Where did you grow up dialect quiz.

This was doing the rounds a few years ago but I remembered it today and posted it on another thread.
However I thought it deserved a wider audience.

For some reason the New York Times made a quiz that can pinpoint where you grew up with amazing accuracy.

Enjoy

Is there a share token to get around the pay wall? I'd subscribe but I end up forgetting to cancel and I'm trying to reduce my subscriptions at the moment.

Antst · 16/10/2023 20:18

How interesting! I got "you're not from around here." I think it was that I call trousers "pants" and "trousers" from living in the US for quite a while.

I didn't run into the pay wall. I was wondering why because I usually do with NYT links.

Squirrelsnut · 16/10/2023 20:20

I remember doing this; it was very accurate.

ferrousfumarate · 16/10/2023 20:22

Grr it's telling me to subscribe, but I have done it before. It was accurate for me. It makes me wonder about some of the slang I use. For example, I call a bread roll a batch and the map showed that the term is only used in the Wirral (where I'm from) and in Coventry. How do two places which are quite far apart have the same slang term not used anywhere else in the country?!

RampantIvy · 16/10/2023 20:22

I am not subscribing to this so I can't do the quiz.

SauvignonBlanche · 16/10/2023 20:24

Pay wall for me.

MadeOfAllWork · 16/10/2023 20:25

Oh. It didn’t want me to subscribe.

Paywall

Atomickittyxx · 16/10/2023 20:38

Paywall 🙁

BreatheAndFocus · 16/10/2023 20:39

Sounds interesting but I can’t see it because of the paywall.

bigplant · 16/10/2023 20:40

Paywall here too.

MadeOfAllWork · 16/10/2023 20:41

When I go back to it now it has a paywall. Sorry about that.

Those with the paywall, try it in incognito mode. Worked for me.

RampantIvy · 16/10/2023 20:45

Nope. Still a pay wall.

Tarkan · 16/10/2023 20:54

I already subscribe but think the paywall will stop most.

It gave me Inverness/Fort William/Edinburgh as the most likely places.

I'm from Glasgow but moved to Angus when I was 11. Ive never used very much local slang and tbh don't even use many Scottish words for things. There's just a few things like fizzy juice that give me away I guess.

Tarkan · 16/10/2023 20:55

Whoops I didn't mean to add the screenshot. That was before I took the extra questions and it added Edinburgh after them.

LexieLoos · 16/10/2023 21:00

If you delete the REGIWALL from the end of the link it should work

SwedishEdith · 16/10/2023 21:02

No pay wall for me and bang on. Didn't get a question about bread rolls though. And for one or two questions, could apply most of the options.

foodsonitsway · 16/10/2023 21:03

It worked for me, very accurate too

LeefsPrings · 16/10/2023 21:06

Nope, can't get past the paywall.

I don't see it? I just can't get past the pay wall, no matter what I try.😔

Yettisrus2 · 16/10/2023 21:12

Interesting, although I spent a lot of time growing up overseas as a child it did get the area right as I've spent most of my life in the South East.
