Actors in roles that weren't all that convincing

And this is not an actor/actress bashing thread, an actor can be hit and miss depending on role, dialogue and other factors. And it's ok to agree to disagree.

Was just watching one of the Harry Potter films with DS last night — (1) Michael Hambon’s hammy take on Dumbledore via Richard Harris and (2) it’s not that Helena Bonham-Carter gave anything like a bad performance, but who rewrote Bellatrix Lestrange from the brunette Unity Mitford heavy-lidded pureblood aristo type she was in the novels to a vaguely steampunk Cockney with mad hair and an idiosyncratic line in black corsets?

Owen Wilson and Jennifer Anniston in Marley and me.

Stilted, wooden acting with zero chemistry between them. Wilson looked awkward with the dog and Aniston looked half asleep.

Catsmere · 12/10/2023 23:38

Keanu Reeves as Don John in Much Ado About Nothing. He really wasn't villain material!

Catsmere · 12/10/2023 23:40

@Splitscreened - interesting, I'm in the minority who much preferred Gambon to Harris as Dumbledore.

MeinKraft · 12/10/2023 23:40

Jamie Dornan in the 50 Shades films, he always looks vaguely embarrassed to be there.

ChonkySloth · 12/10/2023 23:41

Hilary Swank in The Core

I find Adam sandler a bit meh - I watched one of his films and I vowed never again

lol! I've never watched the film even when it occasionally gets shown on freeview. A film about a couple and a dog err no thanks !

Nicholas Cage in Captain Corelli's Mandolin. It's a bad film in which everyone is bad, but he is especially bad.

You beat me to it.

Russell Crowe in Les Mis. Colin Firth in Mamma Mia.

Keanu Reeves in Dracula. Keanu Reeves in the Day the Earth Stood Still. Keanu Reeves in the Lake House.

Basically, Keanu Reeves in any roll that requires greater range than 'confused' or 'stoic'.

bluedomino · 12/10/2023 23:56

Keira Knightly in anything, gurning away but she was particularly bad in Pride and Prejudice. Why on earth did she get that role?

groovergirl · 13/10/2023 00:00

Carrie in Four Weddings and a Funeral. And that was not Andie McDowell's fault. She is pretty solid, and was excellent in Maid (as the maid's useless mother) and Crush. It's because Carrie is a badly written character. Richard Curtis should have run Carrie across his female friends for a frank and fearless appraisal. They would have said "No way! She is utterly awful, and clearly a gold- digger with a dodgy past and flimsy cover story. Don't let her anywhere near Charles and his friends, who are the real stars."

tigerbear · 13/10/2023 00:00

Renee Z in Bridget Jones. Should have been Kate Winslet’s part!

Never thought of that but you are so right about Kate Winslet.

Myfluffyblanket · 13/10/2023 00:11

Eddie Izzard in anything ... and everything from his role as leader of The Furries in Mystery Men to running around after Aryan teen girls on the beach in his English tweed three-piece suit and little brown Brogues .
I always think 'oh look , there's Eddie Izzard trying to do acting' .
He's such a disappointment .

minipie · 13/10/2023 00:11

Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love. Her neck does most of the acting as I recall. Cannot believe she won a blooming Oscar for it.

Blanketsburg · 13/10/2023 00:12

Kevin Costner in Robin Hood. But I think he's amazing in Yellowstone.

Brad Pitt can be brilliant or absolutely awful depending on the role.

I haven't seen the films, but I have seen the trailers, and yes, I thought he looked a bit sheepish!

Blahbie · 13/10/2023 00:14

I like the rock but he usually plays very one dimensional characters, maybe he is type cast idk 🤷‍♀️

Oh Daniel Radcliffe, obviously. Three facial expressions on rotation.

PaminaMozart · 13/10/2023 00:17

Katherine Parkinson and whoever in the national theatre's Much Ado last year.

Almost as bad- 😱 - as the Old Vic's production with Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones a few years ago...

In pain
Attempting a wry smile but is too weighed down by weighty thoughts
Confused about some sort of paranormal activity potentially affecting his mind

I can never disassociate Owen Wilson’s characters from actual Owen Wilson.
Brad Pitt in Friends. I know that episode is beloved but he veers from hammy to wooden.
Adam Sandler gets a bit of stick but I like him. He’s consistent and no nonsense. The Gary Neville of movies, if you will.
