‘XL Bully’ type dog attacked

Whentheboatcomein · 03/11/2023 22:38

My DH and our Ddog were walking tonight and it came running out of the dark, grabbed my dog by the back leg, and dragged him out of his harness and round the road. Thankfully my DH fought it off and lifted our DDog up over his head whilst shouting and neighbours came out to help.

DDog has puncture wounds but otherwise seems ok. DH is a bag of nerves.

A lady came out to inform us it is her sons dog, he found it abandoned and is keeping it in the garden and walking it at night as it “attacks other dogs” as she said.

thank god it wasn’t worse. Thank god my DH acted to lift our dog.

I don’t want this to be a bashing thread, I’m just so shaken and need to get it out.

here’s DDog for those who will ask :)

I live in Scotland and apparently people are 'rescuing' XL Bullies by sending them over the border. It's terrifying.

Why have you resurrected a thread from last year? XL bullies are now not allowed out in public without a muzzle or off lead.

I noticed a few old dog attack threads had been posted on in the dog house, I’m pretty it’s the same poster.

These posts chill my blood , I live in fear of coming across one of these dogs whilst out with my own thankfully I haven’t seen any in the area I live , but it has stopped me going to certain further afield locations where I’d have gone in the past.
I’ve seen so many ‘rehoming/rescue’ posts on social media of people taking these dogs in for the past couple of weeks , photos of them cuddled up to babies and toddlers and lots of ‘well done hun, our Xxx wouldn’t hurt a fly’ . Terrifies me.
My mum told me about a house not far from her where the owners have 8 XLB but only one can be walked as the others are too aggressive . I’ve seen the one that is ‘ok’ and it is horrendous , barking ,snapping and straining at the lead.

Me too. These dangerous animals are being rounded up and sent to Scotland for rehoming by idiots and for idiots…

pandosadick · 07/01/2024 22:04

And incase we all get into arguments etc.. the OP's dog was dragged away by an XL Bully. They are dangerous

SomeCatFromJapan · 07/01/2024 22:50

Not in Scotland unfortunately.

flashmcdoodle · 07/01/2024 22:52

I've been adding to this thread sporadically too and will continue to do so with any new updates

MacLaine · 07/01/2024 22:53

Honestly when are these creatures just going to be culled?!

They’re coming up here in droves… I really don’t understand why tbh, buy a muzzle, keep them on a lead, register them and get them castrated, it’s not difficult. I’m sick to the back teeth of seeing these things “rescued” from England to Scotland without home checks being done. Some of the people transporting them are being hailed as hero’s on social media. Only today there was a news article of one being rehomed and killed. It would be kinder to put them to sleep if owners can’t afford to keep them under the new restrictions in England rather than them to fall into the wrong hands. Also, many of the dogs being brought up here already have bite histories.

Man targeted by vigilantes after dead XL Bully dumped outside his Glasgow flat

The dog is thought to have been rehomed from England at a time when hundreds of people were trying to move their dogs to Scotland ahead of a ban.

Feel free to campaign for a change in the law. But all that will happen is that the problem owners will move onto a new breed. Cane Corsos look like they may be the next XL bully. It’s not the dogs that are the problem here.

SomeCatFromJapan · 07/01/2024 23:30

@BellaAndDave what a bizarre incident. I can't work out from the description if it was the new owner or the vigilantes that were meant to have killed the dog?

I disagree. My lab was ripped to bits by one and I witnessed my assistance dog slowly losing life second by second as that ‘thing’ attacked my dog. He was my life and made my life so much more bearable. I will never be sorry for saying this but they all should be destroyed. Unless you’ve witnessed one of these things attack you really have no idea of how happy it makes them. They are NOT a breed, they are no more than crossbreeds, bred for power. I will continue to campaign for a change in the law in Scotland to have these things banned. Unfortunately the Scottish government are stupid and scared of agreeing with England. I’d like to see evidence of deaths caused by Cane Corsos or other breeds if you can supply them. Have you any idea of the amount of these things that have been moved to Scotland? Most of them have bite histories and are being rehomed with anyone?

Wolfiefan · 08/01/2024 07:38

I am very very sorry for your loss. Came Corsos aren’t yet a problem as XL bullies are only just banned. “These dogs” aren’t a breed. So the government are saying that dogs with a certain measurement are dangerous. That’s mad.
We need proper regulation of dog breeding and ownership. Only that will sort this once and for all.

In which case Cane Corsos can join the others on the banned list. And so on.

SomeCatFromJapan · 09/01/2024 10:21

I saw someone on X whingeing that they have to muzzle their Cane Corso/Boerboel cross because it looks like an XL Bully. I can't think of a better candidate for muzzling than a backyard cross of those two breeds quite frankly.

50plusandfabulous · 09/01/2024 13:42

Never heard of the boerbel but a quick google sees that they are bred for guard dogs and already banned in a number of countries. Why on earth do people have these dogs and then cross them?

Wolfiefan · 09/01/2024 15:35

And then these people move onto the next breed. But not until people and animals have suffered. The only way to stop this is to control breeding and owning of dogs.
(I have dogs BTW.)

SomeCatFromJapan · 09/01/2024 15:53

@50plusandfabulous I don't know much about Cane Corsos but there have been a few human fatalities over the years from Boerboels in their country of origin South Africa (although that is massively surpassed by fatal pit bull attacks, despite Boerboels being significantly larger and stronger, weighing up to 90kg).

I certainly think the DDA could have gone further from the start so more greatly limiting the number of people and animals killed and savaged by large, powerful dogs. A further revision should look ahead more and place restrictions on quite a few types of dog.

How effective do you think controls on breeding would be? If they’re not 100% effective people will say the controls don’t work and should be scrapped. And it would be far harder to police and very expensive. I doubt the tax payer would be very warm towards a scheme that cost a lot, for the benefit of dog owners when bans would do.

Restrictions on owning dogs, or at least owning dogs without conditions, is already inherent in the DDA, other legislation and the courts’ powers, surely.

SomeCatFromJapan · 09/01/2024 17:15

I agree, it should probably extend to any large, powerful breed that has strong guarding instinct or game tendencies - perhaps looking at a combination of size, weight, build and breed characteristics as I doubt that Irish Wolfhounds or Great Danes are going to pose a risk to anyone.

Wolfiefan · 09/01/2024 17:19

You can’t ban dogs based on size though. Irish Wolfhounds (like mine) are the biggest and you say they’re not an issue. Councils could restrict breeders. Ban Pets4homes etc. Make owners do training and have a (paid for) licence.

A basic ban by size with exemptions would seem possible though wouldn’t it? Wolfhounds could be exempt, for example, and there might be some smaller dogs that might need including in a ban.

Or a size-based ban could be coupled with a ban on all bull breeds, mastiffs, and crosses, and some others.

I see there’s been a court case today about a woman (not the owner) badly mauled by a ‘boxweiler’. When are we going to stop these attacks properly?

Not so mad...multiple countries including Spain have restrictions on dogs based on weight, height and body type...non breed specific

GUARANTEED DOG ATTACK ADVICE.
If a dog ever attacks your dog, grab it's collar, not your dog (even if it's in the other dogs mouth. Grab the collar, get both hands inside the collar and PULL with ALL YOUR BODYWEIGHT and keep pulling hard.
A dog that can't BREATHE can't bite.
This is the QUICKEST, most effective least destructive way to gey a dog off a human or a dog.
Don't:
*PULL your dog.- It will cause more tissue damage
*PULL it's tail - It will bit harder
*BEAT the other dog - make the dog bite HARDER causing more damage
*SHOUT commands -
*LIFT your dog up - you risk getting bitten

CHOCKING a dog out with its COLLAR or a LEAD. Put lead around the attacker, put the CLIP THROUGH the HANDLE LOOP forming a NOOSE and pull with all your might.

When the dog tries to take a breath it HAS to LET GO of what it is biting. HOLD the CHOCK for a few more seconds, before trying to get to safety as soon as possible. Don't hang around.

This advice can SAVE a LIFE. 🧡
