The Enfield poltergeist

I’ve just been reading this (probably not the best timing as I’m about to go to bed 😳) I can’t believe something like this could happen, but there do seem to have been a number of witnesses! What do you all make of it?

Enfield Poltergeist child reveals TERRIFYING ordeal

Among the pre-war homes lining Green Street in Enfield, there is little to distinguish number 284. It was once the centre of one of the most baffling ghost stories.

I’m on the fence, but I’m more so believing it than not.

but I love spooky things and I probably believe it for the wrong reasons!

I listened to the Battersea Poltergeist podcast and was trying to find the interview with the Fleet Street photographer which I believed was for that case. Actually I think they discussed the Enfield case within that podcast as a point of comparison. The photographer for Enfield was interviewed and did not at any point raise any concerns about things being faked. He said objects were flying around and I believe he said he was hit in the head by some Lego. My feelings were that he was pretty skeptical “non woo” professional sent on an assignment that he had no special interest in. I came across an interview on You Tube with him for something else and he repeated the same thing. Perhaps he likes the notoriety I don’t know but he didn’t seem like the dramatic sort. The Battersea Case had some interesting witness testimony including a woman who was a young journalist who stayed in the house with her boyfriend at the time who was a police officer.

TaaLaa · 30/10/2023 17:18

The photographer was on uncanny (TV prog, not podcast) saying it was all genuine.

I'm a member of one of the uncanny fb groups. Another member has posted a newspaper cutting of an interview with the photographer where he says its all faked.

So God knows what he thinks.

It’s worth noting that (I think, I’m recalling this from memory) that Maurice had a daughter by the same name as one of the girls. She had died as a child and it’s thought that this played a part in his fascination with the case and him wanting to help the girls.

Well, suppose I have to do this as I’m talking about a current TV show - SPOILERS FOLLOW…

As it uses not just their own words, but their actual voice recordings, it’s quite apparent how vulnerable they were and how things that had happened in their family life may have shaped them. It’s easy to understand why they craved the attention - not necessarily of the media btw - in fact I’m not sure they wanted that at all - but just of someone willing to listen to them and care about them. There girls also appear as adults, now, and it’s obvious that one of them at least is still extremely fragile. It’s also totally understandable why Maurice Grosse became so entangled and believed everything they said and wanted to protect them, once you hear his background story. The younger girl, as an adult, recollects how Mr Grosse (as she still refers to him) cared about them and still came to see they were all ok long after everything was over. Also, just to note, contrary to other comments saying the girls admitted they had made it all up - that certainly isn’t what they said then and it isn’t what they are saying now as adults either. Though they don’t really ever clearly state what their explanation for everything was.

What is the TV show you're talking about here?

The blueprint for the best piece pf TV from my childhood GhostWatch

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 30/10/2023 18:29

It’s in Danny Robins book into the uncanny.
I’ve stopped reading as too scary for me!

Where in Enfield is the house? I go to Enfield quite regularly.

Green Street, Brimsdown area of Enfield not the Town.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 30/10/2023 18:42

Ahh thank you

Oakbeam · 30/10/2023 18:45

Doesn’t even the photographer say the girl just jumped off the bed?

No, he said she couldn’t have. That photo was part of a sequence taken at 0.17 second intervals. In the preceding photo in the sequence, she is lying down in bed.

I just binge watched the new Apple TV series.

You're right he had a daughter named Janet. She died in a car accident if I'm not mistaken.

Oakbeam · 30/10/2023 20:43

It was a motorbike accident.

What strikes me about the pictures are how thin the family are, especially the kids, it's sad.

Youvebeenfed · 30/10/2023 21:27

Ghost watch completely shit me up.
Id not long bought my first house, was just 18 years old and sat down to watch TV, not knowing the program was fake. I switched it off once it started getting crazy so didn’t know at all that it wasn’t true.
I was absolutely terrified for weeks afterwards, really shook me up.

Very much so for the 70s.

Rincol · 31/10/2023 08:47

We've lost sight of what a normal poltergeist looks like, for sure.

What struck me most was how old the mum looked. In the photos she's 47, same age as me, and yet easily looks 20 years older. Hard life no doubt.
Thanks @Judashascomeintosomemoney found it on Apple TV and watched the first two episodes last night!

markusdam · 31/10/2023 10:01

To be fair back in 1967 everyone looked so much older than we do today.
