What madness is this (biscuit related)

Sprogonthetyne · 29/10/2023 10:04

DH of many years, who I previously believed was an entirely sensible person, has today described chocolate digestives as have chocolate on the bottom & writing on top. To me this is madness, and the chocolate is clearly on the top.

Who is eating their biscuits upside-down?

So, it seems clear that the writing is on top as the biscuit bakes, and the chocolate is applied to the bottom. (The BBC has enlightened us on that point, and who am I to disagree.)

But, that being the case, they need to be served and consumed upside down.

Absolutely!

You put chocolate digestives in your mouth with the chocolate side down so it's in contact with your tongue, so your husband is sort of right.

I don't!

Its5656 · 29/10/2023 23:03

Chocolate is on top and the writing is on the bottom!

MadeOfAllWork · 29/10/2023 23:03

For the purposes of eating the chocolate is uppermost.

HOWEVER

If you were putting plain digestives on a plate wouldn’t the side with the writing on be the top? In which case where does the chocolate go? On the bottom.

Hmm, I find them best eaten in pairs, chocolate sides sandwiched together in the middle so my fingers dont get chocolatey.
So, my answer is chocolate in the middle.

You are a GENIUS!

Catsmere · 30/10/2023 06:25

The way they're packed suggests the chocolate is on the top. That's certainly how I eat them.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 30/10/2023 07:42

I like to pile blue cheese on to the plain chocolate of the digestive,

Ok Heston Blumenthal, calm down! Grin

Sooo . . . .do the rules change if you hang upside down suspended by your ankles? Does the chocolate top/bottom eating method reverse?

I'm not up to the experiment but younger fitter people could carry this forward.

Tricky to drink your brew mind,

It’s been two and a half weeks since I read this thread and I’m still thinking about it. Every time I have a chocolate digestive (like right now) I don’t know what the top is anymore. My whole life is a lie 😂

It's OK. There is a solution. Just move to a proper biscuit (custard cream) and it's absolutely obvious which way up it goes.

The days of bad digestives will soon be behind you 😉

AHalfWarmedFish · 16/11/2023 12:13

I actually don’t even love chocolate digestives. They’re ok.. They’re just what’s in the cupboard and I’m so sleep deprived due to my 15 month old’s hand foot and mouth that anything carby and chocolatey is a winner right now😂

a PROPER biscuit is those Borders dark chocolate gingers. God‘s own biscuit.

Chocolate is on top! Do people also eat toast with the topping side down? I agree with you, it’s madness.

You're supposed to, to avoid crumbs...

Someone online emailed Mcvites with the same question, this was their answer ⬇️

so LTB and boycott digestives because they are both wrong

Chocolate is clearly on the bottom. The writing is on the top. The mumsnet consensus has never been more wrong.

AtomicPumpkin · 16/11/2023 17:08

Fully covered is the way to go.

Oh, you're raising the stakes.

I will see your Borders dark chocolate gingers, and raise you a Fox's Golden Crunch Cream!

FitAt50 · 16/11/2023 19:09

I actually wrote to mcvities years ago about this. They say you should eat them with the chocolate facing down. This is because your taste buds are on your tongue and you get instant chocolate hit. I thought it's madness, but it makes sense.

AHalfWarmedFish · 16/11/2023 19:45

@HappiestSleeping also a classic. You have good biscuit taste my friend

PettyMare · 16/11/2023 19:59

Oh my god! I'm sat here now having an existential biscuit crisis from reading your post and some replies. Initially I would have agreed with you, choc is on top. But now my mind is blown as a plain digestive is eaten writing side up! I need time to process all of this.

Take that time. Make tea, and eat biscuits during said time. If possible, without interruption, so that full reflection can take place.

OnWhatGrounds · 16/11/2023 20:05

Chocolate on top!

RecycleMePlease · 16/11/2023 20:05

According to my DP....after some deliberation ...it's all on how you hold them. Apparently if you hold them chocolate side up you run the risk of getting chocolate on up to three fingers....chocolate side down...only your thumb . I suppose it all depends on how many digits you want to lick.😃

Christ - biscuit eating must be fraught in your house if he's needing to grip them with 3 fingers! I either hold the sides (cos I'm a lady), or just use one finger and thumb.

And the chocolate is a topping. It's irrelevant that they put it on the bottom of the biscuit. Once they become a combined entity, the chocolate is obviously the top. Next they'll be suggesting that party rings and iced gems should be presented icing side down.
