What time do you have dinner?

I've always aimed for around 7:30pm, so mostly that time but it can be later.

I've inherited this time from growing up, and assumed its probably quite normal, but I've never really done any kind of survey like I do for other things, hence this thread.

A follow up question is: What time did you have dinner growing up in your parents house?

Normally around 6pm. We always ate at 6 when I was growing up too.

I don't have a long commute so I'm normally in the door between 5 and 5.30pm. DH works from home and finishes at 5pm so there's plenty of time for one of us to make something for dinner.

It means that we can all eat as a family (DDs go up to bed at 7pm) and then the evening is totally free, washing up done etc, downstairs and ready to chill out by 7.30pm.

I don't really understand the "aren't you hungry by bedtime" comments. Aren't you hungry if you have a massive gap between lunch and dinner?

If I eat at 12 I'm not hungry until after 6.

5pm here. I've tried eating later in order to be a proper grown up 😁, but feel so hungry I snack and spoil my dinner. I also can't be arsed to spend my evening cooking and cleaning the kitchen. 8ish is my time to relax, not time to load the dishwasher.

Oh dear - starting a debate on what is 'dinner'!

I'm going to assume it means 'main meal of the day'. If having people round for lunch... 12.30 - 1.00p.m.

If just having family supper - around 6-6.30pm. Then lunch wou!d be sandwiches/soup etc.

If having guests to dinner in the evening 7-7.30.

We are fairly decrepit and I like to be in bed by about 9p.m.! (Not if we have guests abviously!)

Maddy70 · 24/06/2024 09:23

Around 9 but we dont live in the uk and everyone eats later here.

Hoolahoophop · 24/06/2024 10:33

Dont remember when I was very small at home, but from what I do remember. 7pm while we listened to the Archers on the radio!

Now 6pm to get the kids up to bed at 7 most of the time, later if DH has been in London.

DiscoBeat · 24/06/2024 10:36

I always try to aim for 6.30 but it's usually nearer 7. I like to stop eating at least 3 hours before bed. 2 adults and 2 teenagers.

6 or 6.30

peachescariad · 24/06/2024 10:45

When kids were younger, they'd eat around 5ish. When they were older teens and started to do later sports/dance classes, it went to 7.30ish, now they're young adults and working, it's 6.30 as we can't wait any longer and I lose my appetite past 7.30. Plus I like my evenings clear to do things after dinner now and not clearing up, loading dishwasher at 8pm.

pinkspeakers · 24/06/2024 10:51

8pm usually. Used to aim for 7pm when kids were at home all the time and pre-Covid. Slipped later during lockdown and never really went back as kids went to University. I prefer having more time to do work, exercise, other activities before dinner then feel I can relax afterwards.

At home I think my mother aimed for 7pm when we were teens, but it was quite often later. I remember often having dinner in front of East Enders at 7pm as dinner wasn't ready in time (no iplayer in those days!)

pinkspeakers · 24/06/2024 10:57

I eat lunch at about 1pm then normally have little trouble waiting to eat until 8pm. For some reason I need to snack mid-morning, or have extra early lunch, but don't get hungry in the afternoons. If occasionally I have a very early dinner (like 6pm) in order to do something in the evening then I sometimes find I am lying in bed hungry at 11pm!

It feels wrong to me to watch tv before about 9 or 9.30 pm. An hour on the sofa with the tv on is plenty and I don't head to bed until 10.30ish. An evening at home would seem to long to fill if I ate at 6pm. I prefer not to exercise or work after dinner, but happy to do these things up until 7 or 7.30.

Any time between 5.30 (unusual) and 9.30. It all depends on who's going out when for exercise, sport, book club, meet friends etc (two adults and two older teens). It's rare for all 4 of us to be home all evening.

This is us too. We eat around teen sport and DH or me driving him.

If I eat at 12 I'm not hungry until after 6.

That's my point though, so you go 6 hours after a meal until you're hungry again. Me too! 6 hours after my evening meal would take me to around midnight and I'm asleep by then, so not hungry.

I'm just explaining to the "aren't you hungry in the evening" questioners (not saying that it was you)

RomeoRivers · 24/06/2024 14:16

We eat at 5pm because the kids are little.

Growing up we always ate at 6pm.
