What were you scared of as a kid that wasn't meant to be scary?

For me it was Dastardly and Muttley. I have no idea why but I was terrified of them and if I woke up in the night to use the bathroom I used to run because I thought they were hiding in my attic and would snatch me and pull me up.

It's just funny looking back because they're not even scary characters and not meant to be😂

Mine was the BBC children's programme Carrie's War.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 04/11/2023 01:09

JCBs. Big, rumbly yellow fuckers.

RelativePitch · 04/11/2023 01:38

Mosaics in the centre of swimming pools. Thought a shark was just lying in wait.

ALongHardWinter · 04/11/2023 03:19

Zebedee on The Magic Roundabout used to scare me. I think it was his moustache that upset me.

DeanElderberry · 04/11/2023 10:29

Mrs Tiggywinkle. One the worst nightmares of my life was after seeing the film of the Ashton ballet of the Tales of Beatrix Potter. I still shudder a bit when I see the little book.

I also had a dressing gown that hung on the back of my bedroom door and turned into a werewolf at night, but I think it was quite reasonable to be scared of that.

Redkatagain · 04/11/2023 10:44

Road sweeper machines.

I was told when very small that they were wicked witch machines and I thought they were full of hoovered up witches-

minihoy · 05/11/2023 07:18

Noel Edmonds.

Have no idea why yet whenever he appeared on telly I would shout “No Lemons! No Lemons!” and run behind the sofa. 😂😂😂

Slightly off-topic in both cases but our cat is scared of her own poo - she’s very young and will use her litter tray, bury it for about ten minutes and then rocket around the house with her tail fluffed up! I’m not surprised though as it’s so smelly I threw up cleaning her out yesterday.
Also a random thing I was NOT scared of as a child - I’m extremely sensitive even now and can’t cope with people crying, being hit, jump scares, or anything that looks painful really on television (I even cringe at the corpses on forensic police dramas imagining how it must have felt). However, my family is really into Sweeney Todd and I saw a full-staged version at the age of ten. For some reason that means throat-cutting is one of the only kinds of violence I can stomach really calmly and I’m managing to watch most of Hannibal with my boyfriend in a fairly chilled way.

The Goodies! No idea why. Think there was an episode about the end of the world or something and I was too young to realise it was comedy.

It might have been this episode https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_End_(The_Goodies)

bluetongue · 05/11/2023 08:12

There’s this Goodies episode too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthanasia

Looking at the episode descriptions some them do seem to have some fairly adult themes.

My son was scared of a part of Teletubbies - specifically the cut out of a bear on a skateboard that used to chase the cutout of a lion.

ET, but I still stand with that one. For some reason I had an ET piggy bank on my window ledge and was TERRIFIED of it.

I also had to draw a picture of Elizabeth I at school, and DM was so proud of it she stuck it up on my bedroom wall. I was so scared she was going to come to life! One day I plucked up all my courage and pulled it down, my heart was absolutely hammering. Still hate things looking at me.

I was terrified of ET as well.

Also, The Teddy Bears Picnic Song - the tune is so sinister - and Mr Soft from the soft mints(?) advert.

Have totally outed myself to my mother if she's on here!

Jdlll · 05/11/2023 09:08

I remember being upset about the song 'I saw muma kissing Santa"

newrubylane · 05/11/2023 09:13

Oh, and how has no one mentioned the witches from the TV version of The Witches??? Terrifying!

Goatymum · 05/11/2023 09:18

Beards!
idk why but my mum told me I’d hide when my older bearded cousin would visit. I still don’t like a beard on a man - when ds grows his I’m always relieved when he shaves it off again.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 05/11/2023 09:19

@CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau I think the cat rocketing around the house thing after a poo is quite common. Me and my friend were just discussing it the other day as both ours do it. My friend describes hers as doing crazy laps around the house like she's spooked. I wonder if it's just an exhilarating but weird feeling for them after emptying their bowels.

Weird conversation for a Sunday morning 😆

I think post-poo zoomies is a thing. My not-young cat does it too!!

One of my relatives created this!! No one remembers it now. So rarely get the chance to say that!!

I loved Crystal Tips and Alastair.

I was scared of The Singing Ringing Tree and Tomorrow's People 😬

ilovepixie · 05/11/2023 09:34

I was terrified of quick sand! I’ve never been near quick sand ever in my life but was still terrified of it!

AnneTwacky · 05/11/2023 09:37

That fella on Sesame Street that painted numbers everywhere.

In particular the one where he painted a number 10 on a stool and someone sat down on it. I can still remember the abject horror when they stood up and had a perfectly printed 10 on their bum.

riceuten · 05/11/2023 10:28

Those road cleaning trucks that brushed the leaves and sucked them up. I once dreamed they ran my sister over and she was mostly made of milk :-((((( I would hide behind my mum’s legs if we saw one.

OceanicBoundlessness · 05/11/2023 10:28

Father Christmas coming into my bedroom to fill a stocking, and the idea that he was watching my every move.
Creepy.
