What were you scared of as a kid that wasn't meant to be scary?

For me it was Dastardly and Muttley. I have no idea why but I was terrified of them and if I woke up in the night to use the bathroom I used to run because I thought they were hiding in my attic and would snatch me and pull me up.

It's just funny looking back because they're not even scary characters and not meant to be😂

Wellephant, that stupid red elephant thing that the fire service used to teach primary kids about not burning to death.

The public safety videos at school. In particular, the pylon one and the traintracks one.

Jimmy Saville.

Michael Barrymore.

Yes to public safety videos at school. I was petrified (rightly so) of level crossings for ages because of one of those.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 05/11/2023 21:58

Very large plants. I thought they would eat me, like the Venus flytrap, which I'd seen on a programme.

Margarita45 · 05/11/2023 22:23

Mr Blobby and literally anything from spitting images

Caswallonthefox · 05/11/2023 22:41

My oldest ds was petrified of shrek. Just the first one. No idea why.

Oxoqb · 05/11/2023 22:58

Hamble from Playschool was really creepy and I used to have nightmares about Tiny Tim (Tip Toe Through the Tulips).

Positivelypatient · 05/11/2023 23:15

There was an advert in the 70s, for milk, Watch Out Theres a Humphrey About. It was these stripey red and white straws that would come through keyholes etc to try and steal your milk.
Terrified the living daylights out of me. I'd hide behind the sofa when that ad came on!

Oh and I was allowed to watch The Blob. It was, I suppose a horror film of sorts, i was so scared after it I slept under my covers and remember dripping in sweat it was so hot but i darent come out. 😅

SuitYouSir · 05/11/2023 23:17

I was terrified of gunge, people being gunged on Noel’s house party, Fun House, etc, it made me feel sick.

CharlotteFlax · 05/11/2023 23:37

That giant yellow creep, Big Bird. Terrifying!

tobee · 05/11/2023 23:59

The Goodies.

Love them now though. 😃

Margarita45 · 06/11/2023 07:37

Also Hoggle from Labyrinth

Silene · 06/11/2023 08:10

Upright hoovers, thought they'd hoover me up, we had a pull along at home, and I loved it., the water running out of the bath, thought I'd go down the plughole...there was a song about it...terrified me, flushing toilets, dentists!

Pr1mr0se · 06/11/2023 08:25

The bloke in the white mask with a long nose that used to chase people around a field on a children's tv programme. I have a mental image of benny hill music but I don't think that was the sort of programme I would have been allowed to watch as a four year old.

The darleks from Dr Who...."we will exterminate you". I think I took it personally and hit behind the sofa. It didn't stop me watching it every week though.

Fireworks. We used to go out and fireworks night was a really big event and seemed to last forever....but I hated it. Too much noise and I was really really tired I suppose.

Pr1mr0se · 06/11/2023 08:26

CharlotteFlax - oh yes big bird creeped me out too.

Pr1mr0se · 06/11/2023 08:29

ChishiyaBat - Zelda is a whole new level of creepiness. Nightmare territory definitely for a kid. Not sure it's that nice for adults either.

There was a BBC adaptation of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe around when I was young. It was really 90's - people dressed up in beaver costumes, very little CGI and Aslan the lion very robotic. But the wolf character (who again, was very clearly a man in a wolf costume) terrified me especially when he growled. Please tell me someone else has seen this 😂

I have it on DVD and the kids love it- we watch every December! If you saw Maugrim the wolf growl now you'd laugh.... he sort of goes "rrrruff!"

ThelmaBorden · 06/11/2023 08:52

Clowns

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/11/2023 09:05

The Toby Jug in my GM’s hall. Its horrible sinister face was always looking evilly at me when I was coming downstairs. 😩

ThelmaBorden · 06/11/2023 08:52

Clowns

Those too. Creepy as hell.

Towwanthustice · 06/11/2023 11:39

God everything...
Big tractors
The daleks off DR Who
The little lady down the road who would appear out of her window when we went passed.

Azurebird · 06/11/2023 13:31

Had nightmares about Grotbags, also was really scared one of my Grans was Grotbags in disguise...... says quite alot about my Gran.

chuffachuffchuff · 06/11/2023 13:40

The wind.

There was something deeply disturbing about the condition of Hartley Hare. A hare so motheaten and disheveled must have been through some kind of major trauma in his youth.

Especially in the episode where he appeared to be enjoying a very special relationship with a glove puppet. No wonder so many 70s kids grew up warped. 😂

@EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon the Yorkshire TV ident scared the heck out of me! I used to dive on the floor, it was terrifying.. I was scared the big Y would appear from behind the sofa!

Nice username by the way

Thanks! I was listening to Boards of Canada and got the sudden urge to NC 😄

You've just reminded me that the Y actually did take off and fly at the beginning of 3-2-1...

And as a pp said, the ATV ident was pretty scary too. (What was it about idents? 😄)

I spend way too much time thinking about this kind of stuff. 😂

Nearly forgot, but back in the 70s the entry barriers to Tube stations used to have these huge brown or grey cushion type things (rather than the opening and closing plastic flaps that came later) on each side of the gate. Something about the way they opened and shut would creep me out. I used to prefer the manned gate.

Maugrim didn't scare me, but the beavers! They were terrifying! I much prefer Dawn French as Mrs Beaver in the film adaptation.
