What time do you have dinner?

spookehtooth · 24/10/2023 22:30

I've always aimed for around 7:30pm, so mostly that time but it can be later.

I've inherited this time from growing up, and assumed its probably quite normal, but I've never really done any kind of survey like I do for other things, hence this thread.

A follow up question is: What time did you have dinner growing up in your parents house?

Always been c. 20.00 as an adult - difficult to do otherwise when working & commuting means arriving home at 19.00.

Mother had dinner on the table at 18.15 because DF arrived home at 18.10

Newtothis2005 · 25/10/2023 18:00

It varies depending on the evening - normally 7pm but sometimes as early as 515

GreenFields07 · 25/10/2023 18:07

Before kids, probably 7ish. Now with kids, they eat around 5 and we eat around 6 after them. We all eat different things for various reasons (young kids, us healthy eating etc) so we feed them first then cook our own. I couldnt imagine eating at 8pm. I take lunch at work around 1pm and I dont really like to snack so couldnt go another 7hrs before eating again

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 25/10/2023 18:18

DH and I usually eat around 9-9.15 after the kids are in bed.

Kids (6 and nearly 4) eat at 6.30-7pm. Bed by 8.30 ish - we live abroad if that seems late!

At the weekends we sometimes do a family dinner at 7pm, which is the earliest I can bear Grin

Parents ate around 6pm, which seems far too early to me. Pre-kids we averaged 7.30-8pm ish.

Timeisallwehave · 25/10/2023 18:26

My children are young so usually 5/5.30 and if we eat with them we all eat then. Otherwise we eat later 7.30-8pm

StaunchMomma · 25/10/2023 18:44

7ish.

Frenchfancy · 25/10/2023 18:46

Between 7 and 8pm. Even when the DC were little. Sometimes later if they had an activity. Snack at 4;30 to keep everyone going. I'm in France where this would be pretty normal. No-one eats dinner at 5:30.

ButterfliesandMoths · 25/10/2023 18:59

Anywhere between 5 & 7. Depends when we're hungry.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 25/10/2023 19:01

7 - 7:30pm.

Varied growing up depending on the jobs my parents did st the time.

BungalowBuyer · 25/10/2023 19:04

Usually around 6pm, sometimes a bit later.

Whichwhatnow · 25/10/2023 19:08

Small snack after school. Dinner at around 7:30. My parents liked to eat with us.

CrunchyCarrot · 25/10/2023 19:12

7 p.m. which is the same time I used to eat dinner as a child.

mamaduckbone · 25/10/2023 19:16

Growing up we always ate at 5.30pm on the dot - my mum still does. Sunday lunch was 12.45pm and always a roast.
Now - any time from 6.30 to around 8.00pm depending on who is in and what else is going on.

MystyLuna · 25/10/2023 19:34

Growing up we used to have dinner at 4.30pm because my dad worked evenings and would start work at 5pm. So we needed to eat before he started work.
now we eat dinner when we are hungry. It can be anytime between 5ish and 7ish.

Growlybear83 · 25/10/2023 19:41

I'm just about to start cooking now. We usually eat between 8-9.

Samlewis96 · 25/10/2023 20:49

7.30/8.30 if st home. If I'm working we ( staff) eat curry between 10 and half past.

Mind you I couldn't be indoors ready for bed at 8pm lol. Midnight is earliest bedtime

bringonyourwreckingball · 26/10/2023 06:34

Around 6:45/7 now I work from home so no commute. Me and two teens.

newmumabouttown · 22/06/2024 20:10

I’m still in work at 5pm!! I don’t get how that’s possible, do you all eat at your desks or on shift hours?

Kinsters · 22/06/2024 20:20

7:30pm, when DH gets home. I think we ate at 5pm as kids - we didn't eat with our parents who ate later.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 22/06/2024 20:28

I have dinner about 6, I got into the habit during lockdown when there was nothing to do in the evenings, when I was with my ex it was always 7/7:30 when he got home from work, when we split and when I did 5 days a week in the office it was always 6.30/7 after I'd been to the gym.

I now work from home so tend to put dinner on at 5.30, I go to the gym in my lunch hour.

As children we used to eat at 6.30 except on Sunday when it was 5.

perhapsatea · 22/06/2024 21:06

5.30-6pm. Couldn't eat as late as 8pm - I've found in peri-m eating anything (especially sweet or any alcohol) after 8pm wakes me in the night. Also think I read somewhere that you should allow 3 hours after a meal before sleep - not sure there's any science to it, but that would mean going to sleep at 11 and I'm more of a 10-10.30 type :)

Bloom15 · 22/06/2024 21:15

Usually aim for about half 5

sciencemama · 22/06/2024 21:21

Kids eat about 4.30 pm, we (me and dp eat anywhere between 5.30 and 7pm depending what time finishing work.

cozycat1 · 22/06/2024 21:33

5.30 to 6pm. As a young child probably 5ish.

GameOfJones · 22/06/2024 21:52

Normally around 6pm. We always ate at 6 when I was growing up too.

I don't have a long commute so I'm normally in the door between 5 and 5.30pm. DH works from home and finishes at 5pm so there's plenty of time for one of us to make something for dinner.

It means that we can all eat as a family (DDs go up to bed at 7pm) and then the evening is totally free, washing up done etc, downstairs and ready to chill out by 7.30pm.

I don't really understand the "aren't you hungry by bedtime" comments. Aren't you hungry if you have a massive gap between lunch and dinner?
