The Enfield poltergeist

I’ve just been reading this (probably not the best timing as I’m about to go to bed 😳) I can’t believe something like this could happen, but there do seem to have been a number of witnesses! What do you all make of it?

Enfield Poltergeist child reveals TERRIFYING ordeal

Among the pre-war homes lining Green Street in Enfield, there is little to distinguish number 284. It was once the centre of one of the most baffling ghost stories.

Doesn’t even the photographer say the girl just jumped off the bed?

Watch the latest tv show on Apple TV, using the original recordings from the house, and I think by the end it is clear what happened. Really sad tbh.

OldBilge · 30/10/2023 06:42

Two young girls with a lot going on in their lives, much of it difficult, who were bullied at school, wanted attention, got it, and felt under increasing pressure to produce ‘results’ for the various investigators? Yeah, totally woo.

Iheartwhitetshirts · 30/10/2023 06:44

Exactly this. Sad all round really.

megletthesecond · 30/10/2023 07:07

She's jumping.

marmiteandminticecream · 30/10/2023 07:35

wasn't the police there and witnessed chairs moving around or was that made up

henrysugar12 · 30/10/2023 07:39

An acquaintance visited the house and said that it was really scary there. However, from watching various documentaries and reading loads about the case I'm doubtful much of it was real. The girls admitted that they faked some of it (although, I can't find the documentary that this was in, but I remember it!).
The photos of Janet "levitating" are clearly her jumping, you can see by the position of her body.

I suppose, as I grew up nearby it was always something that interested me.

bruffin · 30/10/2023 07:49

I went to school next to their road at the time, i think i was probably a year or so older than the oldest girl. They either went to my school or the CofE secondary school over the road , but i dont remember any gossip at the time at all and despite no internet or mobile phones gossip spread quickly. It was only years later i heard about it.

MadeOfAllWork · 30/10/2023 07:56

You had two very troubled girls and the investigator saw is recently departed daughter in them.
You just have a lot of people wanting it to be true.

markusdam · 30/10/2023 07:58

Did they !

my friends kids went to the primary school over the road from the house and I felt so sorry for the people who have gone on to live in that house!!!

bruffin · 30/10/2023 08:01

It was also around the era The Exorcist and then The Omen came out. They would not have been old enough to see either film , but the films were huge at the time and every body knew about them , i suspect that had a big influence on their activities

AfraidToRun · 30/10/2023 08:08

Team Sceptic here

Oganesson118 · 30/10/2023 08:14

I haven’t read much into it but if it was fake I would thank them because it was the basis of a film I absolutely love!

bellac11 · 30/10/2023 08:15

She is jumping off the bed, you can see it with your own eyes in the picture

Its a well known fake situation, Im not sure how people dont know this?

I was recently re-reading The Ghost of Thomas Kempe (a very popular children's book in the 70s) and remember thinking, 'I bet the Enfield Polt girls read this.' It would have been in the school library, even if they didn't read it in class.

Whilst I agree she most likely is jumping, the photo is one of a rapid sequence of photos. She appears to go from lying down to mid-air in something like 0.5 seconds.

Balloonhearts · 30/10/2023 09:24

What I've never understood about that picture is how she did it. Because in the picture, the duvet is relatively smooth. How did she jump off the bed without leaving wrinkles and indents where she stood?

And yes the sequence does show her going from lying down to midair very quickly. It must have been really difficult to pull off, how on earth did she manage it?

Cumberbiatch · 30/10/2023 09:28

Watch The Uncanny on iplayer now, there's an interesting interview with the photographer.

What does the photographer say? Did he believe it?
I can’t listen to the Uncanny podcast. Tried once and freaked out! 😂

Screwballs · 30/10/2023 09:33

The kids admitted it was rubbish years later. No such thing as ghosts.

sarahh96 · 30/10/2023 09:39

Wasn't The Conjuring based on their story? I seem to remember the girls were bought in as advisors for the film.
I love to believe it was true but I'm very skeptical. There were a lot of supernatural films around at the time, Amityville Horror etc so that could have had some bearing on it. Also, the mother continued to live in the house for decades and the girls moved back in at various stages of their lives. Wouldn't you run for the hills??

Gall10 · 30/10/2023 09:47

theres previously been numerous programmes & articles about poltergeists/haunting/ghosts…..but since the advent of most of the population having smart phones & ability to record video almost instantly these tales have decreased immensely…funny that!
