What time do you have dinner?

spookehtooth · 24/10/2023 22:30

I've always aimed for around 7:30pm, so mostly that time but it can be later.

I've inherited this time from growing up, and assumed its probably quite normal, but I've never really done any kind of survey like I do for other things, hence this thread.

A follow up question is: What time did you have dinner growing up in your parents house?

Dinner is lunchtime so anytime from 12.30- 2 for me.

5/5.15pm with the kids as don't want to cook twice, like to eat together for social reasons and I also fast so finishing eating for the day that early works well

Another faster here. I do 16:8 so like to finish eating by 5pm ideally.

HaplessRhombus · 25/10/2023 07:26

Somewhere between 5.15 and 5.45, depending on if my two year old lets me start cooking before his dad stops work at 5. We all eat together every day, so we eat on the earlier end to suit toddler. If we're eating separately from toddler (but not out of the house without him) then we eat once he's in bed at 7.30.

My ideal dinner time would be around 6-6.30, I don't like eating later than that.

Growing up, my brother and I always ate dinner separately from my parents during the week. So we ate a kids type dinner around 4.30-5pm and my mum ate with my dad when he got home and we were in bed.

Mumaway · 25/10/2023 07:27

If eating with DCs, 530, if eating just adults, 730

frenchfries111 · 25/10/2023 07:34

7.15-730pm, DH doesn’t get home from work until after 6 or even later.
DD eats at 5.30pm, she won’t wait and she’s autistic and can’t stand eating near people if possible.

Amberlady · 25/10/2023 07:35

Kids all adults and have left home now. I finish work at 6, and DH gets in about 6.30 so around 7.30 for us. When the kids were young I was PT and would feed them first about 5.30 depending upon activities.

TheStoryof10 · 25/10/2023 07:37

I finish work at 2.30pm, collect children from school at 3.10pm and then we eat between 5/5.30pm depending on clubs. We always ate at this time too growing up.

Before I had children and worked longer days, dinner would happen at 6/6.30pm so not much for a difference really.

ampel · 25/10/2023 07:40

I usually aim for 7pm. We ate around 8pm growing up. I assume people who eat
earlier than 5.30 are shift workers?

Somewhatchallenging · 25/10/2023 07:41

About 5:30-6 as a child - when my dad got in from work.
Now about 6:30. We used to eat later at around 7 or 7:30, but I feel better eating earlier.

Eating at 8? 9?! I've got pyjamas on by then watching telly with a cup of tea, bed at half ten ish.

How can you all go so long between lunch and tea? When do people manage to watch all these box sets (not me) if they're cooking well into the evening?

I finish work at 5 so food is normally ready 6-6.30. Tea was around 5.15 growing up, after news round as I recall!

Is this another class signifier to do with manual workers in the family? 😄

The question I’d have is - how are you not hungry by bed time if you eat at 6?

I have lunch at 1-1:30. I just don’t think I’d be ready for my dinner at 6.

if I eat at 8, there’s still time for two one-hour episodes before bed if we are watching tv.

I’ll also add, it is ok to feel hungry. I know there’s an obsession with snacking now but feeling hungry is fine.

yikesanotherbooboo · 25/10/2023 07:45

8.30 , Everyone home from work and baby in bed.
For many years when the now adult DC were at school we aimed for 7.30 even if it meant DH going back to work to finish off his day.
When the DC were small they ate together at 5.30-6.00 ie after school and activities or whatever.
When I was a child we ate dinner at 7.00. Again this was determined by the time at which people got home from work and school .

Gingerbread981 · 25/10/2023 07:47

Anytime between 6.30 and 8.30 depending on kids clubs etc. I wish it was 6.30.
as a kid-6pm always.

Catsmere · 25/10/2023 07:48

Used to be 7pmish, but in the last few years it's got much earlier, about 6 - which reminds me, I need to get on with it now!

Splishsplashsplooshsplosh · 25/10/2023 07:49

All you 5pm dinner eaters what happens if you fancy a night out at a restaurant? Do you just go really early? Otherwise you must be STARVING going to eat for say, 8 when that's 3 hours later than usual for you..

Citygirlrurallife · 25/10/2023 07:51

6pm Mon-Thurs because DS has activities at 7pm those nights until late. Otherwise more fluid but usually by 7pm

growing up I feel like it was always 6:30

pumpykins · 25/10/2023 07:51

I used to eat later but these days i try to restrict 'eating hours' to 10am - 6pm

Duo2tu · 25/10/2023 07:55

Grew up eating around 7-7.30. Mum was quite snobbish about people who ate earlier!
Now we usually eat between 5 and 6 depending on activities. I quite like having it all cleared away early and a nice stretch of evening ahead. I don’t like eating after 8 as I feel like it sits heavy in my stomach all night.

Snozzlemaid · 25/10/2023 07:56

We eat somewhere between 6 and 7pm now DCs are adults and we're all working. We all take turns in cooking.
When they were at school it was earlier, somewhere between 5.30 to 6pm as I finished work earlier.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/10/2023 07:56

Whenever it is ready!

We don't have a fixed time. Rarely earlier than 6pm and rarely later than 9pm, but otherwise depends on what we're doing, what we're eating, who's cooking, what time they get home etc. We just eat when we eat!

It was like this in my house growing up as well. I don't really understand the idea of rigid mealtimes.

Yes my body has got used to eating early (I’m also desperate for lunch by 12pm) but if I’m going out for dinner, or on the night I can’t eat until later I’ll have a snack at around 4 and then I’m fine til the meal. I don’t usually snack in the evenings (just because I’m not usually hungry after dinner) so it does mean more food on those days but that’s fine.

LeonBlack · 25/10/2023 07:59

8pm or later.

Around 6pm as a child.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 25/10/2023 08:00

We ate st 7 / 7:30 growing up, and still do unless there's a specific reason not to on a particular day. This seemed to be mostly the norm among people we knew where we lived before (SE England), but we now live in the NW and most people seem to eat much earlier.

WinchSparkle80 · 25/10/2023 08:02

Between 6pm and 7pm, depending on work calls ending and kids clubs.

It was anytime between 5:30 and 9 growing up, always felt chaotic not knowing.

Hibambinos · 25/10/2023 08:22

5pm or I’m in child meltdown central….
