What’s worth getting? Especially as part of a general shop

OP posts:
ThreeRingCircus · 01/11/2023 10:32

Mainly just general stuff, I've always been happy with the quality of everything but things that I always pick up if they're there as they're really good are:

Really nutty granola in the brown box

Jalapeno chilli jam....red jar with a black lid

Spicy bean burgers from the freezer section

Lobster and crayfish macaroni cheese from the freezer section

The Yankee candle dupe jar candles

Florentines at Christmas

ThreeRingCircus · 01/11/2023 10:33

Oh and the butter with sea salt crystals!

CanIPetThatDawg · 01/11/2023 10:34

Garlic bread crisps

Beaverbridge · 01/11/2023 10:34

Chicken tenders. OH loves them. Bleach. Candles, washing powder.

Showmethemoneyyy · 01/11/2023 10:40

The specially selected orange juice (with bits), ridged crisps, caramelised onion quiche are all great

GigiAnnna · 01/11/2023 10:44

I do my main shop there. I particularly like the coconut laundry liquid. It's the only non branded laundry product I have found that is any good and leaves the clothes with a noticeable scent. The kids and husband love the " Biscoff" cereal too.

RustyBear · 01/11/2023 10:46

Nappies (for my granddaughter) DD says they are the best she's found, but it’s easier for me to get to Aldi, so I buy them for her.

Zimunya · 01/11/2023 10:47

Nothing. Our local Aldi is a hell-hole, disorganised and shambolic, and filled with screaming children and yelling parents. I know it's cheaper, but Morrisons is not significantly more expensive, and at least I can find what I need there without worrying about witnessing domestic abuse in the midst of the grocery shopping.

SM4713 · 01/11/2023 10:50

I agree with lots of @ThreeRingCircus suggestions too!

Unlike lidl, our aldi doesn't have a bakery, so I find their bread isn't great. It often feels stale even when its well within date. Fruit/veg can also be hit and miss. Best used that day, otherwise they seem to go off quickly.

Was that some kind of dig at lower classes using cheaper shops? I've got 3 Aldis relatively close to me and I've never witnessed this.

Backinthedress · 01/11/2023 10:55

I second the Florentines - yummy!

The flavoured and chocolate rice cakes are also very good. The packs of fresh veg ready to roast are delicious (and easy) and their cinnamon iced buns are better than Lidl's.

Oldthyme · 01/11/2023 10:58

I buy everything/as much as possible as I don’t like being ripped off by other big 4 supermarkets. I also resent the club card pricing criteria. I’m into Aldi, buy British, pay my bill and go. No technology and no stupid loyalty cards gathering my data.

I like the ridged crisps.
Basa fish filets fresh of smoked.
Sausages (best ones not their cheapest)
Thick cut bacon
Steak ( never had a bad one from any of them, rump, sirloin etc)
Fruit trifles with a real raspberry or strawberry in the bottom.
Butter chicken ready meal from chiller.
Nordpak spread. Slightly salted.
Ancient grains sliced bread.

The list is endless.

* I have heard that they buy M&S ready meal recipes when M&S upgrade the dish (“New improved recipe”) so their ready meals are usually a good quality. *

Their Greek yogurt is excellent, really thick. They have good regional British cheese , and the European cheeses are quite competitive, they sometimes have some odd and interesting ones like aged manchego. Parma ham in packs.

Dried fruit and nuts are the best around and not expensive. All butter croissants ( not always in stock), deli jars of peppers and sun dried tomatoes, tins of anchovies unbelievably cheap and good ( many of them in the garage now!)

But we tend to use them as a top up .Meat and fish come from the butchers and fishmongers, some fruit & veg from greengrocers ( soon to close, thank you Network Rail and Oxford council for effectively closing the road so they can’t stay open). Their veg doesn’t last as long as Tesco, and they have a limited range.

UdderlyPumpkin · 01/11/2023 11:00

Part baked dinner rolls are incredible

trying29 · 01/11/2023 11:01

Their brioche burger buns and in fact anything brioche is better than any other you can buy including expensive Waitrose brands. Their jo malone dupes are great. Their mars ice cream dupes are excellent.
Also look at the wine which is often highly recommended

trying29 · 01/11/2023 11:04

i also second what everyone else has recommended. their european cheeses are so good! gruyere/comte and the specially selected mozzarella is delicious

caringcarer · 01/11/2023 11:11

Tinned food like chopped tomatoes and baked beans, washing powder, kitchen spray, bathroom spray, tin foil, greaseproof paper, fresh and dried herbs, garlic paste, tomato puree, minced steak, pizzas, bread.

I didn't grow up in the UK so am totally clueless about the class system. My limited understanding of class is that it's not connected to money, though, so I don't see the connection. It would be foolish of me to have a dig at anyone for shopping there when I've clearly been there myself on more than a few occasions. I'm happy for you that your experience of shopping at Aldi has been a good one. But it's not beyond the realms of possibility that shops (and indeed, shoppers) are not all generic, and that local shops and shopper experiences will differ across the UK.

Figment1982 · 01/11/2023 11:16

Their steak - I will not buy steak anywhere else now.

In particular, the Wagyu fillet steak.. superb.

Tryingtokeepcalmandcarryon · 01/11/2023 11:21

So many recommendations here that I haven’t tried yet! Always seems a mission just getting all the basics haha. Some faves are

  • chocolate cereal granola (light and white choc), hide it from the children
  • Posh chocolate (salted caramel etc)
  • Non-bio liquid
  • Cheap Fromage Frais
  • Bakery treats (wrapped Pain Au Chocolate etc)
  • Thai Fishcakes (not frozen)
  • Alcohol!
  • Frozen pizza and wedges

@Zimunya but this was a thread about what to buy from Aldi not your experience of Aldi. We are Aldi shoppers on this thread. We clearly love it and then someone comes along and declares it not only shit but a place of domestic violence. How did you think your post would come across apart from judgemental of those that shop there?

I love my local Aldi, I regularly buy tiger rolls, their part baked dinner rolls/seeded rolls, their "nordpak" butter, brie, smoothies, condiments like dijon and wholegrain mustard and their piccalili. Green lentils, black beans and tinned potatoes. And their orange washing up liquid which beat Fairy in tests. I agree with @Figment1982 their steak is delicious. This is making me very hungry Grin

SM4713 · 01/11/2023 11:36

Their lunex tampons and pantyliners are good and much cheaper than the branded versions
Another vote for their florentines and general Christmas foods like stollen, medjool dates, cakes and a Christmas biscuits 😋

More than once, I've been instore in January, and all the Christmassy stock is on sale at ridiculous prices. 9p a pack of biscuits, 11p a pack of Christmas shaped crisps etc, so keep and eye out for bargains! From memory- the price label is all red, instead of white, to show its a discount.

AuntieMarys · 01/11/2023 11:36

Their jams are excellent

I was merely answering the thread question "What do you buy from Aldi?" Nothing is the short answer, which I gave, and then provided some follow up information as to why. At no time did I say they were all awful - I was only giving my personal experience of our local Aldi. I'm genuinely pleased that so many of you have had (and continue to have) positive experiences there.

100-per-cent-peanut peanut butter.
