What were you scared of as a kid that wasn't meant to be scary?

For me it was Dastardly and Muttley. I have no idea why but I was terrified of them and if I woke up in the night to use the bathroom I used to run because I thought they were hiding in my attic and would snatch me and pull me up.

It's just funny looking back because they're not even scary characters and not meant to be😂

Oh, and the Donovan song ‘Hurdy Gurdy Man’ who I imagined to be some kind of monster.

Marching Jazz troupes.

Evil Edna! I remember letting my daughter watch a DVD of it and the episode where Evil Edna said she would break everyone's TVs came on and then the screens black out and my daughter screamed the house down ! 🤣

The soda stream advert that ended with ‘get busy with the fizzy.’

I used to hide behind the sofa.

I was terrified of spiders as a child, I was holding my baby brother when I was 7 years old and a spider was crawling on his face I was so scared that I dropped him, luckily he fell on a cushion that happened to be on the floor so he fine.

I was also scared to got to the bathroom when I woke up at night. I'm Jewish and so at some point I was scared of Nazis hiding under my bed and they would catch me. Other times it was foxes or crocodiles or other things hiding under my bed. After reading Harry Potter it was dementors.

Phil Collins
A laughing clown in a box by the pier my grandad used to take me to when I was little
Also used to think that Great Uncle Bulgaria from the Wombles lived in the toilet cistern and was going to get me if I sat down on the loo
The Clangers, creepy whistling voices

Siawouldwannabeya · 05/11/2023 15:29

‘The Mash’ song , creepy as hell! I used to have to leave the room.
same as other posters - Crystal tips and Alistair, the attic and Worzel Gummidge 😟

Siawouldwannabeya · 05/11/2023 15:32

Wellephant, that stupid red elephant thing that the fire service used to teach primary kids about not burning to death.

The public safety videos at school. In particular, the pylon one and the traintracks one.

Jimmy Saville.

Michael Barrymore.

Hide-behind-the-sofa level fears:
(a) Sooty & Sweep (so violent!)
(b) The dragon that trapped our heroes in a cave in an episode of Fireball XL5
(c) Daleks
(d) Mysterons

Lisbon2013 · 05/11/2023 17:55

I mentioned Crystal Tips yesterday as I had a big hair day!

HideousKinky · 05/11/2023 17:58

An East German film called "The Singing Ringing Tree" which appeared on TV in the 1960s absolutely terrified a whole generation of children, including me!

Anyone else remember it?

HideousKinky · 05/11/2023 18:18

I see a few people have indeed mentioned it already!

ClassicStripe · 05/11/2023 18:46

Guy Fawkes and Hitler. That they would take particular umbridge with me and haunted me

ChishiyaBat · 05/11/2023 20:27

Apparently Zelda from Terrahawks used to freak me out according to my Mam, I don't remember though.
My older cousin babysat me when I was 7 or 8 and she made me watch A Nightmare on Elm Street, she held my hands so I couldn't cover my eyes and I had nightmares about Freddy for years, until I was 15 and then I watched it again and i've absolutely loved it ever since.

GenZer · 05/11/2023 20:30

Early 2000s baby. I hated the CBeebies pink and green ‘Night Night’ screens that would show after the bedtime hour. I was terrified of them. Weirdly I was talking with a couple of friends same age who also hated it as a kid. Something about it, clearly!

Any error messages or technology going wrong.

minihoy · 05/11/2023 07:18

Noel Edmonds.

Have no idea why yet whenever he appeared on telly I would shout “No Lemons! No Lemons!” and run behind the sofa. 😂😂😂

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me Grin

Jumanji!
It was the film that was out when I reached the age where sleepovers were a thing. It terrified me so much as a kid I can’t even bring myself to watch it as an adult

ilovepixie · 05/11/2023 21:49

The bit on trains that join the carriages together. Was terrified they would come apart when I was walking over them!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 05/11/2023 21:55

Ahhh I’ve just thought of something, it wasn’t really scary but lines between/around paving stones, me and DB seriously believed at one point that bears lived in them/below them, until we realised it wasn’t true but still played along.

Never seen it, bored today and watched a preview. I concur, it looks creepy.
