Going on holiday tomorrow and I have covid ...

navyplaint · 24/10/2023 07:36

Pretty much that
Going to Lanzarote tomorrow and woke up Sunday with sore throat.
Anyway yesterday I had a lots of phlegm and felt like I had a head cold.
Had a test lying around and it was a strong positive.
I've never had covid before but at the minute it feels like a cold.
No temperature and I haven't lost my appetite /don't feel sick or anything just feel like I have a head cold.
I feel guilty having to get on a plane with covid but if I don't go it's a £3000 holiday
I am okay now to go abroad with covid aren't I?

I’ve just been to the Canaries - it’s not 40c, more like mid-20s now @Lastchancechica
I got some stomach issue the last day there, I think was something I ate, thankfully was ok on flight as had eased by then, but would not liked to have been to loo & back for 3.5 hours. It wasn’t covid, it’s only had it - mildly - last month.
For me it’s a personal choice re flying w covid as it depends on how you feel, day of infection etc. I think we all know it’s everywhere now so vulnerable individuals need to make their own decisions as well.
I use the 5-day rule in terms of being infectious but adult DCs have gone out before then - it’s more or less if you feel ‘up to it’. I would at least take something to stop the sneezes on the plane if you can. Paracetamol at the least.

Like most decent members of society I couldn’t bear the thought of passing it to someone vulnerable who might die because of it. Pregnant women have a higher chance of dying or their babies dying if they catch covid in pregnancy. So I hope you feel happy with your decision that 3 grand is more important than someone else’s life.

I hope you have an awful holiday.

You sound like a nice person 🥴

It’s not 2020. Most people have had Covid multiple times. (Hence not the Nobel virus it was) It will circulate every year. At this time or year you can guarantee a few people on a plane will have it. Along with maybe some nasty colds. Young people are not being hospitalised in their droves!

People are going to work with it. As we have seen NHS staff are told to come in to work with it.
Very few are testing

Some people on here really need to move on now.

Delatron · 25/10/2023 09:43

Novel virus!

What a load of complete and utter bollocks.

Nobody needs to lose £3k for what has proven (for OP, and for many people) to be a mild and very short lived illness. It would be mad to do so.

You have taken the stay at home to save lives message far too far for far too long. You need to stop the virtue signalling and start getting on with life. Get professional help if you need it.

Life has returned to normal, like it or not.

Killingmytime · 24/10/2023 20:40

What a vile comment.
we still have to work and live?? Unless we should end up homeless..
let’s hope you or your kids don’t end up with compromised immune systems, i wonder if you’ll say such awful things then?
i don't see the point in this, you’re going any way, you just want people to tell you it’s ok.

Not vile at all. Its life unfortunately for some. We all put our own lives on hold for months on end and caused untold damage to ourselves, our children, our finances and the economy trying to 'help out'. Those days are thankfully finished.

Quarantino · 25/10/2023 10:50

Life has returned to normal, like it or not.

For some, yes. Not for the people who can't work because of the effects of covid.

Please tell me how my friend can "move on"? Genuinely, what do you suggest?

Vulnerable people have to inconvenience themselves because others won't be courteous enough to reduce mixing in public when they have covid, or wearing masks, or being at all bothered about spreading it.

It seems there is one section of society that people are fine with "not getting back to normal" because they can't face the idea that their avoidance of mild inconvenience has real actual effects on them so they pretend we live in a world where passing on covid has no consequences.

Theokaycokey · 25/10/2023 10:55

Honestly don't go. I've just had COVID, three weeks ago and am still recovering. The cold part is the easiest part. The fatigue hit me once the cold had subsided. Yes you can travel with COVID. But no one will want you to, Inc airline staff/hotel workers. The current advice is that, if you have symptoms, you isolate for 5 days. If you contact the airline and hotel they might well agree to you postponing your holiday. Did you pay using a credit card/have any insurance?

Topseyt123 · 25/10/2023 11:01

@Quarantino I am also a medically vulnerable person due to several medical conditions.

I have had all my vaccines including all boosters as and when recommended (one just over a fortnight ago) and I have been back to nearly normal life for around 2 years now. You just do what suits you and get on with it.

If I'm honest, I gave up on lockdowns due to sick (not Covid) elderly parents who at the time had no care package in place and couldn't manage by themselves, and a dying father in 2021(again, not Covid related).

Topseyt123 · 25/10/2023 11:04

@Theokaycokey She is now testing negative anyway. No need for all that farting about.

40c temperature/ fever of people sick with covid not the outside climate.

We had temperatures like that for nearly two weeks - with full body shakes. Not fun on holiday!!! I couldn’t even open the curtains - so no I would not dream of going on holiday with the latest strain - putting aside the issues around getting on a packed flight with recycled air /social responsibility elements.

Lastchancechica · 25/10/2023 12:04

Just to be clear, I am not a person who gives a damn about bloody covid, and was horizontal about it until we caught the new strain. The point of my post is to warn others that it starts very mildly and then it seems to come in stages, the second stage is very bad. It is worth noting just how bad it might be if you are travelling.

notimagain · 25/10/2023 12:07

getting on a packed flight with recycled air

Just for accuracy on most airliners it's air that's been recycled through HEPA filters topped up with fresh air from outside the aircraft to replace the percentage that gets dumped as part of the ventilation process.

Out of interest how many people who claim they wouldn't currently fly having tested positive for Covid would nevertheless continue to use pubic transport of any form (e.g. bus, taxi, coach, tube?)

Edited

Anyone with the latest strain would be lucky to make it on any kind of transport.

If you have other strains that aren’t so severe I guess if you can’t afford the time off work, you just have to travel on public transport anyway.

navyplaint · 25/10/2023 14:10

@Lastchancechica how do you know that everyone who catches the new strain will have the same symptoms ?
And get it as severe ?
Just like the other strains -some were hospitalised and others didn't even realise they had it.
Just because mr A is really poorly with the new strain doesn't mean mr b with a totally different immune system will react the same
It's all just guesswork and over the top reactions

Well you don’t know how you are going to react to this strain, but so far of the 15 -20 friends we have with it - all were flattened by it, none had a mild version. None. So I can only go by our own personal experience. I can’t speak for everyone. We have had hospitalisations in our friendship group.

The strains in the past have affected everyone differently up to now, this one has been universally horrid.

There is no point in me trying to explain just how bad it is to you. You can only appreciate it once you have been through it. We are all young, fit and healthy. I am genuinely concerned for CEV this time around.

You can do what you want, my concern was for you. I couldn’t stand up properly for days and couldn’t contemplate going anywhere.

Meadowfly · 25/10/2023 16:27

Last chance - everyone I know who has had covid recently (lots of people) has felt awful for a few days and then a bit knocked out for about 10 days. Nothing dramatic. Somewhere between flu and a cold. But anecdata is meaningless!

OceanicBoundlessness · 25/10/2023 16:35

I used to look at the community prevalence and calculate from that how many people with COVID would be in any space I was in. Cafes, busy shops, gigs, cinema etc.
I'll have been exposed over and over again going off my maths but we're not always susceptible as you've proved op by only having more it for the first time.
Hope you enjoy your holiday

ttcat37 · 25/10/2023 17:01

I can only imagine that the people who are so flippant about exposing people to covid haven’t been serious ill or had loved ones seriously ill or die. There’s plenty of people who are much more vulnerable than you are. Again, if you’d experienced some of the horrific long term long-covid symptoms that people are still suffering 3 years later perhaps you’d be less flippant.
People saying “it’s just a cold”. I don’t want your fucking cold either thanks. Stay at home and stop spreading it.
As for the person saying I have covid anxiety and hopes I get therapy… thanks but I’m just pregnant and don’t want me or my unborn baby to die.

You can demand people stay home but it’s highly unlikely

Hardly anyone is testing and people are doing every day things with a cold, which may well be Covid. They don’t know either way as no test.

See my previous post. Thanks but I don’t want me or my unborn baby to die. Or anyone else vulnerable for that matter.
Maybe you should seek therapy for selfish tendencies?
