I have been through a really hard time which I hope is going in a better direction. I have to cope with things completely on my own with no support. Whilst supporting others . There's lots of mental health issues. Special needs. Vulnerability etc .

Anyway as I say some things are starting to get better. But the kids bedrooms are a shit hole . The kids are with their father this weekend so I'm trying to use the time to get things done. But I get tired and out of breath so quickly I get drained and don't get much done . I have just managed to do the 2 youngest kids room. I need to tidy /clean and take old bed apart in the spare room . And then put new double bed together for that room. I have to get it done tonight. Because my other son is coming over tomorrow to chat /company as he's struggling mentally so I don't want to do it whilst he's here .

So I'm drinking an energy drink in the hope it will help me stay awake till late /give me some energy

I have included pictures because I want to shame myself and motivate myself to get it done. I will add after pictures as well once done

Any ideas how the kids can keep it tidy ? In an easy to manage way. One child is autistic and forgets what he's doing. By the time he gets to his room . And then the younger one gets upset because he feels like it's on him.

We have been here 18 months. But there's been alot to pay out for . I can start making it more homely after Xmas

Sorry, @Shithole101. My comment sounded unnecessarily crappy and I really don't know why I phrased it like that. I'm Autistic, so my communication style isn't always the best, but what I wrote just sounds horrible, so I really am sorry.
And, well done for everything you've achieved within all the rooms you have tackled this week.
Xx

It's fine. I didn't take it as a bad thing . I thought it was just a question. Dont worry 💐

Have a look online for labelling items without words. Just pictures. You can either get print out, or make your own.
So for example a print out picture of socks, label socks drawer. That way, even non readers know where things go.

To be honest all they got to do is throw toys in box /drawers don't care what order they go in. But now I'm thinking I'm in 2nd thoughts. I will think about it

@Shithole101 - it’s more so they can find it again. Otherwise they will always be going ‘ I can’t find it’

It's just their toys nothing else. I might do it though. If it don't work then nothing lost

@Shithole101 - could try, just three baskets or something to start with. Ie toys cars in one, lego in another, teddies another (or whatever they play with)

Shithole101 · 28/10/2023 20:20

Have now done 3 bedrooms and bathroom and landing on the 2nd floor . Next job is 1st floor landing bathroom and my room. Feels like it's going on for ever. Getting there though. Could do with an extra day to be honest .

Rome wasn’t built in a day. You’ve done so well so far. Your room next weekend perhaps!

You have done a great job on that room OP! Be easy on yourself. If you have a proper rest and go back to the next room, it won’t seem so overwhelming. Most of it is just a bit of stuff on the floor. Tomorrow, just dump it on the beds and vacuum. With a clean floor you’ll feel better.

I have been using a stiff broom putting it into a big pile and doing keep and bin.

I'm in awe of your drive to finish it all
Well done

TheLeavesAreTurningBrown · 28/10/2023 22:29

Op that's absolutely amazing!!
You have inspired me tk move my arse.

The trick with getting second hand is to join local free cycle group.
Then paint stuff to match
I don't sand and I do use primer esp on dark wood.

My furniture is good quality and all free from different places.
Obviously I had to pay for paint and different draw handles etc.

We had it hard too: lost home and all lovley furniture.

Our painted stuff because it's older is more elegant and interesting than modern but we also have other ikea and argos stuff around house.

I'm sure Pinterest has been medicine's for oodles of idea

I'm.so sorry you lost your home and furniture. What happend ? Don't answer if you don't want to .

So today is my last day of my big Tidy up. My sons room is not bad he's sorting that himself. I need to do my own room landing and bathroom. My adult son cleaned My kitchen yesterday so that's done. Then I just Need to clean my hall way, toilet and living room. Then I'm done.

I have been doing my room for 3 hours. I felt really positive this morning. Now I feel hot achy ,drained and like I'm going in circles. I think my room is actually the worst I even struggled putting a duvet cover on ffs oh and I dragged a chest of drawers and made them go wonky now the drawers won't open /close so I can't put clothing away until I fix it. So I Need to get screw driver /Alan keys . But I also have to fight to get the stair gate open because of all the shit I have dumped there.

Younger kids are due back 4-5pm 😭

You can do it.

make the bed.

clear the mess at the bottom of the stairs

make neat piles of clothes to go into the drawers

fix the drawers if you can

put clothes away

I had to leave it like this for now. Kids are due back in an hour so I need to sort the hall way before they are back. I'm gonna sit down for 10 mins then get started

It all looks so much better. For your sake and their sake ultimately, find ways of getting them engaged with keeping on top of it, but sincere congratulations, you must be tired now!

I'm definitely going to put my foot down with them . I don't expect it to be perfect . But they can do at least something.

All the younger kids Need to really do is chuck their toys in Box/drawers . There's nothing else in their room.

I do want to get my grandson a fold out bed so a mattress don't keep getting chucked on the floor.

The older kids need to stretch their arm to reach their bin. And bring plates down . Put clothes away .

It's not hard is it not really and makes a big difference.

Well done for getting this far. I had chronically messy teenagers, I used to think I should pay the cleaner danger money to venture into their rooms. One little practical tip that worked was buying them good sized (think waist height) bins with proper lids on. The traditional wastepaper baskets were a complete waste of time.

Just thought of another trick. For several years they had those coverless duvets (think they were from M&S?) which were so convenient. Just make sure your washer is big enough though.

I already do the big bins . Their arms apprently can't stretch to their bin.

I have recently seen the coverless duvets . Was thinking about getting some I have a 10k washer ?

Got about 4 black sacks of washing to do . Hopefully get that done by Tuesday

A 10kg washing machine would be plenty big enough, I think. They dry quickly too, though I did always tumble dry them for extra speed x
