Actors in roles that weren't all that convincing

And this is not an actor/actress bashing thread, an actor can be hit and miss depending on role, dialogue and other factors. And it's ok to agree to disagree.

OP posts:

Martine McCutcheon in Love Actually.

Needhelp101 · 13/10/2023 11:30

Completely agree about Ryan Reynolds! But like Keanu, he appears to be so nice (and funny and self deprecating) in real life that he's forgiven for always playing himself.

And yes to the PP who mentions Jack Black in Jumanji. Bloody hell, I could almost SEE his female equivalent in him when he was on screen as the avatar. Superb performance.

JudyGemstone · 13/10/2023 11:50

Also Chloe Grace Moretz in Suspiria 2018, she couldn’t really hold her own next to the other amazing actors.

Seems like a nice girl but I always feel I can see her acting. She was everywhere for a couple of years so makes sense about the flavour of the month approach to casting.

beguilingeyes · 13/10/2023 12:25

Tom Cruise as Reacher is the obvious one. 6'5" blond Reacher...that guy. The chap in the TV series is perfect. I hope they get to do all the books.
A telly one is John Hannah as Rebus, completely wrong. As soon as they cast Ken Stott it was so obvious that he is Rebus.
I say that version of Much Ado at the cinema. There's a shot at the beginning where they all come over the brow of a hill on horses and the women in the audience let out a collective sigh/groan.

Mrsjayy · 13/10/2023 12:39

I agree Ken Stott was rebus

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 13/10/2023 12:48

Hugh Bonneville as Lord Mountbatten in The Viceroy's House. Apart from the fact that physically the two men couldn't be more different (a fact made painfully obvious when newsreels of the REAL LM were played at the end of the film), it was basically Lord Grantham goes to India.

Tom Hiddleston as Taylor Swift’s boyfriend.

😂

OppsUpsSide · 13/10/2023 12:56

Keira Knightly as Elizabeth Bennett - she wasn’t bad, she just didn’t suit the role.

Renee Z in Bridget Jones. Should have been Kate Winslet’s part!

100%

Squiblet · 13/10/2023 08:10

No, Sally Phillips!

My choice: Jennifer Ehle in the TV version of Pride & Prejudice. She really smirked her way through the role - got it all wrong.

@Squiblet so pleased to find someone that thinks the same about Jennifer as Elizabeth

IsGoodIsDon · 13/10/2023 13:13

Anne Hathaway in One Day.

NumberFortyNorhamGardens · 13/10/2023 13:17

Never seen a Hamlet I’m convinced by. David Tennant was too histrionic for my taste and Andrew Scott was just…Moriarty.

SenecaFallsRedux · 13/10/2023 13:30

Have you seen Persuasion, with Amanda Root as Anne? It is such a sensitive adaptation, depicting the times yet with the psychological heft that engages us.

The best Austen adaptation of them all, in my opinion. Perfectly cast, even to the small parts. And Ciaran Hinds is the definitive Captain Wentworth.

@NumberFortyNorhamGardens Derek Jacobi was magnificent as Hamlet in a 1970s BBC production.

Emilia Fox - in anything. She's always exactly the same in everything and like she needs to go and do a poo. If she did not come from acting royalty there is no way she would be so successful.

Yes to this!!!!

MrMucker · 13/10/2023 10:37

James McAvoy.
He's just James McAvoy in anything, even though you can see him trying really hard to BE someone. He just lacks the ability to transport and I don't understand why he has always been so prominently cast for the box office.

Ooh strongly disagree with this one. The film..is it Split (?).. where he plays the person with split personality? That was some tremendous acting!

I agree with the PP who mentioned Ryan Reynolds. Its the same character over & over. I'd say the same for Chris Hemsworth. The "funny buff guy" character, on repeat.

You beat me to it.

Nicholas Cage in anything. Awful actor.

Alstroemeria123 · 13/10/2023 15:21

Tom Cruise as 6ft 5ins tall Jack Reacher

Sean Connery in the 1990s Avengers film

Mrsjayy · 13/10/2023 15:41

Dh reads Lee Childs Reacher books Tom cruise gives him the rage!

bluedomino · 12/10/2023 23:56

Keira Knightly in anything, gurning away but she was particularly bad in Pride and Prejudice. Why on earth did she get that role?

Absolutely agree. She was awful in that. Much better in Pirates.

Lampzade · 13/10/2023 15:47

Sofia Coppola in Godfather 3 . Absolutely painful to watch. She couldn’t even ‘die’ convincingly.

Such a terrible actor who ruins many of the films he is in with his rubbish ‘acting’

whysorude · 13/10/2023 13:43

@NumberFortyNorhamGardens Derek Jacobi was magnificent as Hamlet in a 1970s BBC production.

I saw Alan Rickman play Hamlet in a mill in Yorkshire 40 years ago and he was pretty convincing - still remember it anyhow!

JellyfishandShells · 13/10/2023 16:00

Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma. No, on every level. Though better than the more recent Anna Taylor Joy

Sunset6 · 13/10/2023 16:14

Daisy Ridley in Star Wars
