesleft · 03/11/2023 22:59

Hope your dog recovers well. Bloody lucky the attacking dog didn't go for your husband to get at your dog.

foxlover47 · 03/11/2023 23:02

Must of been so scary , your dog is adorable I really
Hope he is ok 🤗

They're fobbing you off.

The law on out of control dogs states (from the gov UK website):

Your dog is considered dangerously out of control if it:

injures someone
makes someone worried that it might injure them
A court could also decide that your dog is dangerously out of control if either of the following apply:

it attacks someone’s animal
the owner of an animal thinks they could be injured if they tried to stop your dog attacking their animal

Push the issue with them and also contact the dog warden. The dog injured your dog and your DH was at risk of injury therefore it meets the definition of being dangerously out of control.

Whentheboatcomein · 03/11/2023 23:06

Thank you everyone for the well wishes and concern. Scruffs (our dog) is going the vets first thing tomorrow so I’ll update again after that. I don’t think anything is wrong past the bite marks. DH is having a bit of an adrenaline come down now and is a bit more shaken up. Hopefully all will feel a bit better after a nights sleep and a vet trip.

just counting my lucky stars it wasn’t a child and it wasn’t worse for DDog and my DH.

Whentheboatcomein · 03/11/2023 23:08

This is really helpful thank you, I did think it sounded a bit odd that it only mattered if it attacked my H. As otherwise we’d have dogs attacking other dogs left right and centre.

Is the dog warden separate to the police? They said a “beat” officer would call into them at some point to offer the owner advice

Soo so sorry OP! This is my worst nightmare. Hope your lovely dog has a speedy recovery.

I know you must be super shaken and it's late but I'd want to get DDog checked tonight to be on the safe side. Sometimes bites that don't look too bad on the outside can cause massive problems inside, especially if the dog attacking was a lot bigger and perhaps shook DDog? Presumably he will be in a fair bit of pain so will need pain relief/antibiotics.

Oh poor Scruffs, what a little cutie. I hope everything goes ok at the vets, hopefully just superficial wounds and maybe some antibiotics to be safe. Many cuddles for him tonight.

And bravo to your brave husband for saving him, I'm not sure I'd be bold enough to go toe to toe with an XL Bully so he deserves lots of cuddles too!

JFT · 03/11/2023 23:14

I used to be a dog owner and also walker.

I'm sorry to tell you this but now that dog has gone for your dog once, it will try every single time it sees your dog. So I don't know how you can ensure the two never cross paths?

I'm glad you've reported it to the police and sorry they fobbed you off. You can ask for the dog to be aggression tested as the owner says it goes for children and people too. It probably needs to be euthanised.

KenAdams · 03/11/2023 23:19

God I absolutely hate them. Hope your dog is OK.

WingingItSince1973 · 03/11/2023 23:21

Am so sorry this happened to your dog. Please keep close on him. My lovely Yorkie was attacked a year ago and we thought she was ok at first just superficial wounds but she had a really deep one on her belly area that for some reason we didn't see as bad and a few hours later it was clear she needed emergency vets. Sadly she was too poorly. I don't want to frighten you. Just please take care. Xxx

I’m glad you warned me of that, we are going to travel out of the area to walk him each day until we know the dog has gone. The owner has said it’s the final straw but I’m not leaving it to chance and I’ll be ringing the dog warden also.

I’m so so sorry it happened to your dog also and that they passed. How utterly heartbreaking for you. Xx

Definitely. I can’t believe how brave he was. He said it wasn’t being “brave” he just knew he had to act. Well he’s our hero tonight that’s for sure! If I could have Enrique here to sing it himself I would!
