Hi all, I hope this is the right place to post!Just moved up from South East, was born on the Coast, so know W Bay and Cullercoats etc.

I work in Newcastle and my teenage daughter is in school in Fenham, so considering living up that way. My budget is between 250-290k. I’ve seen a lovely house in Denton Burn (same street as St Cuthberts High School) but a bit nervous about the area? Thinking of coming back at night, and also there’s not much in the way of a community hub there ie cafes etc, although of course Newcastle is nearby.

Any advice would be very welcome!!!

AlviarinAesSedai · 11/06/2024 21:33

I don’t know Newcastle well, but bumping thread for you.

AlviarinAesSedai · 13/06/2024 19:10

Anyone see the local news today? Raid in Chester le Street, brothel , people trafficking. But it makes a change from cannabis farms. In little old Chester.
I’m really shocked but well done the police.

PickAChew · 13/06/2024 19:29

The two are so often linked. Curious about the "commercial premises" now.

PickAChew · 13/06/2024 19:35

OK, nextdoor was interesting 😅

AlviarinAesSedai · 13/06/2024 20:54

It was above Saks the hairdresser. Next door to the Old fruit and veg shop.
I hope the poor trafficked girls and women are looked after.

PickAChew · 13/06/2024 21:53

I saw both of those mentioned among the wild suggestions and wisecracks. Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if this was just a small part of a bigger operation.

Denton Burn isn't too bad, but I'd advise you to go and have a good look round the area and see what the surrounding streets are like, i.e. near where you are thinking of buying.

RagzRebooted · 30/07/2024 21:31

In case anyone remembers my posts from last year about moving up, it's actually happening! We're renting a house in Esh Winning, I'll be working in Meadowfield and DH in Washington.

I want to get back into swimming, as well as joining a gym. It looks like there's 3 leisure centres with a pool within 20 mins drive/10 miles, which is best out of Consett, Stanley or the one in Durham? I wasn't sure what parking and traffic would be like for getting to the Durham one, despite it being closer.

Someaddedsugar · 30/07/2024 21:31

Congratulations on your move @RagzRebooted!

There's a multi-storey car park next to the leisure centre in Durham city centre. I haven't been to the other two so can't comment on those. There's also a pool at Spennymoor and one at Chester-le-street.

needlesandhaystacks · 30/07/2024 21:35

I think you have to pay for the multi story next to Durham. Consett has a good gym and pool and a big car park. Stanley has just reopened after being refurbished so not sure what it's like at the moment but similar gym to Consett and has parking near. Haven't been to the gym/pool at Durham.
Welcome to the area!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 30/07/2024 22:06

Hi Ragz! You are very, very close to me, if you fancy open water swimming rather than a pool then please message me as there are some lovely places including a quarry which is run by a proper water sports centre so all very well organised and regular water testing. We swim all through the year there and at the moment it is lovely and warm.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 30/07/2024 22:08

Bishop has a pool too at Woodhouse close. Similar distance to consett.welcome to the area. I can't remember where you moved from, whether you have DC etc but give me a yell if you need/want to meet people.

I absolutely love open water swimming! I was part of a sea swimming group that swim at Bexhill, until the sewage levels got too bad and put me off. I will definitely message you, thank you.
Moving with DH and 3 teens.

RagzRebooted · 31/07/2024 09:16

@needlesandhaystacks @Someaddedsugar thank you, so much choice! We're in the south east now but I have to drive half an hour to get to the nearest proper swimming pool. There's a tiny pool at a private gym in the nearest town but it's expensive, though our council run leisure centres are £50 a month which is ridiculous.

AlviarinAesSedai · 31/07/2024 13:41

Congratulations @RagzRebooted .
Parking is free Stanley (but very busy)
Chester le Street cheap parking
Multi storey next to freeman quay Durham
Never been to others
Washington has great pool( or did)
Stanhope has an outdoor pool doesn’t it.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 31/07/2024 14:07

Stanhope doesn't have the open air pool sadly. Hopefully it will reopen but not sure. It is very much volunteer/not for profit run and there were some big repairs to do but because there isn't long to run on the lease they couldn't get funding for the repairs.

Ragz I shall keep an eye out for a message. I'm the next village along from you and also have teens plus a pre teen. Lots to do around here, scouts etc if interested.

RagzRebooted · 31/07/2024 15:56

@OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea I did PM you this morning, has it not gone through?
Mine are 14, 17 and 18 (older 2 are boys), DS2 would like to join a boxing club if you know of any? He is very outdoorsy and is looking forward to exploring the countryside. DD was in guides but our local one closed due to low numbers, not sure she'd still want to go at her age. She's quite an introvert and not hugely keen on group activities!

What's it like for finding part time jobs for teens? DS1 has been very fortunate where we are and actually has 2, but DS2 hasn't managed to find a job here as public transport is appalling (we only got a Saturday bus service a year ago and it only runs until 6!) and there's nothing in our village apart from 2 pubs and a village shop, where jobs are snapped up.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 31/07/2024 18:00

Have replied

There is def a local boxing club. Join Esh Winning in the community and ask on there as I'm not sure of the details. Then mute the page to avoid endless found bus passes and bank cards, arguments about dirt bikes and complaints about too many adverts.

PacificCoastHighway · 31/07/2024 18:38

Congratulations on your move @RagzRebooted!

Hope everyone is having a great summer so far.

AlviarinAesSedai · 31/07/2024 21:20

I’m enjoying the sun, even if it’s sometimes too hot! It will be snowing soon or bloody raining.
I’m on my local Facebook group, I go and look every time it snows. Plus do enjoy being nosey.
If Esh doesn’t have a boxing club I bet Langley does. I know Sacriston has one.
Doesn’t Esh have a fish and chip shop that runs on coal like Beamish?

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 31/07/2024 21:30

Fields Fish and Chips runs on a coal fired range yes.

Gatekeeper · 31/07/2024 21:51

Fields fish and chops are bloody lovely. They let my son stoke the range with coal when he was younger

RagzRebooted · 31/07/2024 22:32

I just googled that fish and chips shop, the chips look amazing (proper colour on them). I'm looking forward to those!
