Tell me what it is you know a lot about that most people don't?

Inspired by the trending weather thread and the individuals who appear to be au faith with weather models, got me wondering what uncommon or unique thing you know a lot about and would be regarded as people's "go to" (if they knew)?

Mine is foreign exchange.

I can name every US state and it's capital.

If you're a celeb, you could go on Richard Osman's House of Games and smash the "Where's Kazakhstan?" round!

MouseMinge · 29/10/2023 00:58

Costume and fashion history including underwear and, of course, corsets. Early film history and some shit relating to that that nobody cares about.

I've also become a reluctant minor expert on stuff that goes wrong with your oesophagus and more recently tumours in the oesophagus. Never going to come up in a pub quiz.

The human body.
My favourite subject at school was anatomy, physiology and health, I then trained as a nurse.
I was reading about the workings of the ears tonight, and thinking how amazing the tiniest part of the body is.

My head is stuffed with pop songs. I can name that tune and sing along to most things 1940-2000. It makes watching films a multi-sensorial experience and I have constant earworms.
With all that wasted brain power, I could have been a rocket scientist!

Oh and rocks. My dad was a geologist so I was often shown what were apparently interesting bits of rock and told about them on various hikes I was dragged on. A reasonable amount of it sunk it.

Also rocks. I am also a geologist.

More specifically, the hydrology of the River Don catchment, S Yorkshire.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 29/10/2023 07:33

I can identify most British country houses from their exterior and can tell you when built, who by etc. This has never been useful.
Also very good at identifying artists, makes the National Gallery more fun as it turns into a quiz.

Sea shells. I can identify loads of them, even uncommon ones, ever since a childhood obsession.

How to turn a heel on a knitted sock the old fashioned way.

Plus some very niche stuff to do with my work.

Ooh please can you DM me your pattern? I'm just getting into sock knitting.

Sorry to derail the thread 😬
