Is the heating on yet?

Just that. I have never left it off so long before, but we have had a renovation and it is all heavily insulated. I don't know if it is us or if it is just warm.

Have you put yours on?

I'm surprised at the number of posters who don't seem to have thermostats in their houses and have to switch the heating on and off.

Or maybe they are just stupid like my husband who wants to turn the heating off at the boiler even though we have a thermostat which he refuses to learn how to use. Sigh.

PinkyDinkyDoodle · 13/10/2023 15:21

I've been out in a t-shirt today. Probably for the last time this year, if the forecast here is anything to go by. It's going to be near freezing tomorrow.

I've got all the winter jumpers and thermals out, and have changed the bedding so we all have thicker (or extra) duvets. The electric throws are washed and ready. The log pile has been refilled, and the slow cooker is ready to go.

Our house is old and poorly insulated, and costs a fortune to heat.

I agree. Usually posters who start threads like this live in or near London which is usually considerable warmer than the rest of the UK.

It's currently 12 degrees and raining in South Yorkshire, and I have been back in socks for weeks.

This is the kind of weather that justifies some heating IMO.

I have a thermostat but I have electric heating and it has 2 different settings, one for summer which is more economical and one for winter.

User1748953 · 13/10/2023 18:50

My thermostat is set at 7 (frost setting) until we need it on a bit more, I shall adjust it to 18-20 when we get back from holiday next weekend, we go away a lot in the summer and autumn and I don't want to forget and leave the thermostat so it comes on when we are away at something like 17 degrees so I manually adjust it as needed. I shall put it on a few hours before we come home so it's not too bad when we get in.

DragonflyLady · 13/10/2023 19:15

I’m electric heating also, so no thermostat. New heaters too this year, so will have to learn how to use them!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 13/10/2023 19:25

TakeMe2Insanity · 13/10/2023 11:02

Same here.

It’s damp and windy but not actually cold.

Changed my mind about the heater when the sun came out this afternoon - I was able to open the windows a bit. (Not too far, flippin' wind).

Parakeetamol · 13/10/2023 19:28

We still have windows and back door open during the day and windows at night. I doubt we will start setting the heating to come on until late Nov.

Goldmember · 13/10/2023 19:33

Ours has been on since the last week of Sept, it clicks on at 18c and has not been on much.

prettybird · 13/10/2023 19:51

It's 15.5C in our living room Shock so we've just switched the central heating on (on timer). We've turned off the radiator in the dining room as we're not using the room until Sunday.

Dh is about to go for a bath so it has the added benefit of warming the towels in the bathroom Grin

We did turn the heating on briefly on Sunday as we had ds and his girlfriend over for dinner, for the first time since they'd moved out into their own place, so we wanted the room to be comfortable.

We're in Glasgow - like @ssd

We've just had double glazing put in in the bay window of the living room, as well as the bathroom and kitchen (cost a fortune as had to be wooden sash windows Hmm) so hoping that we'll see a difference in our bills at the very least the bay should be less drafty Wink

Next year we're hoping to do the bedroom, study and dining room - and possibly the dormer upstairs.

Year after that will be the massive double height window in the stairwell. That loses sooo much heat Shock

WhatACluster · 13/10/2023 20:18

Nopes…all electric here and it’s just not been cold enough plus I can’t justify the £10/15 a day for the night storage heaters

Electric blankets are on the beds and I have dug out my heated throw and had the chimney swept.

It will be jumpers blankets and socks and a real cold snap before we start using the electric heating in the house!

NoEffingWay · 13/10/2023 21:13

The boilers been turned off since about april! Got the oil filled radiator out tonight to take the chill off in the lounge as it's distinctly cooler than it was last night. I think next week I might consider actually heating the whole house hoping to get to November without it Grin

Excitingnewusername · 13/10/2023 22:58

No thermostat here, heating has been on on a few eveninga, for a few hours mainly to take the damp feeling off the house.

My washing didn't dry properly after 2 days with the dehumidifier running this week, so I had to get the electric heated airer out to give it an extra boost. I have to admit that made the kitchen feel so wame and cosy compared to the rest of the house that it made the heating more tempting.

DH pi the heating on early evening today (we both have covid so could be tiredness related) and the house now has gone from a little too wamr to feeling noticeably chilly after it has been off for nearly 2 hours.

Tulipvase · 13/10/2023 23:11

No heating on but have lit the log burner a couple of times.

Desecratedcoconut · 13/10/2023 23:12

Yes. A good few times this week.

Sprogonthetyne · 13/10/2023 23:20

Not yet, but it is getting a bit chilly. It usually goes on at the start of half term, but our holidays are later this year, so not sure if we'll make it until then.

XenoBitch · 14/10/2023 01:00

No. Is chilly, but I like to be cold. Thermostat says 16,but I still have windows open.

smilesup · 14/10/2023 01:05

Northwest and not yet. Has gone below 17 in the house. I have used my electric blanket though as cold sitting still for work.

unlikelychump · 14/10/2023 06:41

RampantIvy · 13/10/2023 08:10

Ours comes on when the temperature dips below the setting we have on the thermostat. ie when it is cold enough and not by some arbitrary calendar date.

So, yes, it has come on a couple of times in the morning. The forecast for Monday night is -1, so no doubt it will come on the next morning.

I never understand this, because we have windows open a lot. The temperature therefore drops with the windows open; l wouldn't want the heating to click on just to heat the outside.

Your OP answers the question really. It's been very warm and you've insulated your house. Of course your heating hasn't come on.

We're in the NE of England, have a 1920s semi with roof insulation and a well insulated extension at the back. Very old double glazing at the front and side and no cavity wall insulation. Our thermostat controlled heating came on strongly for the first time yesterday morning. It was frosty outside so not surprising.

Edited

Yes, I know why we haven't put ours on. But I am wondering if it is a big benefit of our renovations or whether everyone is the same. Hence the thread.

I don't heat the outside either. When I air the bedroom and bathroom I open the window and shut the door. The thermostat is in the living room, and if it is cold enough to require heating then it will come on. In this case the downstairs windows wouldn't be open anyway. We only open them if it is warm outside.

AsBeautifulAsYou · 14/10/2023 08:59

Midlands here, 19 in the house an no heating on. Windows open all year unless it gets to minus figures. Thermostat is set to 18.

We often open ours just for some fresh air (that may be cold) or when cooking, including downstairs where the thermostat is. Once the heating is turned on for the winter we need to change our behaviour.

Ssme92 · 14/10/2023 19:11

Two fires lit tonight ❄️🔥

Beezknees · 14/10/2023 20:46

Not on yet, but I've not opened the windows today 😂 got on pyjamas, socks and dressing gown and I'm a comfortable temperature. Probably won't need to put it on for another week or 2. Bonus of living in a top floor flat is that it stays very warm, not so much fun in the summer though when it's roasting.

terraced · 14/10/2023 20:48

No. We've had a frost and we're currently renovating so the house feels cold at times but we've a log burner and that's doing the job for now.
