There is so much out there, but nothing seems to fit the bill any more.

We have Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ (but not in UK so some things might not be available).

We have enjoyed: Spies in Disguise, Mitchells vs the Machines, Pokemon movie, Hotel Transylvania, Despicable Me, Shrek, Tangled, Cars, Emoji film, Mario Bros, Lego movies, Monsters Inc, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Home, Sing, Trolls...

We only want animated, nothing that is too tragic or preachy. Something engaging and entertaining for adults and older teen, but fun and suitable for a slightly sensitive 8yo.

We have not all enjoyed: anything Dr Seuss, Encanto (anything with Hamilton guy involved), Planes, Monster Family, Sea Beast, probably loads more that I've just blanked.

Any ideas? There are SO MANY films out there, I need recommendations! Thanks!

DS2 is really only interested in animated atm. @CapturedLeprechaun I will definitely be trying those as soon as he agrees to live-action!

We watched 'yes day' on Netflix last week. My kids thought it was hysterical - I thought it was quite fun.

The Incredibles
Meet the Robinsons
Flushed Away
Turning red
Toy Story
Coco
Luca
Tangled
A goofy movie
Anastasia

Or if it doesn't have to be animated..
The parent trap
Matilda (either version)
Freaky Friday
Spy kids
Johnny English
Enchanted
Catch that kid
Cheaper by the dozen
Stuart little

cocksstrideintheevening · 27/10/2023 14:50

The animated Addams Family seeing as its Halloween next week?

Xmasbaby11 · 27/10/2023 14:51

Bad Guys is really good!

thelongroad · 27/10/2023 14:54

I am looking at Bad Guys and think we might have something here.

I long for the days when we didn't hvve so much bloody choice and you were happy with whatever film you could get your hands on.
Need to go through our old DVDs actually, there might be something there that teen is happy to rewatch but will still amuse ds2.

Sorry just see the update! Scratch Tangled and Anastasia.
But agree with pp about Mrs Doubtfire and Honey I Shrunk the Kids (or Ourselves, the sequel)

Topbird29 · 27/10/2023 14:55

If you want animated, we have enjoyed "strange world", the recent mario film was actually surprisingly OK, we like the spiderverse films and also lego batman. Wall-e also a favourite.
We do try and mix it up with old school films too - recent hits have been jurrasic park, Indian Jones, stargate, jumanji films - original and new versions

Ihatewinding · 27/10/2023 14:55

Agree The Incredibles and Meet the Robinsons. Ice Age is another good one but maybe too serious/sad at times.
Also what about Disney classics like Mulan or Hercules?
And Harry Potter films? Especially as coming up to Halloween.

Topbird29 · 27/10/2023 14:56

Agree - Bad guys is good!

GandTtwice · 27/10/2023 14:59

How about Paddington and then Paddington 2. Not animated but Paddington is.
Films with some CGI or animated characters can start to bridge the gap for younger kids

ReadySalty · 27/10/2023 15:02

Swallows and Amazons

EllieQ · 27/10/2023 15:15

Detective Pokémon - partially animated, and my sensitive 8 year old enjoyed it.

I’d second the Studio Ghibli films - My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle. Suitable for all ages.

frecklejuice · 27/10/2023 15:18

Haven't read all of the replies but my two love Flushed Away, Ratatouille, Monster House, Adam's Family, Hotel Transylvania.

treenu · 27/10/2023 15:19

Ron's Gone Wrong - on Disney+

The whole family found it really funny and enjoyed it.

Applerumleandcustard · 27/10/2023 15:20

101 Dalmatian’s ( the original one is by far the best , and it’s animated )
Enchanted - my favourite

MeOldBamboo · 27/10/2023 15:24

What about Oliver and Company? My kids used to love that. Based on Oliver Twist. Songs and humour, a bit of mild peril.

Sellingbedtime · 27/10/2023 15:25

Spirited away.

An absolute classic.

maslinpan · 27/10/2023 15:31

The Shaun the Sheep film. Rango. The Curse of the Were Rabbit.

Bobbotgegrinch · 27/10/2023 15:32

If you haven't seen the How to Train your Dragon films yet, then I'd recommend them.

The first one is a genuine masterpiece, and the other 2 are almost as good.

(The second one will likely break your 8 year old though. It broke me and I'm 40!)

alterego2 · 27/10/2023 15:34

Big Hero 6
Wreck-it Ralph
Both enjoyed by teens here.

Or, if you can persuade him out of animated, the Jumanji movies - either the original or the recent ones

Rainbowshit · 27/10/2023 15:35

We're watching haunted mansion tonight as it's nearly Halloween.

stayathomer · 27/10/2023 15:37

Ron gone wrong- very Mitchell’s and the machine-ey!! Also I know you don’t want a film but Clifford the big red dog and Matilda are epic!
