Actors in roles that weren't all that convincing

And this is not an actor/actress bashing thread, an actor can be hit and miss depending on role, dialogue and other factors. And it's ok to agree to disagree.

OP posts:

Matt Smith in House of the Dragon. So, so awful.

Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast. Bloody awful. And you just knew she was probably really snotty and 'don't come near me' to the rest of the cast.

I can't abide her in anything!

God yeah. I can't stand her voice. She's got the acting chops of a precocious lead in the school play.

AmyandPhilipfan · 13/10/2023 09:02

Has no one said Mark Wahlberg in The Happening (I think it's called)? I love a good apocalyptic thriller but he seemed to be trying to come across as funny, when it was a serious film. It was just very odd!

GellerYeller · 13/10/2023 09:03

A disclaimer for this next one: Ryan Reynolds is on my 'list'. The number one spot. He comes across as a fantastic person, and he's very easy on the eye. But he basically plays the same character in every role. I'd like to see more depth from him. Deadpool is hilarious, though.
@RhubarbFairy you’ve absolutely nailed the essence of Ryan Reynolds here. Completely agree.

MetaverseMavis · 13/10/2023 09:03

Meet Joe Black was ruined by the shocking performance of Claire Forlani (Susan). She was so out of her depth next to Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins

Never seen her in anything else to compare

Mrsjayy · 13/10/2023 09:04

I only like R R in Deadpool .

Puddycatfan · 13/10/2023 09:04

Bloody hell, I thought I was the only person in the world that thought this!

Still love him though...

EnjoythemoneyJane · 13/10/2023 09:09

This one’s not the role as such, but Diane Keaton doing all that terrible, terrible fake crying in Something’s Gotta Give - totally dry-eyed theatrical howling. So bad it ruins that movie. I really like her usually.

JFDIYOLO · 13/10/2023 09:22

Keanu appears to be an absolutely lovely bloke. But his acting ability is limited.

I agree ,total legend of a fella acting meh!

Bonnie wright as ginny in the Harry Potter films. Ginny in the books is so sparky and feisty, in the films she’s so wooden and zero chemistry between her and Radcliffe.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/10/2023 09:34

Keira knightly in anything.

QueenBitch666 · 13/10/2023 09:40

Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love. Her neck does most of the acting as I recall. Cannot believe she won a blooming Oscar for it.

That was a dreadful film

Emma Watson as Belle in Beauty and the Beast was particularly ConfusedHmm

Oh my god yes and Emily Blunt in the new version of Mary poppings and the new little mermaid actress.

UncleHerbie · 13/10/2023 09:53

Catherine Tate. Great personality when interviewed and excellent in the first series of TCTS (20 years ago), but I can “see” her acting in everything I’ve ever watched her in. Ditto Dame Julie Waters. Meryl Streep’s faux humility in interviews grinds my gears.

DressDilemma · 13/10/2023 10:00

Emma Watson as Hermione in Harry Potter.

i came on to say that what were disney thinking. cant act to save her life. apparently a nightmare on set as well

MrMucker · 13/10/2023 10:37

James McAvoy.
He's just James McAvoy in anything, even though you can see him trying really hard to BE someone. He just lacks the ability to transport and I don't understand why he has always been so prominently cast for the box office.

TammyJones · 13/10/2023 10:40

Loved the lake house.
Loved interviews with a vampire
Trying to get into the new series - some good ideas, but so far prefer-the film - Tom cruse was excellent.
Adam Sandler can be forgiven because of the excellent 51st dates.
I did love 4 weddings.
But did think at one point it would have worked better if they had swop Andie Mc with kristen Scott Thomas who played the female friend of Charlie.
Couldn't understand why he didn't fall fir her - she was stunning

Hugh Grant was brill as Jeremy Thorpe on the TV prog. Inhibited toffs is his best role.

He was very good v

Matt Smith in House of the Dragon. So, so awful.

Oh no I thought he was great
Loved him in dr who and the crown. He's just keeps getting better.
The bit when he defuses tension between the semi adult children, the looks he gave them was brilliant.
But I've not read the books so if you have - who would be a better fit?

I loved how he sense himself up in dead pool
'Do you think Ryan Reynolds succeed on his outstanding acting abilities' ?

I remember him in Shameless I can't get past it, his Sister is an actress she's been in quite a few scottish programmes.

I completely agree. Ginny in the book was passionate, fiery and quick smart. Bonnie Wright was just insipid as Ginny.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 13/10/2023 11:09

Emilia Fox - in anything. She's always exactly the same in everything and like she needs to go and do a poo. If she did not come from acting royalty there is no way she would be so successful.
