Where did you grow up dialect quiz.

This was doing the rounds a few years ago but I remembered it today and posted it on another thread.
However I thought it deserved a wider audience.

For some reason the New York Times made a quiz that can pinpoint where you grew up with amazing accuracy.

Enjoy

Still can’t get past the paywall, even trying what people have suggested

MadeOfAllWork · 16/10/2023 21:16

For those who do get it then you can do an extra 50 or so questions and it makes it even more accurate.

Nope, I can't get in past the paywall either via any option.

NotesApp · 16/10/2023 21:20

Amazing- I thought it might tell me the city I’ve lived in for 30 years but it instead told me the town I lived age 0-15.

BertaBobAndMeToo · 16/10/2023 21:22

Mine got within five miles of my home town

MurielThrockmorton · 16/10/2023 21:24

Didn't work for me, thought Blackpool / NW but I'm from the East Mids.

theduchessofspork · 16/10/2023 21:34

I got a splodge across the south (except for the far West).. accurate but also fairly broad

2023shady · 16/10/2023 21:35

Got me right for the area I lived age 11 and up
(Born Cornwall, grew up in Wigan)
Areas changed slightly for anon!

PrancerandDancer · 16/10/2023 21:38

Deleting paywall off the link worked for me.

Very accurate it gave me the town I was born. And a slightly high scoring on the town I lived in as a child (other side of the country)

Mrburnshound · 16/10/2023 21:45

Haha scarily accurate!

Friolero · 16/10/2023 21:52

It worked for me (I'm not a subscriber).

It was very accurate for me, SE England.

lozrox90 · 16/10/2023 21:53

Born and raised in Coventry, quiz came up with Stoke on Trent. Not too far away I suppose 😂

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/10/2023 21:55

Really wanted to do it but can't

MainlyOnThePlain · 16/10/2023 21:57

The second round of questions pinpointed me to within a few miles of my hometown, but the first round was a more general north/north eastern area - which I now know from lockdown genealogy accurately reflects the back-and-forth migration of mining families. Fascinating how language leaves a human trace.

AngeloMysterioso · 16/10/2023 22:02

Mine came up with Peterborough/Oxford. You could pretty much split my growing up straight down the middle between Essex and Staffs/Cheshire…I guess it came up with the answer that’s geographically between the two?!

EddieVedderSingsToMe · 16/10/2023 22:07

For me it works on google chrome but not on safari browser.

BestIsWest · 16/10/2023 22:15

Very broad swathe covering almost the whole of south Wales up as far Aberystwyth.
I was interested to see that Grampa is most common in Swansea and Scotland.

Dragonsandcats · 16/10/2023 22:15

How do you get to the extra questions?

MadeOfAllWork · 16/10/2023 22:16

When you get to the end it tells you what the common results were, with maps, scroll down from there.

I was able to do the quiz, but in no way accurate for me. Probably because I haven’t lived there since I was 18, and I speak differently to many in my home town.

moofolk · 16/10/2023 22:17

It got me right, but maybe the fact that I chose ALL of the options for rain was a giveaway I'm from Manchester.

HipHopBanzai · 16/10/2023 22:20

I opened my browser in incognito mode and it worked fine. It placed me exactly in the area I grew up in rather than the city I've lived in for the last 20 years.

The answers that seemed to really help pinpoint me were maiden (for hanging clothes on to dry), lolly ice, seatie (ride on a back of a bike) and tick (childhood game).

Eddyraisins · 16/10/2023 22:20

Mine was 25 miles away.

Do people really use all of these words?

I do think words are changing though. My kids don't use half the words I would have used in the 90s.

North East here. Would have said clothes horse, ice pop, croggy and Tiggy.

I find it fascinating.

Morewineplease10 · 16/10/2023 22:23

Accurate for me!! Mardy is usually a giveaway!
