Just for sat night chat, what job do you think holds the biggest kudos? I think probably a medical consultant or barrister... what do you think...

My job seems to have a bit of a wow factor.

As in wow, you can make a living doing that?

The answer is actually no (sadly I could not and my “living”money comes from other revenue streams) but I’m a biscuit decorator.

But yes, it is as fun as it sounds. It’s like Charlie and the Chocolate factory without all the kids and arseholes 😁

It's international human rights lawyer....... must also be HOT AND SINGLE

That’s an honorary title so doesn’t count surely.

You're thinking of Captain General, which is honorary. Commandant General is the professional title of the most senior RM officer. Gorgeous uniform!

Rainbowshit · 15/10/2023 06:12

A professional nose. Not so much impressive as intriguing.

Fifireee · 15/10/2023 06:20

With high ranking Army or Navy I always assume there is a lot of nepotism involved or school tie crap. Could you rise from normal soldier to general? Or sailor to Sea Lord without some kind of connection?

I’m impressed by doctors, paramedics or prison officers.

Also plumbers and electricians. Because you may be an astrophysicist or Sea Lord but if your central heating isn’t working you’re just a freezing cold astrophysicist until the plumber arrives.

Moonlamp · 15/10/2023 06:29

My Gramps's Brother was a Deep Sea Welder.

I've often wondered wether I was being trolled about that, but no, apparently it's a thing!

rasellagirl · 15/10/2023 07:22

I once heard the First Sea Lord being interviewed on Radio 2, I think on the basis of having an impressive job title. He sounded very likeable and down to earth. Chris Evans asked him if he liked Patrick O’Brian’s seafaring novels and he said yes he did.

PinkyDinkyDoodle · 15/10/2023 07:28

I had an ex-boyfriend who was a test pilot. It was less exciting than I had imagined. It is mainly about the precision required to be able to repeat actions many times while changing only one variable.

I also had an ex who was in Intelligence. Very few vodka martinis were involved, but he did get to take pictures while hanging out of a helicopter.

Someone up thread mentioned Professor Sue Black. I think her job is impressive, but she is awesome.

@Blinkityblonk does Professor Brian Cox also qualify via two categories? Or is his time in D-Ream not enough to classify him as a rock star?

Landed wealth will often be attracted to the services - normally the Army. It is a meritocracy now though and I think it’s been that way for a long time. Though I would add that once in a senior rank it is rare to get demoted even for non-performance.

I know a couple of retired officers who, despite a long service, never got past captain and I can see why. I knew a Second Sea Lord who came from an ordinary background, but was exceptionally bright, quiet, measured and made decisions that proved to be turning points. Never flash, always understated but focused on the whole agenda. At weekends he spent time in the garden, fixing stuff in the house and reading books from WH Smith. If someone from the village popped by he would just put everything down and make them a cup of tea.

For me it’s a paramedic. Like superheroes IMO.

Chief economist. I work with a few from those who work at the BoE and also private banks. Great brains

I’m a surgeon and prof. Trust me I’m also a mum and very ordinary, most parents at school don’t know what I do.
Astronaught is what I’d dream to be….
What’s a sea Lord?

I am wowed by your humility!!! You are amazing

I live in Portugal and one of the biggest bands here has one singer who’s a heart surgeon and the other is a paediatrician. They both still work in their day jobs and fit gigs around it. That seems pretty impressive to me.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 15/10/2023 08:51

I dont find any job title impressive or demanding of respect. I don't care if you are a CEO, judge or a bin man if you are a nice person you get respect from me.

alrighthen · 15/10/2023 09:15

That’s seriously impressive! What’s the band called @Ithinkitsimpressive?

At the risk of their own.

Yes I think anyone who risks their own life for others is a league of their own

Ithinkitsimpressive · 15/10/2023 09:47

@alrighthen they’re called Os Quatro e meia (the 4 and a half) Tiago is the heart surgeon & Ricardo the paediatrician

they only sing in Portuguese so their market is a bit limited. They worked in the hospital all through Covid and wrote a song about it Ola, Solidao (hello loneliness)

Thanks @Ithinkitsimpressive Not the point of the thread but couldn’t help noticing they’re rather gorgeous too.. Talk about God giving with both hands! Imagine being a super fan of the band and then getting dreamy Tiago as your heart surgeon!

MsJuniper · 15/10/2023 10:43

I always think Architect has a great combination of creativity and expertise implied.

Scrum master is surely the best job title, though.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 15/10/2023 12:24

Chocolate taster sounded good

Have met two Spinal Surgeons at a party. They were very impressive but not a lot to say for themselves. It was amusing to watch them condescend to speak to an orthopaedic surgeon who was a lot more fun.

Also met the CEO of a massive global finance company. He'd run all kinds of companies and retired several times but clearly couldn't sit still. He was all over the place at the meeting I was in, ideas ping ponging out of him. Insanely clever but must be exhausting to be married to

daisychain01 · 15/10/2023 13:44

Could you rise from normal soldier to general?

it involves going from NCO to CO (non-commissioned officer to commissioned officer).

going up the ranks in military is very tough indeed. What you're describing is like going from tea-boy or girl to CEO. How many of those are there, a tiny number.
