Where did you grow up dialect quiz.

This was doing the rounds a few years ago but I remembered it today and posted it on another thread.
However I thought it deserved a wider audience.

For some reason the New York Times made a quiz that can pinpoint where you grew up with amazing accuracy.

Enjoy

Accurate for me!! Mardy is usually a giveaway!

I will never forget the look I got when I first said that after moving south. A Scottish lady stepped in 😂

ReturnOfTheRainMac · 16/10/2023 22:30

I wish I could take the test! Where I'm from is right on the cusp of the bap/cob/batch/breadcake debate (moved at 11 to around 20 miles away and may as well have been a different country) and I'm so interested.

If you google British- Irish dialect Quiz it should come up without pay wall.

SecretAgent00777 · 16/10/2023 22:37

This link should work (hopefully)

feck it. It works for me in incognito mode

PicturesOfDogs · 16/10/2023 22:37

I tried and got a paywall using all options. Then I just googled, clicked through and it let me do it.
pretty accurate, but covered a broad area

MrsSchadenfreude · 16/10/2023 22:39

The first one was spot on. I did the extra questions and it moved me about a hundred miles south west.

Oohmontydon · 16/10/2023 22:41

Came up with the entire south east all the way up to Norfolk for me. Not at all accurate to a specific location.

InMySpareTime · 16/10/2023 22:46

My family never stay where they were born, and all have a varied lexicon, so it was wildly inaccurate for me.
It says I'm from most of England and a bit of Scotland, but misses the city I grew up in, and the city I brought up the DCs in.
It was more accurate for the DCs who have only lived in one place, but even they had anomalies based on loan words in the family vernacular.
We did have a lively scone debate over it though, as I got stuck on that question. Either pronunciation seems equally valid to me.

dressedforcomfort · 16/10/2023 22:54

Manage to get in by deleting the word paywall.

I honestly didn't have high expectations. I grew up in a fairly non-descript part of Lincolnshire and have inherited (non-local) dialect words from both parents, who had strong regional accents. So am a bit of a mongrel really and never thought it would match me in a million years but it narrowed it down to a 30 mile area (of which I grew up right in the middle!)

A very clever little tool! Grin

Where did you grow up dialect quiz.
Ilikeyourdecor · 16/10/2023 22:55

It suggested two places for me. One is where I've lived for the last 19 years. The other is a 40 min drive from where I went to uni (other side of the country). Neither are near where I lived for the first 18 years of my life, but even at the time I knew I didn't have much in the way of a local accent.

IDriveMySupernova · 16/10/2023 22:57

It was correct for me (north east/north yorks), but I was mindful to leave out some of my acquired Southern dialect.

Oneblindmouse · 16/10/2023 22:59

No paywall for me. Not accurate though. Apparently I'm from Stoke on Trent.

Wrong. Born in Manchester and lived there all my life.

Mourningbecomeselectra · 16/10/2023 22:59

I was interested to see if it knew anything about South Wales. Yep, it did.

scotstarstrikestwo · 16/10/2023 23:00

It showed aberdeen/orkney/shetland for me...grew up in shetland and have lived in Aberdeen for 20years so pretty accurate! No option for extra questions though :(

Goldmember · 16/10/2023 23:09

It got me 40 miles of my home town.

GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife · 16/10/2023 23:11

I remember doing it last time, it was very accurate for me.

IsadoraQuagmire · 16/10/2023 23:12

Not accurate for me either. First said Oxford, then Brighton after the extra questions. I'm from London.

OneFrenchEgg · 16/10/2023 23:15

Nope! Said Brighton and Oxford first than Somerset!

Girlontherailreplacementbusservice · 16/10/2023 23:18

I knew I would break it! One northern parent, one southern parent, lived in one place until 8 and moved again at 12. It missed by birth county (I didn't spot any of the dialect words from that area), the other two counties I was in as a child or either of those I have lived in as an adult. Despite being in the Midlands or south all my life it opted for a board stroke across the north - admittedly it was darkest on my Mam's home area so I obviously have more dialect from her than from dad or 40 odd years of me!

QuestionableMouse · 16/10/2023 23:19

Gave me Middlesbrough, I grew up in Hartlepool so pretty close!

IsabelleSE19 · 16/10/2023 23:24

I selected virtually all of the different ways to say it's raining hard 😂

Verite1 · 16/10/2023 23:33

It got me completely wrong. When I did the first section it came up with three possibilities. One an hour away, the other two no where I’ve even lived. When I did the further questions it got even more wrong!

VineRipened · 16/10/2023 23:36

Got in from Googling.

Spot on with the town I grew up in.

Identified by tea making, term of endearment, feeling the cold and individual bread product, amongst other things.

WanderingAroundintheLark · 16/10/2023 22:30

It doesn't give you any results or analysis though! Very annoying when I completed the entire thing and it just says they have recorded my results!!! Gee thanks York people!🙄
